  1. Some interesting ties in the European Cup draws.

    Chelsea vs. Napoli

    Arsenal vs. Milan

Both really tricky ties, but some degree of advantage to the two English teams as the first games are away.

Um, as its a case of the British teams are away first, it ought to be listed as such

    • Napoli (ITA) v Chelsea (ENG)
    • AC Milan (ITA) v Arsenal (ENG)

We get that all the time in the Aussie media, where many of the news sources change league results to put the winning sides first, having gone through the wins, then they list the draws. Never do understand why they go to the trouble of rewriting it. Probably to do with re-enforcing the view that 'Soccer' is a boring game.

  2. Well, somebody somewhere loves the beast! Maybe it represents a fictional Collet re-build? (in your nightmares!)......

Perhaps its someone's dream that Stanier never left the GWR!

  3. I've seen one or two oddities around.

WGL 1T (Wiggle it - driven by a female)

YAP 41T (Yap 4 it - driven by a dog groomer)

B19 BUS (Big Bus - on a double-deck Neoplan Skyliner coach)

Out here in Oz the rules are a little less restrictive and we can have almost any combination of six characters (7 in two states) resulting in a great many personal plates appearing:

KIA RIO, SUBARU, TOYOTA (Make and model)

    BIGGA 1 (Yes, it's a big car!)

    FASTA 1 (It was)

WOGBOY (Used here as a term to refer to certain nationalities rather than any race or colour; not considered offensive)

    PLUMMA (man, van and pipes!)

TRAMMY (the nickname applied to our tram drivers)

    2PLZYU (To please you)

    69GALS (Need I say more?)

KIMMYS (I didn't ask her name...)

    And many many more

FNBIG used to drive past my place regularly. It was an F100 FWD.

  4. Does that mean you will be an hour nearer to my time or another hour further away?

Day dawned bright and relatively clear BUT. weather forecast is rain by noon.

Being close to the mountain means that we can have our own unique weather pattern making accurate forecasting impossible.

    Happy Sunday all.

    They're going back.

Just hope the RMWeb clock doesn't move everyone about, because we changed at the start of the month and it took a couple of goes to get the time right.

Odd showers all day in eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

  5. 0207-35353535 Chelsea help line.

A very uneven set of results from some of the top sides in the Premier League so far.

Not looking forward to the Wolves score today unless MCFC implode.

That's OK, we can handle it. Unlike other big results, it's only a difference of 2.

  6. Currently under construction is a glorified 'Inglenook' design, intended to sit in what is known hereabouts as my 'library' a 5'0" x 5'0" glorified cupboard.

    .

Two fiddle boards will be built to enable enhanced operation e.g. through trains, and the exchange of stock to/from the yard - and attached to the layout when operated outside its normal home, or possibly when exhibited.

    .

A seperate thread, charting 'Coldblow Lane's' development will hopefully begin shortly elsewhere on the forum.

    .

It is intended to use Kadee couplings on some (modern-ish) stock, but other stock will be equipped with three link couplings.

    .

The concept is shown on the attached plan, and it is my intention to place Kadee delayed magnets under the track at the heal of the points of all three sidings i.e. Exchange Siding, No.1 and No.2 roads instead of just one at the toe of the headshunt point.

    .

My reasoning is that previous experience has shown that Kadees can be tempremental at times on such curves and over pointwork.

    I'm seeking opinions and experience of other contributors. . . . .

    .

The floor is yours folks ......

    .

    Brian R

Sorry Brian, but you are in big trouble in hoping to use Kadee's on a curve. They are designed for straight track only, because the magnets can only pull evenly, so if the pins are are offset, they will BOTH pull to the one side - the more powerful force, which will be the outside.

    From the Kadee website kadee.com

Sam the Answer Man: #43 May 2010 “Uncoupling”

"To go along with many current discussions about “uncoupling” I’m going to briefly cover a few important aspects of coupling and uncoupling.

Kadee® couplers are designed to couple and uncouple on a “straight” piece of track. If the couplers are off center even a little bit they usually will not uncouple. For hands off coupling the couplers need to be aligned straight with each other where the contour of the knuckles allows them to slip by each other, pushing the opposing coupler open until the lip of the knuckles pass and the knuckle spring closes the knuckles. Now the lips of the knuckles are indexed or locked together. The knuckle spring allows the knuckle to flex and compress during operations and yet holds them together. To uncouple you, again, need to be on a straight section of track long enough for your two longest models, then allow slack between the knuckles. The coupler will not open without enough slack for the lips to unhook or pass each other. Methods of uncoupling may vary from our tried and true magnetic uncoupling to the many home built and commercial manual uncoupling tools. Our Delayed Magne-Matic® Uncoupling System, has been around since the late 1950s and is still the primary method of uncoupling for many modelers. When you stop over one of our magnetic uncouplers and allow slack between the couplers the magnet will pull the trip pins of the couplers in opposite directions thus opening the couplers. As long as you are over the magnet the couplers will stay open (delayed position) now you can push the cars back together and the couplers will not lock up but keep each other opened as you push off the uncoupling magnet. As long as you keep pushing pressure on the open couplers they will not lock up. Now you can push the uncoupled car and spot it almost anywhere on your layout. When you pull away the couplers will snap back to center and be ready to be coupled again. This

Magne-Matic Delayed Uncoupling® is a complete hands off coupling and uncoupling system. For those who like the full experience of manual uncoupling and have the eye sight and dexterity needed there are many different manual uncoupling tools available (Kadee’s #241) or many modelers make their own from skewers and such. Again allowing slack insert the tool between the knuckles, without forcing, then with a gentle twist the couplers will pop open. This sometime takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it but once learned the uncoupling comes almost naturally.

Next month I cover electric uncouplers and a bit on remote uncoupling."

I think you'll find the same issue with most uncouplers, they rely on straight track. You may get away with short wheelbase vehicles as your radius is fairly generous, but you will be pushing the boundary (not least in installing the magnet). Lay a test piece of track at your minimum radious & try it.

  7. Carlos Tevez: words fail me. What an utterly disgraceful thing to do. All that talent and money, and acting like a petulant manchild.

I despair for the top echelons of football. I much preferred listening to my team on the radio in a thrilling 1-1 draw. Plenty of action in MK Dons 1 - 1 Charlton Athletic, and none of the bitter stuff!

It looks like West Ham are showing interest now. You'd think they would have learnt from being burnt the first time.

  8.

And guess what - I am currently looking for a (Mac compatible as it happens) database program to record my book/ephemera/historical info library onto and have a nice searchable facility to let me find things by subject heading and shelf location as well as title. While visiting one retail establishment on Friday one of their resident 'experts' recommended that I use Excel (seems the fact that I wasn't convinced was probably nearer the truth than his recommendation :scratchhead:).

Too bad your insistent on the Mac format :nono:

I'm using the excellent BookCat program which is excellent for doing exactly this.

  9. "aged and a little warn" adds a certain charm to the ad, too.

Point of accuracy, though - do we believe that Box Tunnel leads to the West of England, when I would have thought, then and now, that what I call the W of E is generally accessed via Newbury, or is that just the South West?

Well some think that 'Watford' is in the North.

  10. It's all about balance Kevin. I'll be the first to admit that some H&S thinking does appear ludicrous but there is a time honoured viewpoint here in the sense that there is a right and a wrong side of the railway boundary and this guy is very much on the wrong one.

There is no ambiguity as regards railway trespass - it is an absolute offence in that you are either on the railway (either on or near the line or lineside as defined by the rulebook) or you aren't. The only possible defence against the offence of trespass is that you were there in order to prevent the loss of life and limb; eg trying to stop a train running into a landslide by waving your bright red bloomers at it!

    Dave.

    Hi Dave & others.

I think you have misunderstood what I was saying.

This guy is clearly the wrong side of the fence & thus is undoubtably trasspassing and further more, by the look on his face in one of the photos, he knows full well that he is. So I hope the LAW catches up with him.

Can I make it any clearer?

What I was trying to say that other threads do seem to imply that H&S is often a joke and sometimes it is, but not always. So we should be careful, before rubbishing H&S.

    But lets move on.

    Kevin Martin

  11. No excuse for idiotic behaviour, of course, but a lot of members of the older generation will remember the days when BR encouraged enthusiasts on tours to walk all over the place.

I have photos of a trip round the Britannia Bridge in its original form where there was clearly no restriction at all on where people went - they're spread all over the running lines, and not a high-vis in sight - and I promise you that that wasn't unusual then. So people who were used to the old free-for-all probably regard the current situation as namby-pamby Elf'n'Safety that doesn't apply to them.

