Probably OK. although O gauge locos usually draw a bit more current thant OO.

A don't know how much the Dapol 121 draws, but I'd be surpised if its more than 1A, especially since they don't usually have to haul anything else.

There have been a lot of controllers over the years.  Controller should have stamped on a rating plate or moulded into the plastic either a maximum current or power consumption.

If that is at least 1 Amp (=12 VA or 12 Watts at 12v) it should cope

They draw about 0.65 so should be fine, I use a 1amp controller and have removed the second motor on my larger diesels to keep the current draw below 1amp

More done today. It always seems to take up time but never actually gets any closer to being finished this project!😄

Various bits & bobs done on/for the chassis. Then between waiting for glue to go off etc etc I decided to swap the interior over to right hand drive. Not particularly difficult with this interior as it’s more or less symmetrical.

Made up some air hoses from some old nut/bolt locking wire wrapped around a screwdriver. Once they’ve glued solid I’ll manipulate them as needed to line up with the trailer.

I’ve painted the cab now too.

Here it is loosely assembled back on the chassis.

Ignore the yellow bit! I know it looks like Noddy’s car like this but the chassis will be in black soon.

Im torn though. Do I leave it in block red or add a white (or other colour?) stripe or something.

Obviously the chassis will be black with bits picked out as needed, bumper is black and grill black, which should relieve the amount of red.
I think sometimes though you risk overdoing it with commercial vehicles. Not many of them were painted like cars with metallic paint, stripes, 2 tones etc. Most were treated as a tool and got a coat of paint in a solid colour, more often than not white, red, blue etc and that was that. Maybe that’s the way to go with this?

I would be tempted to add a white strip around the cab above the grille level just to break it up. In the 1970s it was more common than you think to have multi colour cabs as they had a longer working life (especially a heavy haulage truck) so worth considering

  3. I managed to leave the layout up overnight as we were all at an 18th Birthday party last night hence no need for the TV which was behind the layout.

First bit of progress was on the cement silo. The silo is a tight fit and is in two parts with the body being separate from the lower section to enable the top to be slid in place. This is not really ideal as things like pipes and the ladder stretch the full height of the silo. I have decided to bite the bullet and glue the 2 sections together as it can be installed by unscrewing the top of the layout.  It will rarely need to be removed and is a 5 minute job to take the top off. I test fitted the ladder and the access platform for the silo20240428_082430.jpg.920723a938dca74b78cbaf8fd996db8c.jpg

I then made a frame for the platform which was then glued in place and the ladder threaded through to test the fit. I need to make some securing brackets for the ladder where it meets the silo side

    20240428_112932.jpg.59dfb9db459b3b769301c82a92409cc2.jpg

Before I glue the 2 parts together I have separated them and given them a coat of paint.

The placement of the road vehicles has been worked out, a blue sherpa van will go near the Leyland National and in a nod to both Peafore Yard and Pallet Lane, the BR crew van will go in the cement siding yard.

I have also cracked on with the platform surface as I want to get the platform in place to finish the ballast.

  4. Rubbish weather today so blasted out all the jobs on the list I had to do early doors so I could set the extension up.

Firstly I laid the buildings out now the canopy is in place on the warehouse to see how it looked. It appears to have slightly warped but looks easily corrected, the pillars are just loosely in place at the moment

As I can work on buildings off the layout I decided to concentrate on jobs that needed the layout up. First bit was the road and pavement on the left of the layout so I can get on with the bank.

The road slopes towards the front of the layout and also has the entrance to the cement yard. To cover the ply I cut a layer of thin card to the correct shape then added thicker card for the base of the pavement.

    20240427_133736.jpg.a1022dd7b6e842283a409897a3409b9a.jpg

A fence will separate the pavement from the bank  with grass and weeds taking over the area behind the buffer stop.

I also progressed the ballast, the beauty of such a small layout is this is only a few hours work from start to finish

Just for reference 37108 is on its way from the Crewe Heritage Centre to another location (which i have forgotten) so its kind of just a convenient stopping off point and so relatively cheap.

Ive got tickets for Sunday as i have a prior booking on Saturday. As someone who does RC aircraft and has dabbled in kits im looking forward to it as it is amazing how many useful products from the war gaming/plastic kit market have never made it to the model railway world. I don't expect too many bargains left on the Sunday so my wallet should be safe.

It is off to Ruddington on the GCR(N) according to the video interview with the owner

Wow, they really are desperate to have him... I can't see Toto and Helmut seeing eye to eye, if it happens then I imagine the contract will have some way to keep Max but pension Helmut off quite quickly

What is the pre-occupation with shows at the NEC needing a centre piece - what purpose does it serve?

