  1. Betta builder was kind of Airfix's competitor to Lego - not quite compatible though, so very fruustrating when you had a mix (as I know ;))

I had loads of Betta Builder as a kid, wonder where it all went. Somewhere buried beneath this Sceptred Isle.............

Back on topic: Nice bit of work with the Wings. Will they be all weathered in situ?

  2. Thats Nothing Simon, I dropped my SLR Camera onto the Cattle Dock on Llanfyllin, wiping out most of the scratchbuilt Dock and a P4 Cattle Wagon which was posing alongside it. Made me think about how I now take photos at exhibitions.

I love this layout, very good modelling and a refreshing subject. Static grass is an amazing addition to our hobby isn't it

  3. I love this Nick, I lived just outside Newent until 1970, I can vaguely remember seeing a 48xx pulling a train whilst I was in an ambulance travelling from Ledbury to hereford after my tonil operation went badly wrong.

As Army cadets in the late 60's we used to patrol the station area in Newent and also the disused railway track. I was part of a Bren Gun Team, others would be armed with 303 and SMG. I cannot imagine 12 - 13 year old boys being allowed on the streets now with proper rifles (albeit no ammo) training to to defend a disused railway station

  4. Nice looking Locos, I love the 48xx, I am just building another 58xx for my layout, I am interested how you created the hooks on the back for the fire iron? I have made some using flattened .45 mm brass wire, but, could not get a uniform shape as you have.

  5. Popped in today to get a few odds and sods, some Evergreen strip and ended up with a selection of woodlands scenics to make a start on my allotments.

Was asked behind the counter to select the plastic strips I needed, always a friendly welcome and spend far too long browsing, (should be in work around the corner) looking for the elusive 1930's motor vehicle to put on the model or just dreaming about the models on display

  6. Welshpool 7th October,

I'll be there with Pen Y Bont

    Cheers!

    Frank

Was hoping to be able to pop down for this, I was thinking of bringing a couple of the buildings from Llanfyllin, BUT, I have now been invited to attend a Fly Fishing Course with Fishing for Heroes, so unfortunately I will not be attending. Maybe next year

  7. Thanks for the link Nick, very useful. Also, your 'ballasting' is soooo neat! It is also interesting to see how you gently sculpted the landscape in the early days of build.

Looking at the magazine shots above its hard to associate the finished product with the photos on your archived thread!

Personally, I think some of the shots with photoshopped fields and hills in the back ground look more convincing than the sky-only shots. I particularly like the second to last one - fantastic!

    Thanks again.

I agree about the shots with the added backgrounds I particularly love the second to last and the shot of the bridge with the cider factory in the background, but the bestest is the photo showing the layout from a position above the station. Very clever photo manipulation.

To be truthful the ones I saw in the magazine I thought had been taken outside and that was a natural background

  8. A gorgeous model, with loads of atmosphere, I saw it in Hornby Mag (in fact the reason why I bought it.

I lived just outside Newent until 1970 and one of my memories of Steam was being taken in an ambulance from Ledbury Cottage Hospital to Hereford after my tonsillectomy went wrong and seeing a 14xx (or pannier) pulling a train on an embankment alongside the road. I was in the Army Cadets in Newent and we used to patrol the disused station area armed to the teeth, I used to be the loader for the Bren Gun. (can't imagine young lads in Army Uniform being able to patrol around town now with real guns).

  9. I have a book called Bostin' Fittle.

This contains all sorts of interesting recipes, including from the Pig, Faggots, Chitterlings and Boney Pie. Rook Pie, Tomato Toast, Gray pays and Grorty Pudding.

Some cracking cakes and puddings Lardy Cake, Crumpets and Pikelets

  10. I have built the office for the weighbridge at Llanfyllin, I was wondering (as this office is near the front of the layout), what would the scales inside look like, I would assume a long Bar type of scales, any ideas what colours, I believe Avery Scales are mainly red, but, not sure if they did weighbridges

  11. I am building a P4 model based on Llanfyllin in Mid Wales. I say based as I have compressed the track plan to fit on a 12ft baseboard.

I currently have track laid on two baseboards, the platforms and station building almost finished. The Signal Box has also been built. I am currently working on a weighbridge, its office and a coal office.

I am working from photos of which there are plenty though I still find new ones.

If you wish to view the work in progress, search for Llanfyllin.

  12. Compared with some other classes, this is a fairly straightforward question

All 58XX were built in a very short period. 5800-5808 in January 1933, 5809 in February and the remainder, 5810-19 in August, so all would have been very similar and all would have carried the GREAT WESTERN lettering on the tanks. You'll need photos to find any that may have been repainted with the shirtbutton from 1934, but my guess would be that few would have had a major repaint before the war. Bunker side steps and roof handrails, and the larger whistle shield, began to be fitted to new 48XX in 1936 but many existing ones did not receive them until ten years later. Again, dated photos of individuals are needed if aiming for a late pre-war date. None of the 58XX were built with auto gear or ATC. ATC was fitted to 5801/3/9-13/5/6/9 in 1936-8. Fitting of top feeds started in 1944. The upper front lamp iron of 5814 was apparently at some time on the smokebox door (no information about when).

All this from the RCTS four-coupled tanks volume.

    Nick

Thanks Nick that is seriously important information, I think I shall have one pre-war and one Post (and never the twain shall meet)

  13. Can I suggest getting hold of a copy of "Peto's Register of Great Western Railway Locomotives - Volume 3". It covers the 14XX and 58XX classes.

Thanks I have found this on Amazon.

The photos of 5806 and 5816 which I have are all post war and they have a top feed, I would like to find out what they looked like pre war, hopefully this book may give me a clue

  14. Hi

I am building the Llanfyllin Branch, which used 58xx, mainly 5806 and 5816. I am converting a Hornby and a Dapol (same really) 14xx into these two locos, which I have converted to P4 using the Ultrascale conversion pack.

I don't seem to be able to find many photos of 58xx, I have the llanfyllin issue of GWRJ and Russells Locos, but there are few clear photos.

How different are they from the 48xx/14xx, just remove the autotrain equipment?

Are there any further photograph options?

    Thanks

  15. A bit of progress...

On the surface not that much, track pinned down and painted underneath.

Test runs have taken place to check it all basically works - it does!

    post-148-12622591716988_thumb.jpg

What can't be seen is the spaghetti underneath, all the points are now wired to a terminal block waiting for the connection to the as yet un-built control panel.

This wiring hasn't been tested yet.....

As to a name, my current thoughts are to call it Mayshill after a place nearby. It did have a railway, although it was a colliery line that closed in 1948. I'm afraid I haven't come up with some meaningful history, but it is just a toy afterall! :D

A Toy! A toy, its a GWR BLT, not a toy, it is a piece of history, a slice of nostalgia, a model of superior engineering. What I mean is it is yours to build and play with! ;) ;)

Have fun, you have overtaken my layout already, I have only laid half the track and am now building a loco and wagons to test it with.

    Happy New Year