    Fools!

Just as an aside, there are plenty of other threads/comments within RMWeb where the intent is to decry H&S as being over the top and that people should 'be responsible for their own actions'.

Clearly it is a fine line between what is right & what is wrong. Posters should be very careful when rubbishing H&S examples IMO. There may well have been an incident of some type that the author of this new 'rule' is trying to prevent a repeat of and yet seems funny upon reading, later.

  12.

I looked at the Hornby ''HM'' too but I prefer contre-off controls rather than a reversing switch which is one of the reasons I am considering the Hammant and Morgan. Unfortunately, most manufacturers use a reversing switch now so I am not giving myself much choice.

Actually the link you gave at the start of this thread has a controller that does this - in fact it is selectable as a center off or a separate switch.

Go down the bottom to the orange prototype controller and see the description there. There is a link to the what he says is the production version. The P684SV, it sounds like it is a very flexible controller. Perhaps email him to see if still available?

Personally, I'd go DCC, because in the long run you'd get better performance and probably not much more. I wouldn't even consider the H&M path except for possibly the PowerMaster. The others only any good for older motors as others have said.

Are still trying to get your Dean Singles to work properly & is this the reason for looking at the H&M's?

  13.

He wouldn't be the only one.

In the mid-80's, a certain car salesman from BMW Park Lane was taken along The Mall in a demonstrator 635CSi by a prospective customer. Said customer touched 100mph.

I recall seeing some clown try to beat a red light in Melbourne, Australia.

It was about 5.00pm on a damp Friday afternoon. It was outside Flinders Street Station which has an enormous number of pedestrians crossing the road to get to the station which is amongst the world's busiest.

The lights turned amber & there is a roar of a V8 being gunned, I look up and see a car in Flinders Street about half a city block away coming from Elizabeth Street (near Degraves Street entrance to any one who knows the area). Such was the noise that no one stepped into the road.

He realised once around Y&J's (a famous pub on the corner with Swanston Street) that he wasn't going to make it (perhaps he remembered that the W Class trams cross there and they aren't known for collision friendliness to other vehicles, being basically a steel girder on wheels), so hit the anchors, sliding sideways into the middle of the intersection. The angry looking copper on point duty came across to exchange pleasantries with him!

This would have been about the late 1970s.

  14.

As for Wenger, it's a question of whether he jumps before he's pushed. I reckon he'll be 'Spending more time with his family' by May.

I don't know. I'm happy with his performance. The longer he puts off buying players he really does need, can only help other more deserving ambitious sides hold onto the top 4 places.

  15.

Phone companies do a lot of invoicing between themselves - not only with national calls, but also with international calls. These are called bilateral agreements and the 'owner' of the last mile raised the final invoice to the customer- an 0800 call from one country to another is not delivered FOC... dilbert

Whether or not there is a payment required, surely the called 'owner' is expected to deliver what is being sent to it. If anything it is up to the 'originator' party to determine whether or not it is worthy of sending it (perhaps on the basis the phone bill is up to date).

So the problem with these calls, as per the OP, is with the 'originating network' and so there is little the 'local' phone company can do, as British, Australian or wherever laws cannot apply if from offshore.

The same applies (sadly) to email spam, since no one is going to sue a sender 'protected' by the laws (maybe there aren't even any) of another country.

    Kevin Martin

  16. There's no good reason why a legitimate business should not give out their number. I take your point re police, etc, but any busiiness should be happy to do this. The reason they don't is they don't want you tracing them. The telephone companies make an awful lot of money from these so called businesses, that appears to be one reason why it continues to go on.

The TPS are powerless if the caller says they are conducting a survey, they have to be selling you something. Of course at the end of the survey the sales pitch kicks in, by then it's too late.

    Rob

    Absolutely.

Some of these callers won't even give their business name, they just spout off their headline. An example being that since you are a loyal customer, you don't need to pay phone line rental any more, blah, blah, blah. An obvious give away, to me at least.

As for the phone companies 'making money from them', if the caller is from overseas, they don't make anything I believe. Don't they have an international agreement (like postal services) to deliver incoming calls for free?

The trouble is with exemptions is that they get broken. A medical doctor, might what to have his number blocked with good reason, but what about another doctor, who is a doctor of music?