You can't buy it, you can't watch it run and it must cost one of the sponsors a fair wad to transport it there and back.

That could be prime selling space, another model or a cost reduction somewhere to make the show cheaper to operate.

I know it was a Warley thing, but I sometimes wondered when things are tight, why?

No idea I am afraid, I guess a bit of headline marketing. Nice to see 37108 smartened up, it has been a coat of many colours for years and it looks to have had a load of missing bits put back on it. Also it looks like it is on the move from Crewe to the Great Central Railway so imagine was a way to spread the cost

I bought an EFE 4mm scale model of a Bristol RE, liveried in the green and cream that Bristol Omnibus used for one-man-operation (OMO) buses in the 1970s.  Excellent though the model is, it is the single door version, which was used on the country services, going to destinations outside city boundary.  What I really want is a model of the dual door version, which was used on the city services.  Something like the David Christie photo shown below.

Does anybody know of detailing parts to add the second door?  Google isn't helping me here.

Also interesting from the photo is the little vertical window in the roofline, above the first door pillar.  This was for the Plessey laser which scanned bar codes attached to lamp posts, spaced along the route.  All part of a (failed) tracking system, together with the two way radios which were installed at the time.  ("Driver to control, driver to control, come in please...")

As @Camperdown suggests MH do the kits, they also do/did one for the dual door Bristol VRT that Bristol/Oxford/Southdown had albeit you are on your own re moving the staircase. Have a look for "Jeff Day" on Flickr, he has doen a few Bristol Bus model conversions. Having recently model a BOC Leyland National (albeit in 1:43) I look forward to seeing your results!

47559 Sir Joshua Reynolds had domino headcodes in 1984: http://www.class47.co.uk/c47_zoom_v3.php?img=0999000575000

There's a picture it newly painted at Crewe Works with the headcode panel plated over in May 1985.

Wikipedia has a picture of 47523 with dominoes as late as 1988.

47464 had dominoes in in 1986, but by then it was in large logo livery. There's a picture of it in rail blue in 1983 here: https://www.pressreader.com/uk/traction/20210401/281573768482810

They're the only 47/4s I've found from a quick search, but several 47/0s still had dominoes at this time.

Looking at 47464, it lost the Dominoes pre large loco livery, when in large logo the plated headcode panel was painted black.

Looking like my house move might be happening soon judging by the phone call this afternoon so I’m not sure how much more I’ll be getting done with these for a while. With any luck I’ll be able to get myself a proper place to do modelling again though.

    Heres a few more started.

Transit mk2. These were everywhere when I was a kid and are the van in my opinion! They look like a van should and I always liked them, then as an adult I got to own my own one for several years.

This is an IXO base model, but from a magazine partwork about rally support vehicles. As a result the decoration isn’t quite as good as the IXO branded premium versions (which I have a few of too!).

    IMG_4274.jpeg.be453e77db09c4fb0f5bff6b3156fa4b.jpeg

Of course this particular model is of a left hand drive van, which means the side door is on the far less common side for a British right hand drive van…

So I measured out the original door and transferred the measurement over to the other side then used a razor saw to cut a new door gap in. Then made new hinges & handle from scrap plastic card.
Then the original doors hinges & handle were filed off and the door outline filled and rubbed down.

    IMG_4306.jpeg.1a0423d40719ff78b7cfe6b101a90184.jpeg

I wanted a typical Transit van you’d see on the road just doing van things so I’ve gone for bog standard plain white on this one (creative aren’t I!?)

First coat on. It’ll need a few more to cover properly but it’s looking ok already.
This particular model is the tailgate type rear door but they are available with the double doors too.

    IMG_4314.jpeg.04ff63b25f97c16ea0c95c2c729391a4.jpeg

In between doing bits on the Transit I started stripping down a truck for another project…

I picked up a pair of these a while back. One will stay as it is, the other will become something else.
RABA trucks are Hungarian built but weren’t sold in the UK (that I know of??) but they used other companies cabs for a long time starting off with DAF then moving on to MAN cabs, which we did get here like this one from the late 70’s on.

Of course it’ll need the badge alternating on the grill but these were quite common in the UK.

    IMG_3634.jpeg.e8c6f6ae349b9f60fd8530b36b7d4e6c.jpeg

    Stripped.

