  1. Rails' pricing can be very hit and miss. I've bought locos for £39 that would normally go for at least double that. One this evening I looked at was £109.50, minus the 15% brings it down to £93. The equivalent new is over £200, and it's not that much improved compared to the secondhand one Rails were offering.

Some of their job lot stuff is keenly priced too, but you get an equal amount which is just a box of tat!

    A bargain at £56, apparently.

I used to read their secondhand pages, yes there was the odd bargain, but not anything that I actually wanted.

It does provide a bit of amusement for a boring train journey though.

It kept me entertained for a few minutes earlier as well. I mean, £56 for a badly painted, partly dismantled, Hornby Dublo A4 (without tender), but at least the box is fair condition! You can get a decent model on eBay for £70.

  3. £20 for a load of whitemetal N gauge loco kits. Just the one  very bright photo on the listing that appeared to show a couple of 3D prints there as well. Turns out they were Asto-Cad C12 and K3 plus tender prints, about £50 plus postage and fees to buy from Shapeways. One of the whitemetal kits appears to parts of Graham Hughes J11. No tender but not too difficult to make one or just buy one from Shapeways. The rest of parts are Langley/PD Marsh kits - A3, B1, J94, L3.

All in all, two complete bodies, two partly complete one, and a few other bits that can be melted down and used as ballast weights for the 3D prints!

NYMR are using 47077 now alongside the two 37s and 31128.

Steam is still running in the form of 825, 63395 and 92134.

After a lineside fire near Sleights yesterday morning and the forecast 30 degree temperatures for the next few days, I wouldn't be surprised if the NYMR goes back to full diesel operation until Monday.

At least KESR, GWSR, Epping and Ongar, Nene Valley, Watercress and SVR now all-diesel services until after the weekend, though the last three have steam operating within station limits. A bit of rain forecast in the southeast on Monday and Tuesday, though it remains to be seen how much.

  5. There's been a lot of disruption the last couple of weeks after the derailment at Garmisch-Partenkirchen a two months ago. It would appear the sleepers have been identified as being defective and there's been a nationwide inspection of similar ones.

    https://www.railjournal.com/infrastructure/sleeper-inspections-lead-to-temporary-line-closures-in-germany/

Lots of lines closed, delays due to infrastructure up from 1.8% to 11.7% in June. Coupled with all the extra €9 passengers it's not a good time to be travelling over there.

There's some great footage of the iron ore festival on this channel. The 0-10-0 and the tri-unit electric loco are very impressive!

On 24th September, Krylbo are having a steam-up day when the B Class will be in action. Sadly I will be back in the UK then :(

I had a ride behind the Dm3 in 2015. The Swedes weren't interested in haulage or chasing different locos, just there for a day out. Even so, it was amusing being in the front coach and every single voice was English!

  7. Keep them coming please Corbs. I've only had the pleasure of visiting the country once, back in 2015 when the Swiss Krokodil visited as part of their 100th anniversary of electric traction. A lot of fun, and Gävle was a very impressive set up.

I looked at going for the Kiruna iron ore festival earlier this month, but quickly gave up on that idea once I realised just how far north it is. Plus the missus would've killed me!

A lovely country, I just wish I'd had been able to go for more than 3 nights. And I enjoyed the fact that in the supermarket in Stockholm Central station, bottles of beer were cheaper than bottles of Coke!

Was human waste ever carried by rail.

If so, it could be tail traffic in the consist. :)

Technically, it is now - controlled emission toilets emptying into a tank underneath the train!

Ouch, Gutting to see, hopefully repaired quickly and not too expensive.

Hopefully a bit of heat and a big hammer will sort out the rods, the worry is what's caused it and has it damaged the cylinders, journals, wheels etc.

