  1. I thought I would revive this topic with some photo's for 6205 built from Michael's etch in P4.

I and it will be at scaleforum, Stoke Mandeville, at the end of the month for anyone interested.

    This makes three princesses,

    6205 bellow from Michaels etches,

6203 from an old K's kit

6202 from a Hornby body much altered with the addition of some K's castings

    Next

6200 or 6201, have all the bits ready just waiting for Michael's revised etch.

  2. I too used the brassmasters kit as a basis for mine but chose in the end to use the chassis that canme with the kit.

The extra length 4" equates to 1mm and I thought it not worth the extra effort.

The cab, firebox & boiler on the long wheelbase versions are moved back 4" and the smokebox increased in length by 4".

Also if you use the comet chassis then the Bill bedford rods will be too short (they are for the short wheelbase version) I presume that when he did the etch he assumed that most people would convert a RTR model to achieve the result.

Personally I think people would be hard put to see the difference in wheelbase legth unless there are two versions side by side and then it's only 1mm

the choice is yours of course and good luck whichever route you take.

    over to you horse!

  3. Horestan is right it should be part welded.

Source wild swan pictorial supplement to loco profile No 6 in 1947 LMS livery with BR number

In the profile no 6 in the tender allocation details it is not identified as having anything other than a part-welded tender.

That does not mean it did not happen and really you need a photograph taken during the period that the model is set in

  4. Thanks for all your support Michael

Mine is nearing completion and has been run on the risbough and district club P4 test track, apart from a slight issue on one of the piston rodds, now sorted runs really well.

still to sort out the firbox washout covers then into painting as late 1940's red. After the war so very dirty.

Looking to do another one, one of the first two, so let me know when the revised etch is available

  5. HI

    best of luck

I used two sets of bills valve gear because I wanted forked joints. If you have a selection of spares for valve gear then this may not be reguired.

The biggest issue I found was  trying to keep the valve gear within gauge, it turns out rather wide but then I was workin in P4.

As for the Long wheelbase option, i beleive that Comet? do a long wheelbase version of the CL 5 chassis but as the extra length of  4 inches equates to 1mm in 4mm sscale I chose to ignore it.

    There my cover is blown!!!!!!

With the bits left over (Brassnmasters valve gear) I am now looking at another CL 5 based on a perserference chassis and an old Hornby body. So far removed the cab completely intending to use a comet cab, ready for plastc filling and detailed bits, this will have a self weighing tender. First build so far based on a Comet tender (note has the rivits in the wrong place but I can live with that) based on information on the rmweb. Unfortunately I now see after more research that I have the bunker too long as there needs to be the weighting mechanism behind it.

Will post pictures soon when I get back in the Uk

  6. re the diamond crossings

Are you DCC? If so have you looked at the autoreversing products, digitrax do one that I know of, If I understand the logic (I'm electrical illiterate) when the loco hits the crossing of the polatity os wrong the auto reverser changes the polarity in milliseconds.

Again if this is the case then linking to the points would not be necessary but the diamond crossings would need to be electrically isolated from the points and fed seperately (through the reverser I presume)

Perhaps someone with knowledge can provide a diagram of the setup

  7. During my attempts I have been using various parts of the etch waste to make some of the scratch build bits, I crossed my mind that some of the waste strips could be etched already, for instance

    Sand pie filler support brackets

The extensions at the base of the firebox

Another addition would be to etch the centres of the steam pipes on the smokebox

    Thanks

  8. Information

I have just found on my bookshelf 'The Lizzies' a photographic history of the LMSR  Princess Royal class, by G.W.Goslin and J.E.Conner.

    Published byConner & Butler in 2001. ISBN 0 947699 32 5

Has lots of photos with good captions, many of which I have not seen before.

This has been on my bookshelf for years but only rediscovered yesterday!.

    Other sources

    Stanier Pacifics at Work, A.J.Powel, pub Ian Allen1986, ISBN 0 7110 1534 1

Interesting, but not many photos of Princess Royals

The book of the Princess Royals, Ian Sixsmith, pub British Railways Illustrated Irwell Press 200. ISBN 1 903266 01 7

Some good large format photos in this

The of course there is the Jenkinson & Essary books

LMS locomotives VOl 1 and Vol 5

Last but not least are the wild Swan books

LMS Profile No 4 The Princess Royal Pacifics, ISBN 1 874103 86 0

    Pictorial supplement to the above ISBN 978 1 905084 91 0

Both these have a good selection of photos and drawings.

In split of all this information you still need to get a good photo of the loco in the period you want to model.

For 6205 the texts say that the reversing gear was modified at the same time as the valve gear was converted to have the inside valve gear driven from the outside cylinders.

The photo on page 39 of the profile shows the new valve gear arrangement but still with the original reversing gear set up.

This is what I have modelled but for the period I want, circa 1947 the reversing gear was different. In the above books the straight reversing rod is clear but not the extension forward to the reversing cross shaft.

    Just have to keep looking.

    Hope this helps

  9. Hi Mike

I had to thin the slide bars down from 4 thicknesses of etch to 3 thicknesses. On the next one I will build it with 3 etches from the start. there is no thinning of the connecting rod.

In P4  and with Ultracale wheels there is very little room. I am sure this is not required for 00 but may need to be considered for EM. A lot can depend on the wheels used, Gibson wheels have narrower tyres I think.

I have a number of duchesses in P4, mainly based on Hornby bodies with Comet chassis, cylinder, and valve gear. The comet slide bars are thinner than the Michael Edge Princess etch which are closer to scale.

But then I am a glutton for punishment!!

As a member of the Risborough District Model Railway Club I will bring these along to Railex 2014
