You can check pickups on the bench using DCC in exactly the same way that you use DC - no difference, but you may want to make CV3 and CV = 0 before you start to ensure that the locos run without the extreme inertia characteristics that are often used.

I assume the second DCC statement means DC? In which case you need to read CV 29 and add 4 to the value that you read. You can check the setting by using this link. (if the value already in CV29 shows that DC running is already enabled then you would appear to have an issue.

Thanks Iain, I have edited that to read DC

  2. I have a couple of DCC loco which are really indifferent runners on track, is there a way to check pickups in DCC.

Using DC I used to have two pieces of wire which I could touch to individual wheels to test.

I have read that DCC loco should work with DC, but mine dont seem to want to.

    Any advice please?

  3. I have 3 baseboards each is connected to the control panel by a 25 pin cable, this handles, signals, turnouts, lighting etc.

I have an idea! Could I connect the DCC controller (Prodigy Express) and distribute the power yo each baseboard through the 25 pin cables?

Or will passing it through 1 metre long cables degradation the signal?

  4. I have discovered the decoder on my Hattons 58XX is a Zimo. (CV8-145)

The engine will drive but I get no sound anymore.

I cannot find a list of functions for this loco, and wondered if one is available.

I have found a PDF about Zimo decoders, but, Its a but confusing.

Newbie to DCC, I have other locos working well, but, this one wont

"The line opened for operations from 10 April 1863. It was worked by typical CR motive power of 0-6-0 and GWR 2301 Class "Dean Goods" up till the mid-1950s after which Ivatt Class 2 locomotives of the 46503–46527 series were almost exclusively used. Operations on the line were controlled by signal boxes at: Llanymynech; Llansantffraid; and Llanfyllin."

Ive been researching and modelling this branch for over 10 years originally in P4 (I gave up as I didn't have the skills to ensure precise running) Now in OO.

As well as Cambrian 0-6-0, I have photo of Cambrian 0-4-4. When GWR took over 517 were the usual loco, with Dean Goods and Tanat Valley2-4-0. Collett 58xx took over as the main workhorse then into BR with Ivatt Class 2 and 74xx.

This is the first photo I've seen of Dean Good in Llanfyllin, others are photos from Oswestry

I suspect it’s a wire getting caught between the body and chassis on reassembly. Check the resoldered wire isn’t fouling at the top or side of the motor to the body/boiler, it is s very tight clearance.

I’ve had two of them apart (see link), and can’t recall any specific problems with body to chassis reassembly. Obviously just make sure there’s no other things like brake gear or sanding pipes fouling on the body/chassis when it goes back together.

Thanks I filed a couple of Vees in the weight and put a couple of drops of superglue to hold the 4 wires. That seemed to sort it. Whilst I have the cab roof off I need to paint up some crew and jobs a gud un

  7. I have a 58xx version of this loco, which stopped running, it is about 4 years old fso out of warranty. I followed another thread on here about dismantling and managed to getthe body off and dismantled the chassis. Great. Found a loose wire, resoldered back on and motor runs.

However. Reassembling the thing has got me stumped. I cannot get the body to fit close up to the footplate........

I think it is possibly the wiring between the block weight and the body, but I can't see anyway else to run it.

    Has anyone any ideas?

  8. I have a Prodigy Express . I havent used it for about 4 months as Ive been working on another board. Plugged it in today, I get a power light, but, nothing happens on the track. I checked the voltage on the track and I have 3.7 v AC.

Im really confused as last time I used it I had 15 V. I also checked the voltage at the output from the hub and getting similar. Any idea what is wrong?

  9. I have just bought a 4mm Dapol Junction Signal from DVV Supplies which is being sold as Grade 2 for £18.00 inc Postage. There is no Servo box included. I have sorted it with two Tower (G servos, but, I cannot get the LED to light. On the bottom of the signal there are three contacts , one common and one each for each LED.

    Two possibilities, (possibly more)

    1. They are broke

    2. there are some gubbins in the servo box to reduce voltage from 12v

I'm not too worried as I have already powered two single Dapol signals with a servo and fitted them with Modelu Signal lights containing 1mm LED, however it would be easier if I could power the existing LED, does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for posting this up, it's given me the inspiration to finish my 517 class conversion of a 14xx and to dig another one out for conversion to 48xx for my upgraded autocoach. That's also down to your dad's pickup conversion,

I had my first Airfix 14xx when I was about 12 and it was a disappointing runner from new, although the less said about the awful mixture of points and track it had to deal with the better!

I would be interested to see what you are doing to convert the 14xx to a 517. I want to do one too

  11. Just found this thread, I live in Hindley and walk down the old Whelley loop through Amberswood with our dogs every day. We've looked at some old maps  , but today at a caravan site in Devon I found Old DVDs of British Steam, one of them had a Section on Wigan and showed trains climbing the Whelley Loop through Amberswood west junction.

I am building a model railway in my shed, however, I was bought up in GWR Country some trains are green with copper chimneys.

Would love to know more about the Railways around Amberswood
