As a matter of interest William (Bill) Stanier was a Permanent Way Inspector at Reading who retired in the late 1960s (although regrettably he dropped dead as he was making his way out of the office door for the last time on the day he finished). He was not related to the other William Stanier.
However a chap named Churchward who I worked with on the WR in the 1970s was distantly related to the great man. My Secretary in my final 'big railway' job had some years previously been Secretary to Bob Urie - who was in some way related to his far better known namesake.
There was a driver at Old Oak in the '80s who was related to Churchward by marriage Mike, although I forget his name now.

Every time I come back to this thread the memories of working on all of the 50s at Old Oak come flooding back - the sounds, the smells and the thrill of opening them up out of Padd on a rake of Mk1s or Mk2s, or even just pottering about the depot or doing the Acton and Park Royal trips with them. If you were on the shed turn you could easily drive ten or more of them in a shift, in and out of the servicing shed and on or off the 'table, taking them round to the Factory or fetching them out after a bit of attention. If the Factory had them on restricted working whilst awaiting parts etc we'd use them to turn the Penzance sleepers and take the stock over to Willesden via Greenford, West Ealing and Acton Wells, and it was a regular occurrence to have them on the Aylesbury papers. If I had a pound for every cuppa I've downed sitting in the cab of a 50 on the blocks at Padd I'd be well in by now!
I usually found them easier to drive standing up, as if I had the seat high enough to see over the desk my feet would barely reach the dead man's treddle!

Imagine how gobsmacked I was when this Series 1 1964 Maserati Sebring turned up at a local meet this evening, rare enough to start with but even rarer in RHD...

Thanks for the correction, not sure why I typed Wednesfield 😉

Just got back from the 'Auto-Italia' day at Brooklands where my eyes were out on stalks as usual - I'll upload some photos later but what a cracking day it was, Fiats, Ferraris, Lancias, Lamborghinis, Alfas and Abarths galore, old and new, with some very rare gems amongst them.

Back in the 60s and 70s it was often the case that it wasn’t just “the best actor for the job”, but that X was “the only actor for [that sort of] job”.
You want an oily-looking, smarmy-sounding gent of vaguely Levantine appearance? You need Steve Plytas! You want an Eastern European, rather sinister looking, Putin before Putin type? You want Vladek Sheybal! A cynical, coldly calculating Nazi? Anton Diffring is your man!
A look at the cast lists of many of the series dramas of the day will see these guys appearing time after time.
Vladek Sheybal was cast as a doctor in 'UFO', slightly against type but still with that sinister vibe he so often gave on screen.
See also :
George Murcell, often cast as a Russian, Eastern European or occasionally South American in numerous ITC series and the odd film...
Roger Delgado, the go to actor for a middle eastern sheik and fabulous as the original Master in Dr.Who...
Derek Newark, a regular ITC supporting actor when a bit of good old fashioned British thuggery was needed...
Oh, and talk of Peter Salis in 'Last Of The Summer Wine' reminded me that he played a sinister villain in an episode of 'The Persuaders' before landing the part of Clegg!
