  1. Perhaps it is the angle of the photograph but that looks like an overly large gap between the bottom of the axle box and the tie between the two arms of the W-iron?   The axle box tiebar in turn looks low, not that far above rail level?  (Apologies if I have some of the terminology wrong).


    I looked back through the thread at your pictures of your iron ore tipplers, where these points didn’t seem to be issues, and also had a quick look at what I think is the prototype being modelled on Paul Bartletts website:

  2. Finescale P4/S4 exhibition model railway layout "CHISLEDON" for sale at auction next week. 

    Not really sure where the best place to post this was on RMweb but thought here might be most the likely for this to be seen by those who might be interested, or know someone who might be!

    I've no personal interest in this; just thought it looked like it might be something that would appeal to someone.

    Bachmann should have released one of these beasties! The GW Mink A converted into Pallet vans by BR. If the BR version on a 10 foot chassis were unstable then these vans on a 9 foot wheelbase  must have run like a pig on roller-skates!

     They appear to have congregated with the later BR Palvans at Kirkcudbright station loaded with munitions for the nearby military ranges at Dundrennan. The mind fairly boggles at the thought of all these pallet vans loaded with tank shells oscillating between Kineton CAD in Warwickshire and the south of Scotland!

    Prototype photo from my copy of Dave Larkin’s excellent book of ‘Pre-nationalisation freight wagons on BR’, which I hope he won’t mind me reproducing here.

    I built one from a chopped up Keyser/K’s GWR Meat van kit some while ago but never painted it.

    I have an interest in these vans although pictures of them are pretty scarce!  
     

    Have you a source for the information about what they carried, as I’m pretty sure I’ve never read that before?

    It’s only £3 if you are a visitor to the Science Centre.  Otherwise it’s £8.50 for up to 9 hours.  Full details for others here: https://www.glasgowsciencecentre.org/visit/parking  Although not sure I should increase awareness of it; I might end up not being able to get a space!

Rolt in railway adventure and the maroon coach clearly visible in "railway with a heart of gold"). I suspect that the maroon coach was painted around 1946 as a last ditch attempt at attracting tourist traffic after the mine closed (in the 1930s photographs, the carriages appear to be homogeneous in livery) but other than than, I can't imagine that the railway, "running on a shoestring budget" would have spent the money on fully repainting all of the coaches during Sir Haydn's ownership.

     

    Edit: flicking through "the talyllyn railway, past and present" by Mitchell and Eyres, there is a photograph from 1948 with the coaches again appearing to all be in the same livery. An open door on one of the coaches shows that lining was present, but it appears to be simpler than the lining seen in preservation, with round corners and only a single colour. The open door also has a number 1 on it, one assumes this is to designate first class

    early preservation?

    A very long time ago I seem to recall using cork tile adhesive to stick cork to baseboards.  Memory says it was a sort of rubbery adhesive.  If so that perhaps helps with sound deadening?

     

     I see that such adhesives are still available.

    I do a fair bit of cycling, not sure if you have ever come across a guy called Graham Obree.  He was a track cyclist at the same time as Chris Boardman but very much the establishment anti-hero - no Lotus carbon bikes, more something he'd made himself using parts from his wife's washing machine.  Towards the end of his career he couldn't really cope with loss of competitiveness and suffered from mental health issues and depression, actually trying to take his life on a couple of occasions.  He gave a talk in Dumfries and was asked why, when he had achieved everything he had in his career, he couldn't just sit back and enjoy it.  His response was that he'd had that attitude he would have never achieved what he had in the first place and that his advice to us was that 'happiness has nothing to do with the situation you find yourself in, simply where it sits versus your expectations'.  For sure I'm trying to set my expectations at an appropriate level given my experience!

    Is there an “if” missing near the start of the penultimate sentence?  Should it start “His response was that if he’d had …..”?

    Seems to be £179.95 for all versions today, except weathered.  So maybe wasn’t much of a bargain yesterday?

    Well I did make it today, despite my van refusing to start this morning.  80 mile trip each way but well worth it.  Nice variety of layouts, most being in the inspiring  ‘I can make something like that’.  Friendly and welcoming, spent far too much, mainly stocking up with glue, paint and tools from Squires.  Had a pleasant chat with the operators on a couple of micro layouts.  The layout I liked the best was the one based on the Barton-on-Humber branch.  Scary m0ment when a chap on the public side picked up one of the locos, I thought he was one of the operators but he was a visitor, very well sorted by the operator.

    Where's the exclamation mark response for the last bit!

    Aren't Gibson OO and EM wheels the same though, just with alternative axle lengths?  If so I would hope that a conversion to EM wouldn't need new wheels, just longer axles. 

    Perhaps complicated by the wheel/axle interface - I think some wheels might now come on stub axles?

    It seems to be wooden too - which might explain the dodgy-looking joint at the front of the bay window... though the windows themselves look good. There's a signal box too and, I think, a platform shelter.

    The show was very well-attended, and I managed to sell quite a number of the GWR/PO rolling stock items I mentioned in an earlier post. Most of these were built in EM (which means they're much more difficult to sell). No matter, I just re-gauged them to OO (heresy to some, I know), and then they fairly flew! 

     

    The stumbling block to many sales was the fact that the items of rolling stock had either screw-link, three-link or Sprat & Winkle couplings. Those built from kits had them at source, of course, but those items which were modified RTR had had the tension-lock mounts lopped off (good; very good as far as I'm concerned!). This caused great dismay among many potential customers (even though I was selling most of the wagons at only a fiver each), resulting in their turning away. I said it would be easy to fix tension-locks (I even had some for sale), but no. No good! Is the level of skill so poor with some 'modellers' that the fixing-on of something as simple as (ghastly) tension-locks is beyond them?  

     

    I'll be going through the rest of the (mainly GWR EM) items in the next few days, both locos and stock, assessing them and offering them for sale on here - proceeds to a good cause and also CRUK. Please, watch this space.

    If you know a member of the EM Gauge Society and they are attending the ExpoEM Summer 2023 at Wakefield this coming weekend perhaps they could take the EM gauge items you have and offer them for sale via the members sale facility?  They might potentially find appreciative buyers there.  If not then at least you have tried, and perhaps saved your time changing wheelsets etc.  Just a thought!

    Sorry, yes missed out the important tender word!  
     

    I appreciate that there is the water scoop and brake gear behind the frames but it all looks rather “solid”, appreciating it is in shadow.  I wondered if it was a sort of continuation of the electrical connection with the locomotive, as that is at that sort of underfloor level.  Anyway, just idle thoughts!
