  1. You could possibly consider my 'Enigma Engineering' concept?  Should fit fine into the space you've got and the industries could mirror the ones served by MSC lines.  No absolute need for a fiddle yard.  My American version (Peforia Narrows) doesn't have one and it is no detriment to the operating potential.

I first became aware of the MSC railway when going with my Dad to the timber and veneer suppliers (can't remember the name) when he was buying venners for his furniture factory.  The railway was along the road outside and I was very confused by a loco which had a number that didn't appear in the Western Region Ian Allan ABC.:scratchhead:

  2. I fill rail breaks on points and plain track with a short length of microstrip (20thou?) dipped in epoxy and trimmed when the epoxy is cured.

Even as a P4 modeller, I have to say that if anyone can get close enough to comment on the fact that the chairs around the crossing on a point are incorrect - then they're to damn close!

All this is excellent Wayne, you are to be congratulated.

I have cycled from Hope up Pindale Hill and round the back of the cement works quarry. A ride I will do just the once, thank you :o

I ended coming down a hill into Bradwell which was so steep I had to get off for fear of going over the handlebars.  The only time I have failed on a hill descent :P

I do like the idea of a cement works layout,  some nice choices of stock available in a variety of eras.

There's some 'interesting' off-road trails around the back of the cement works taking you up onto the moors.

  4. I saw North West Frontier in the cinema as a young lad and really enjoyed it.  I always try to watch it if it comes on the telly.  It was on sometime last year.

Regarding the layout on Father Brown, does anyone know anything about it?  It seemed to be a model of the Glos & Wrks Rlwy station used in the series where the character who allegedly built the layout worked.  The series is set around 1953/4 I believe and tha layout was said to have been started 30 years previous.  The builder must have been well ahead of his time, using Streamline track, Airfix buildings etc.

After more than 4 years (where has it gone??!!!) I'm revisiting this thread, not to post news of any developments, but to say that I've hardly touched it during this time.  In fact, it has become a bit of a dumping ground for all sorts of things.  I have become a lot more involved with my British modelling in P4, especially industrials and Western Region, so much so that I would like to start a new P4 layout - but space to do so is a problem.  I may therefore take the decision to part with the WM layout and stock so if anyone may be interested in acquiring it then please PM me to discuss.

The layout is still in a condition of suspended animation along with all the WM (and B&O, Pennsy, Reading, N&W etc.!) stock.  I will be happy to part with it (for a realistic sum) if anyone is interested.  Please PM me for details.

I get my second dose at 9am new years day. So no partying for me on new years eve as it will be a 52 mile round trip to get it..... :(

How did you manage that!?  I've no idea when I will get my first and I'm (allegedly) high(ish) on the list at 74.

  7. A friend and well-known P4 modeller with a large continuous layout (1950' BR steam) that has appeared in print started using scale length track panels but discovered that the almost inevitable thrupenny/20p'ing effect on curves radically reduced the running qualities.  Relaying with long rail lengths and 'artificial' joints completely cured this and the layout is now the epitome of good running with long trains.

  8. Happens in the classic racing bike world (yes, there is one!).  Whole bikes fitted with top end 'old' components are bought by 'dealers', taken apart and the frame and components sold seperately on the web.  The parts are worth more than the whole.  Happened to a bike I sold to someone who pestered me to sell it and the next time I saw it was in bits on e-bay. Some of the parts were on offer individually for half of what he bought the bike for!

  9. Andy?  Who's Andy?  I know I'm quite 'handy' at railway modelling but I've never been called Andy before!  However, it's one of the nicer things I've been called over the years:)

I think a 4000 gallon tender is way to big for a mogul so I might pass for now, thanks all the same.  I'm sure I'll be able to work something out using the Comet etches and a similar method to yours.

Or I could just power the loco as 'normal'......................:senile:
