  1. $!*&! Messed up applying LSWR lettering from the HMRS pressfix sheet... and there's only one set of each size of lettering per sheet... Another £7.50 to get another sheet of mostly Southern lettering I won't use!

Maybe try and find a southern modeller with the LSWR half to trade with?

PM me the sheet number, I might have some spare ...

  2. 5 x Hachette Mk1 SKs... Check. One bottle of T-Cut... Check. Dremel? Where's the Dremel?

If you can't find the Dremel head over to Lidl's on Monday

      Trainshed Terry

      That was yesterday

  3. Agreed to try to repair an old Hornby tender-drive A4... finally got the thing running, set it to run in on the rolling road, then smoke and sparks from inside the motor! Any suggestions?

Jon: Thanks, will have another look this evening. Half tempted to return the whole thing as a lost cause!

  4. Amazing what a lick of paint'll do, isn't it Gromit?

Painting the wheels of a Mainline loco to remove the big chunky silver rims makes a heck of a difference!

  5. Anyone else remember those GEM working ground signals? Trying to get hold of a few. They're rare enough to make me wonder if I just imagined their existence!

So they *do* exist! I swear, if I could ever find them on eBay... I want at least two!

  6. Apparently has a Peckett waiting under the tree...

Apparently I have one sat in the sorting office!

  7. appears to have successfully constructed a PWM controller (or at least the circuitry) for under a tenner.

  8. Been commissioned to paint a lovely 5" gauge NER E class 0-6-0T. Now if only I could work out what colours to paint it!

      NER Darlington Green?

It's the lining I'm having trouble with - all the photos of Es (J71s) are lined differently and in obviously different colours from the pictures of E1s (J72s) which have what I would call standard NER lining. But all the photos are in black and white!

  9. Building a Revell BR02 kit with my flatmate. Neither of us had realised that it included inside cylinders, complete with cranked axle!

    1. Horsetan

      Horsetan

Your next challenge is to make it all revolve and reciprocate! The Br.02 was a 4-cyl compound, just to heap further misery! Deutsche Reichsbahn had them rebuilt to 2-cyl "01" form.

  10. Building my second kit from Petite Properties, and delighted so far!

    1. Jonboy

      Jonboy

      They are very nice kits.

  11. Built a kit, no trouble at all, now sitting swearing at handrail knobs. How do people manage?

Glad it's not just me then! Trying to do all the front-end handrails on an industrial tank engine - boiler side, tank front and smokebox front handrails all next to each other!

  12. Considering putting two years of uni studying Electronics to the test and building a PWM controller...

  13. Dead chuffed with that - picked up a new Hornby A3 for

  14. Delighted by the discovery that students get a free 3-year AutoCAD license!

      It's brilliant isn't it!

  15. Does anyone else find painting the chevrons on distant signals really hard work?

  16. Drawing a track plan for Knapford Junction...

  17. Fiddling around with a Hornby Pug, a Dapol Pug kit and trying to make a vaguely industrial-looking shunter...

  18. Finally getting around to joining my local MRC!

  19. finds it frustrating returning from university to hear "Oh, your mum knocked *list of scenery items* off the layout while you were away..."

  20. First attempts at lining transfers... Other than getting orange instead of red (whoops!) not going badly at all!

  21. First point laid and working with Mercontrol. That was surprisingly easy!

  22. Got an interview in the morning that will determine whether or not I get to do a PhD in Railway Safety Systems - looking into fitting steam locos with ERTMS!

Dutch_Master: Interesting thought, thank you! Given that most locos run with support coaches, that's a possibility...

Now there's a fascinating challenge - more like an impossible dream I suspect but good luck.

      Very much good luck

  23. Got my first ever kit-built chassis up and running. It's cogging a bit but otherwise smooth, just need a replacement bolt to hold the dummy bogie on (oops!)

  24. Got some lovely Gibson trailing wheels on a 2mm axle for my D1, but the bushings in the chassis kit (already fitted) are for 1/8" axles, and nobody else seems to do 18mm non-driving wheels.

Yes and I think someone does 1/8th to 2mm stepped axles, I'll look it up after lunch out.

That's very helpful, thanks to both of you!

  25. Had the email that my Hornby H class is in the post. Excitement!