  10. This was posted on the Bluebell Railway's Facebook page, but I don't know who the original photographer was. I was on the service when it failed, but didn't notice anything untoward until we arrived at Horsted Keynes and stopped with the rear of the last coach only just in the platform. Looking between the frames you could see one connecting rod was bent, but the other one wasn't really visible.

Agreed. I was rather disappointed when 34051 Winston Churchill was repainted a few years ago - I believe it hadn't seen a paint-brush since it was withdrawn in the '60s. Whilst I understand the reasoning behind the new coat of paint it did take away it's "as preserved" character.

    Steven B.

34051 was repainted at Derby in 1979, and not very well by all accounts.

  12. I've just cleared cookies again for the first time in a couple of weeks, then went into Layout Topics without logging in. Obviously that works fine, so I thought I'd log in again, and rather than it coming up with http code 500 error like before, it went straight back in. I can now access all the sections that were previously causing problems too. Very weird! Good to have full access to the forum though after a couple of months.

£11 including postage, or you can buy the same brand new from N Brass Locos for half that price (£1.60 x 2 plus postage).

I've never had the pleasure of looking through their listings before. I remember seeing boxes of junk at swapmeets labelled "any item £1". I never thought for one minute that 25 years later the stuff would be on eBay for fifty quid!

I like to think this looks like a genuine mistake looking at the other listings by the seller though. These are the almost valueless Del Prado static models.

I bought a box of Del Prado tat the other day for £15. One of the models was a 1960s Italian Tibidabo E626 Bo-Bo-Bo electric loco. Pretty rare, and I managed to sell it a week later for €110!

Can't get it to scroll back, is it just me or is it not working for others.
It was a useful feature, saved looking at empty platforms.

No, it's not just you, they changed it a few months ago. I assume as part of the fallout from the class 20 accident at Grosmont.

High fire risk, so the NYMR is trying to run a peak summer season service between Whitby and Pickering with two Class 37s.

Three trains each way per day, pre-book only. Do you really have to pay for the whole Whitby - Pickering trip if you only want to go from Grosmont to Goathland?

Not looking forward to my trip to North Yorks in two weeks quite so much now. Let's hope it rains.

You can book tickets on the day, and there's at least one full line trip (Grosmont - Pickering) available for ticket holders without needing to book to go to Whitby as well. It's not particularly clear from the website though that you can do short journeys.

    Hi John,

wish you all the best for the show!

I will be out and about tomorrow as well, the layout is packed up in the garage, ready to go into the van. I read you got a lot of good advice from the forum community. One point, mentioned before more than once, I would like to mention again. Take yourself enough time to level your boards as good as possible. Even a nice floor in an exhibition hall doesn't mean it is level, and rolling stock tends to run to one end...

If your layout has any tunnels don't forget a good torch, the derailments or contact problems happen normally there where you have no access flap. How do I know? Donnersbachkogel has 4 tunnels...

We took our club layout to a show a few years ago and spent about an hour trying to get whole thing level. Wind down the feet, check it's level, move on to the next board, first one has one of the feet in the air. Turned out the gym had a sprung floor! We eventually managed to get it basically level, though you'd occasionally see a wagon randomly move if too many people were at one end.

I think everyone else has covered pretty much everything you need. As has been mentioned, if you can't get an extra operator in the future just speak to the exhibition manager beforehand and ask if someone will cover for you while you have some lunch.

What's the wisp of steam from the top of the tender?  I thought there were just vacuum tanks up there.

It's the air pump. Most other locos have them either hidden between the frames or next to the smokebox (70000, 5029, 34067). But Clan Line was the first to be fitted with air brakes and they decided on the back of the tender was the best place to fit the pump. I believe that it's frowned upon now as it requires a high pressure steam supply between the loco and tender, hence why all other locos have the pump on the loco itself.

With you on that. Tenner is over the top pricing. Also it looks like damaged rather than necessarily poor craftsmanship?

I'm not so sure. Lots of glue marks, incorrect and missing windows, and it looks like it's been chiselled off a layout.
