  1. There have been a couple of articles on the history of Trafford Park in recent issues of 'Archive' magazine. The Oxford Publishing book on the Manchester Ship Canal gives a lot of information on the canal railway and how it integrates into Trafford Park. I can remember being there in the mid 80's when there was a clearing out of old wagons from the steel works site (at least I think it was a steel works?). The resulting train blocked several road crossings - but it didn't bother me!
  2. Nice ballast coloured carpet though.
  3. ' Yes it was LNER with the fastest train in the World running on it' I remember that! It was Silver Jubilee and they manually held it in one fiddle yard with the controller turned fully on, let it go flat out through the station - and caught it in the fiddle yard at the other end! I believe that very occasionally things did go awry with 'impressive' results!
  4. Oh dear, sorry, yes, you're totally correct. I hadn't looked at those Wonder why they weren't in the box with the other bits? Perhaps the originals got lost over the years - or used for something else!.
  5. TBH, I can't actually see any bogies in the box. The illustration on the lid shows sprung arch bar style, which are similar to some the GWR used on some bogie freight stock.
  6. Just found this on e-bay while idly trawling through the kits section. First time I've seen one in the wood and metal. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kirdon-OO-HO-model-railway-rolling-stock-US-box-car-wagon-kit-Santa-Fe-/141557819146 An unbuilt box car kit - any takers? Not mine I hasten to add!
  7. This thread is all starting to sound a bit fishy to my way of thinking.
  8. Totally unintended! Never thought about it............. As is often the case.
  9. Foster or faster progress? Or both? Good haul of Monon stock BTW.
  10. Well, it was 20 years ago. I have a long memory. Especially for these sort of events..............................
  11. Are the numbers easily changeable? In the current price climate they'll need to be!
  12. Nothing to do with Tina Turner I trust? Saw a similar thing when out on my mountain bike once. Parked up a narrow track, I had to push past and saw a hairy bottom wiping the condensation off the window as I rocked the car. I think they were a little surprised. I've never been the same since...........................
  13. I have to admit to doing just this when a building only gets viewed from one side. At least I can now rest easy knowing I am in good company
  14. Hmm, I'm not sure if this is strictly correct TBH. When I did the research for the MRI article I found some info in an old HMRS magazine about their 'provenance' and it wasn't to do with rebuilding standard wagons. I'll have to turn the article up and check but I thought they were rebuilds of an earlier brake van/wagon or similar, a drawing of which was in the HMRS publication. This is what provided the basic dimensions etc. I used for my drawing of the Clee Hill wagons. Don't remember the Cromford & High Peak having any such wagons, the ascending/descending wagons were attached directly to the haulage cable. Weren't they?
  15. Definitely not me................................... Unless it's a railway related funeral.
  16. I remember an old mate of mine rubbing Fiery Jack on his legs before the start of an early season bike race. Then he went for a pee....................................
  17. It might well be our old and now sadly departed club member Ted driving that WD. Lovely images - but were ARE the spotters? Hiding in the shed, ABC's at the ready? Gaberdine macs and school caps akimbo?
  18. I'll bet they smell even more objectionable after an hour of that!
  19. The 'shop' I remember in Chester was down a street that went to the right of the Wrexham Rd. not far from Davies bike shop. It was on an upper floor of a terraced building (possibly an old house?) and had a display case on the ground floor full of Hornby 0 Gauge - to which I 'donated' a loco and coaches. It was the first place I saw such exotica as K's kits and Peco track and I think that some of the younger members of the Chester MRC either worked or spent their Saturdays there. This would have been in the late 50's. There was also a toy shop at the end of one of the small 'cul-de-sacs' on The Rows but I knew of this when I was quite young. It was a place I was taken to for a look in the window as a treat if I had been a 'good boy' on one of my mother's shopping trips, the best bit of which was the bus ride from Wrexham on the top deck of a Crosville Bristol double decker!
  20. Yes, I saw that and wondered if it was 'our' Dave. A sad loss from both points of view.
  21. 'force them to take part in the monday morning training session. ' Which from the noises emanating therefrom yesterday at 8.00am sounded exceptionally brutal
  22. He's repairing the broken seat - according to Geoff anyway. In my mind he's walking and talking to a guy sitting down by the hut - and about to have a painful meeting with the back end of the tractor!
  23. Some photos taken at our appearance at Wakefield over the weekend. For a brief report of how it went please visit the Wakefield thread in 'Exhibitions'. First and second, the locos for the northbound 'Alouette' prepare to exchange places. The houses at the Wells River end. Spookily there appears to be someone in the upstairs bedroom of the nearest house! A lot of talking and not much working in the MoW yard. The Fruit and Veg Mechant open for business. Agricultural Dealers with plenty of machinery for sale - including 2 vintage tractors courtesy of Long Island Jack. Many thanks from the team Jack. And a Manure Spreader on the back of the red truck. Those naughty troublesome Cement Hoppers deciding where to go next! (Probably Nottingham - in March!) EDIT - thanks for the comments, only saw them after I'd posted!
