  1. On the Hornby Show, that I was watching last night, great show was made of getting all the wheels the same distance apart. This morning I received an email from Hattons re pre-ordering and there was the 9F still with the spacing of the wheels incorrect. I assume they are using out of date artwork. If so that's not very clever.

I had a few things to do this morning so only a short session today, accompanied by commentary from the first Test at Nagpur.

I did have enough time to connect all the red, black and green (frog) rails to the choccy block connectors for the six point motors. I also connected them to 35 point motor itself (the point that leads to Platform 3), so that I could remove the frog jumper and run trains in and out of Platform 3 using the permanent wiring.

I'll try to do the same for the other five points over the weekend and also connect the blue return wire for each point motor to its bus. The brown feeds will have to wait until I assemble the Pentowan temporary point control panel though.

I hope you are not too depressed after listening to the cricket!

D831 'Monarch' was working a north-bound inter-regional express from Bristol TM, via the Midland main line, when it developed mechanical problems at Mangotsfield and had to be assisted to Westerleigh Yard by one of the yard pilots. A Hymek was sent by Bath Road to take the train forward and the Warship languished in the yard, until a fitter attended and rectified the relatively simple fault that had caused it to fail.

The yard foreman then 'borrowed' the loco to cover part of a local trip working diagram, before sending it back southwards to it's home depot in Devon, and thus it was snapped at Callow Lane by Dick Wolsley, who just happened to be visiting, in the hope of seeing the Coalville Johnson 2F, that had been rumoured to be working in the area.

  4. Jeremy,

Another tip. When it comes to painting, temporarily bolt the fold up chassis and retaining plate together so that yo don't get any paint on the abutting faces. You will also need to mask off the chassis for the bearings as there are no hornguides. It's probably worth chemically blackening the area before hand as any bare metal exposed when you remove the masking will show through behind the wheels. As the bearings themselves are quite large, it's also worth blackening the outer faces of those as well.

If you do have any specific problems, I will do my best to help.

  5. Jeremy,

I cut off the guard irons and fabricated new ones. The coupling pocket needed filing back and I fitted a representation of the AWS pickup from styrene.

It's very important to make sure the retaining plate fits snugly inside inside the fold up chassis and that both of these and the Hornby chassis are absolutely true. I soldered a washer under the second screw hole in the retaining plate where there is nothing between it and the Hornby chassis. This needs to be exactly the same thickness as the fold up chassis.

Otherwise I pretty much just followed the instructions.

  6. Another fine day for a bike ride. Still plenty of water in our local reservoir.

Had to stop off for a choc ice on the way home. Our second visitor from the USA this week in the marina.

Fingers crossed she can retain her title World Champs in Les Gets; although I suspect PFP and Lecomte will be hard to beat.

Those two haven't been doing so well this year in the World Cup races, did they opt out of the North American Rounds?  Yolanda Neff was on fine form at the weekend. Seems crazy having the European and World championships on successive weekends. I see Tom Pidcock is entered in the Europeans.

  8. Back on the bike after time off with a nasty leg infection.

Only 30km as a starter. From this point it's only 3km to home as the crow flies (or should that be seagull) but 9km by road.

Spent today watching the Commonwealth Games XC racing at Cannock Chase.  Really good day out and great to see Evie Richards take the win in this afternoon’s race.