    IMG_4316.jpeg.06e662cf2c60f49ab92496aa162b2e80.jpeg

    IMG_4315.jpeg.4d0ab93d7bd5731e77b6b1e7718213e7.jpeg

The model came apart really well. Nothing broke or caused any trouble coming off.
The cab is absolutely superb! Really looks like the prototype. Just needs a couple of holes filling in the roof from the redundant light bar but otherwise it’s good to go.
Chassis is also excellent, although I think it might need shortening slightly as I think I’m going to do this as a tractor unit. I’ve got a plan in my head to pair it with a low loader trailer so I think leaving it as a 6x4 tractor unit will fit well. I’ve also got a plan for a suitable load for the trailer which might raise a few eyebrows but I can assure you it most definitely was ‘a thing’! But you might have to wait for that until I can find the donor model… because I packed it away somewhere ready to move house!

RABA definitely weren't sold in the UK but as you say the MAN version were common, Gateway supermarkets had quite a few for example. Equally the cab was used by Saviem/Renault which were less common in the UK but at least one is preserved.

Look forward to seeing the finished model, I am Intrigued by what you have planned for the load.. It has given me an idea for a model of a Lorry from a certain famous haulier from Burnham on Sea with yellow and blue lorries who had a lot of work starting in the Barry Island area..

  11. I can't believe it is 4 months since I have posted on this thread... A combination of other projects (1:43 Seddon Atkinson lorry and the display board for the class 60) coupled with the overhaul of the main bathroom and loads of decorating plus more time away from home with work has meant progress has been limited.  That said I have overcome some "Modellers block" I had re what to do with the canopy for the warehouse on the extension.

The challenge I was facing was the depth of the platform which is c 10cm from the face to the warehouse.  I bought an LCUT canopy kit when I built the warehouse but it was too short and not deep enough to cover the width of the platform so I put in the spares box. Dave came over last week and we discussed what I could do and settled on making something from scratch but before I did I showed Dave the LCUT bits. We both agreed that the bits could actually be incorporated but I would need to buy some extra valances for the deeper and longer canopy. As the canopy is quite deep it would need a few columns for support but again LCUT do some 3d printed ones the right size.

Here is the canopy temporarily secured on the front of the warehouse

    20240407_112417.jpg.0a5a3f5ddac263b79976251277180dad.jpg

I also used the ornate support brackets included in the canopy kit as well

    20240407_112420.jpg.2ff74c7c9e95f71a1cae6bc2ea1eef33.jpg

The columns are handily the exact right size (The wonky fascia will be fixed!)

    Come out well I think.
I’ve been messing around on the computer trying to make up some suitable ‘Southern Electricity’ logo’s for these vans too. Got it about good enough now, but I don’t want to print a few onto transfer paper and end up wasting a whole sheet! I could do with some other stuff to fill the sheet a bit more.
I haven’t got a clue really when it comes to computers though so it’s a good job the SEB logo was so simple!

Just to my earlier note, I can highly recommend @Steadfast who was brilliant at helping with the custom artwork / transfers for my projects, the SA Strato was quite a complex one to do and the transfers were spot on.

  13. Wow, some amazing projects here Dan and great to see someone else doing some work on 1/43 vehicles! I like the Ergo tipper, I would like to do one of the later Ergomatic cab variant of a Blue Circle Leyland bison. Also the FFG looks a handy model so will keep my eyes peeled

I have also been partial to some IXO model bashing as well as a few Steve Beattie kits. Most of the transfers were custom ones from Steadfast models who have kept all the artwork on file so have things like numberplate, tax discs, name badges etc which maybe of use.

The line up below left to right is

    - Seddon Atkinson strato; much modified IXO Peagaso Troner

    - Leyland National; detailed Steve Beattie

    - Dodge BR personnel carrier; as above

    - Leyland FG van; Modified IXO

    - Sherpa van; Ex James Bond partwork with the damage removed

    20240405_122949.jpg.00623183b265a26dcc1d8442e29d7be9.jpg

On my Peasevern Yard thread there are some modified IXO Bedfords.

Look forward to seeing what you do next!

I remember as a teenager reading an article in RM on 901 and taking upon myself to modify an old Hornby 47 to her.  I was somewhat lacking in finesse with my technique for removing unneeded detail (including thick lines on sides) but managed to achieve something passable for 901. Sadly it all went wrong at the paint stage and heart was lost with the shell still languishing in a box somewhere i suspect….

Wasn’t there an intermediate stage where she was 601 and had class 56 bogies too?  Not familiar enough with all the changes made to say whether one body with 2 different bogies would cover 601 and 901?

As a Scottish region modeller I have no need for either but I would probably be tempted due to being a bit different. Anyway I’m sure she was loaned to Eastfield for some trials…….

I don't think 47601 ever had class 56 bogies, are you confusing 56042 which had class 58 bogies? I think there would be enough interest in 47601/901 as LTD edition but it the sort of thing that Heljan rather than Bachmann are likely to do based on past track record
