Now there is a very simple solution tbg. I hadn't considered that at all...doh. Fact is I could fairly easily measure the Diameter of the Twin Gears and then replace them with (even) Brass ones I suppose? These things seem available?

The thing, if it ever runs, won't wear out the Plastic wheel drive Gear, as it will only run once in a Blue Moon!

I shall check this possibility ASAP BUT it is bloomin' cold up The Junction at the moment.

    Phil

Yes Jack Frost had visited the workshop🥶. I seem to recall, when I was looking for replacements of split gears (spares shortage), that the 4MT had the same gears as the Bulleid's - which were prone to failure.

looked through my scrap loco pile and found the retainers (no gears alas).

Just acquired a DCC fitted version of this loco. Very good condition BUT the gears are horrible; I've checked them. Loose and not meshing with the Motor Worm correctly and the thing leaps about like a jumping jack and hardly runs at all. Most disappointing but not impossible to sort I am sure. I've tried adjusting the Motor position (almost impossible), but the gears are just flopping around in their space despite being firmly attached to their 'axles'

However I'm just asking of anyone else had such an issue with a R2716X 75070? Even if it is a bit different to my description.

Probably why I managed to get it for around £40 at Auction; yes I know!

    Thanks

sounds like the gears have been replaced - with the incorrect ones. sadly I've not got one.

My understanding from watching an Airfix video is that it's now just the 1/24 Spitfire which is being made in the UK. They're really doing this as a novelty as it's such a British plane.

The Quick Build range is like the rest of the range, now made in India. That range was originally made in the UK  as it had smaller production runs but cost increases and sufficient sales volumes made it worthwhile moving to India too. Hornby said that the cost savings are not in moulding but in packing the boxes which is quite labour-intensive.

The armour range are produce by Academy in  South-Korea.

The Spitfire is being produced in limited numbers, so I suspect if you pre-order now, you'll get it in early 2023.

Correct, but if I'm not mistaken, the the P40 was made by a third company.

Also, the Humbrol range is (partly?) made in UK.

I haven't bought an Airfix kit in years, aren't they (mostly) made in India now?

According to scalemates the P-40 is all Airfix's own work. They used an injection moulding manufacturer - however they didn't use them during Covid.

It's look on the box, as Airfix state where they are manufactured. Though Airfix have changed the plastic, if the Anson and Sabre are anything to go by.

  5. Just to point out that Airfix announced that the Spitfire was being produced in a the UK, quite a while ago in their regular 'Workbench' updates, now the press have got hold of it.

It's worth noting to for stash hunters that If the Airfix kit has the Union Flag on the  box - it's  made in the UK, from memory the 1/72nd scale  Avro Shackleton AEW, Handley Page Victor K2 and the 1.48th scale Curtis P-40 and the Quick build kits are (I think).

Bizarrely they stopped producing kits in the Uk, because People complained about the Plastic being too hard & brittle lol

Probably some weird performance based art, for which the grant was signed off because the approvals board didn't want to be accused of being "uneducated" and "ignorant".

Rather like The King's new clothes...

Or the Grand Inquisitors new robes - sadly they were too small, as he was ranting about TT-120, the tailor misheard him...

Hmm.  Any ideas what I might have fouled up here please, chaps and chapesses?

Fox transfers, soaked in warm water for a couple of minutes then applied onto a coat of gloss varnish.  All as per the included guidance.  But that carrier film looks hideous.  I'm hoping that a coat of matt varnish tomorrow will hide it.  If not, off they will come, and I will have to resort to Plan B.  Hopefully that won't be required, as I don't yet have a Plan B...

No wonder the newly installed driver is looking a tad downcast.

Not  an unusual thing to happen to any decals, it's usually down to the gloss clear coat not being dry enough and it reacts to the carrier film - hence silvering, it will usually settle down with a few coats of Micro sol (it luckily did for you) or X-20A thinners at a push. Using Micro set can cause issues with decal  break up.
