  1. It's the seller that's the idiot then because there's a tickbox to say where you're willing to send, and if you don't want to send outside the US (or wherever) you just untick the relevant boxes.

  2. No, it just confirms the old saying that a fool and his money are easily parted

If it was a load of tatty old rubbish (as is often the case on Ebay, and often featured in this thread at silly prices) then you might have a point, but that's the sort of price that custom paint jobs go for. Honestly I think it's quite a good deal even if perhaps its not something I would be interested in buying myself as it's outside of my area of interest.

  3. Interesting equipment that would definitely do the job but I don't see any prices quoted on their website - which is usually a bad thing, as if you need to know the price there's often a good chance you can't afford it.

Going down the "M8 threaded rod" route, I'm finding them on ebay for just a couple of pounds each so that will probably end up being the option - just need to find a motor.

  4. Interesting. I'm looking at a very small one - about 18" x 8", with two O gauge roads on it that I can have in a hidden area at one end of the layout that will only hold a single car DMU or a loco - to take place of some run round loop points (which otherwise would take up nearly 4ft) so I can move an off scene loco from one track to another - so there will only be two possible positions and one track.

Obviously none of this fancy computer controlled stuff is necessary but what would be the easiest, cheapest way of achieving this automatically? I'm thinking of a simple sort of drive (I have some drawer runners already) and perhaps microswitches to cut it off when it reaches the right position, with an on/off/on switch for me to manually power the motor.

I've already discounted putting some N gauge track underneath it and mounting the traverser on a Farish 37 chassis, and dismantling an old printer... but some Lego 'steering rack' blocks and a slow motor might just do the job?

  5. I know that it's a little after your specific period but I'm guessing nobody does a kit of the TMV milk tank wagons?

When were the tanks as portrayed in the Slaters kits removed from service? The TMV's came in during the early 80's and I remember seeing a rake at Chard Junction which I don't think ever got used before being dragged off for scrap.

  6. Because he fancies himself as some sort of dealer, I suppose. Have a look at his 'other items'. It's all very ordinary and expensive. Branchlines would do a much better deal on some of the narrow gauge stuff.

I'd have thought that part of the criteria of being "some sort of dealer" is that you actually offer 'deals' to your customers, ie save them money off the rrp? If, as you say, everything is very ordinary and expensive, then that's not really quite in the spirit of Ebay, I'd have thought.

I guess part of it is Ebay though, I remember selling some unboxed second hand Peco wagons that were available in any model shop brand new and boxed, and they went for almost twice the price you could have bought them brand new. Fair enough when 'bidding frenzy' takes over and what starts as a bargain (I think they were £1 each to start with) becomes overpriced that's one thing, but to have it at a starting price or BIN of the rrp or thereabouts then you'd really have to be a bit of a muppet to pay over the odds, surely?

  7. Is it bad that I saw something on Ebay that I would quite like, then saw that the seller was someone who has been mentioned negatively on here a number of occasions and am now nervous about putting in a bid...?

  8. I don't know about never making one the same, he shouldn't even do one remotely like it.

Normally I shy away from 'public criticism' of other people's modelling attempts unless it is specifically asked for, particularly if it's not something I have personally tried myself and am not sure I could have made a better job of it.

However, looking at his feedback profile I can't see that any others have been sold, and there isn't anything else 'railway related' amongst his buying or selling history - the last transaction in fact being May 2011. He does list a couple of other similar buildings but as "28mm" - a standard amongst tabletop gamers - and in May he bought a pack of Viking hordemen figures so I would assume that this is his main hobby and the shed is more of an experiment to see if people will buy it.

Such a shed would probably look fine on a 28mm gaming diorama (a minor side interest of mine I would like to develop at some point) but alongside finescale 7mm models, probably not.

  9. A real contender for "please bin it now!"

It's meant to be "Buy It Now" ... but I think you're probably more accurate.

Quite high on the "WTF-ometer" that one. I wonder if it's meant in some vague way to represent something like this?
