Meanwhile I have continued to further devalue my APT, one DTS now has a removable nose cone

Shane, that's really nice! Just a fake bulkhead, buffers and coupling now?

But no additional NDM - apart from on ebay at silly prices I don't think anyone has any left anywhere in the UK. If you know of any please let me know!!!

You could always buy a set and put the trailers on eBay?

If you sold the Driving trailer and TBF as a pair it would allow people to do a ‘nose up’ variant for drags…

In your video the first time the train goes around a curve it is obvious it is forced from the track by two cars touching. This is what was happening with mine with the hunt’s couplings.

Yes, that doesn’t look great. It would seem to be the connection between the development coach and the TBF. The corridor connections are obviously touching. When you turn the lights off, it’s also these two vehicles whose lights flicker on and off due to the bogies lifting. Maybe a fourth type of Hunts/Hunt/Hurst (what are they called again? :D) coupling is needed?

Shane, your capacitor comment is useful and will save Hornby returns department some faff. Well done #1 fanboy!

I've run my 14 car set on an admittedly flat but bumpy layout, with tight corners, at full speed, with one motorised power car, no issues at all. In fact I'm annoyed I wasted money on an extra powered NDM.

I'd recommend people take this on a case by case basis. Some people may need the extra motor car, others like myself will not.

    DC or DCC?

Stick with it. Perhaps paint it to make less plastic looking. I cant see anyone making one for it. I dont know is the Bachmann class 90 pan will fit, minus the servo drive etc. It also depends if you have overhead catenary and want it to act like a working one. Its up to you but I wouldn't let it stop you enjoying the model.

I checked Bachmann spares last week and the 90 pans are not available (yet) as spares.

Here you go, I decided a few minutes with file, snips and one screw was easy enough.

Horrible enlargements for you to judge the quality.

So is that supposed to be a Brecknell Willis or a Stone Faiveley? The upper arm looks like neither I'm afraid. And the collector doesn't look right either (for either of these types).

  7. DOGA intermediate (not fine) standard for back to back is actually 14.4mm. So even worse if you are finding them to be close to 15mm!

Edit: I have just taken a calliper to several vehicles straight out of the box and unrun and they are consistently 14.3mm. So If you are finding them to be 15mm maybe the wheels have moved on the axles whilst running?

You can get away with wider back to backs if the flanges are narrow. I measured them at 0.6mm. This is pretty good for modern OO which is often 0.8mm.

  8. Hi all,

The show is starting to take shape and I am keeping the Showcase Website updated as confirmations come in.

So far confirmed for layouts we have:

    • Burnroyd Works (4mm OO)
    • Clackmannan Goods (4mm P4)
    • Euxton Junction (4mm OO)
    • Hinksey Yard (2mm N)
    • Oak Road (4mm OO)
    • Splott (4mm P4)
    • Towcester (4mm OO)
    • Wellpark (4mm OO)

    More to follow...

    Yes Stu,

I was quite disappointed with them too. I found that you have to raise the lower part first, then adjust the top part and head angle after. Very flimsy, one half of mine was broken off too. I'm definitely looking to replace them.

At least the basic shape is right this time. The 1980s model had a boxy looking cab (definitely not right), over large cut outs around the bogies to accommodate tilt on train set curves and made large use of coloured plastic and crude seam lines to achieve the livery.

This is so much better as a base model regarding all of these points. I agree, it’s not perfect and there is scope for further detailing but it ain’t bad!

  10. That will require 3 additional vehicles tooling (SV4, FV4 and EDP3/1) so seems unlikely for something that never happened.... but we live in crazy times with all kinds of weird models now being produced RTR so never say never!

I know its slim to none but, wouldnt it be great if Hornby produced extra Driving trailer seconds so we could modify one to have the end opened to expose the conventional draw gear, alowing it to be towed by a loco.

I'd buy one.... might do this anyway!

  12. Shane, I agree about the ride height and/or tilt discrepancies. And agreed, I think that is what is being shown in the pic above. I was more struck in that shot by the huge damper(?) between vehicles that I had never seen before.

Regarding the vehicle at the heritage centre though, I will measure next time I am up there but the stripes look genuinely in a different position.

There is so much additional detail that you can see in these shots. Personally, I'm looking forward to modelling some of this. Just look at all the pipework coming out of the axlebox! I know Hornby have modelled some of this but I think there is much scope for improvement here on what they have done. At least the basic shape is right this time so we have a good base model to start from.

I think the vehicles might be able to be closely coupled with a bit of tweaking to the bogies.

  13. This gets curiouser and curiouser.

Here's a shot of a couple of vehicles from Crewe in 1983. Similar discrepancy in ride height (or is it paint?). Also, what's that ruddy big damper doing between the cars?

  14. Same issue is EDIT (maybe) obvious in this photo (cantrail lines up but the stripes don't). That said, I'm not sure the bottom of the windows line up either so vehicles might be at different heights or maybe the track isn't flat?
