There are 5 or 6 within 100 yards of that on in that bank alone, plus some on the other side.
Can you get in any of them or are they too high up on cliff side

I wouldn't be surprised at all, they were within 9 feet of the surface under the running line at one point at the north end of the station
I knew they were shallow but didn't realise that shallow

All of Grosmont village is seriously undermined. Estate agents tend not to mention that fact.
Those early mines aren't very deep at all any collapse could do some serious surface damage
There are quite a few of the round Grosmont too
Infact it was during the construction of the original tunnel that ironstone was discovered

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with every post there mate.
The situation with the station approach bridge at Goathland isn't new, its been dragging on for years but its very telling that is has been allowed to deteriorate to the point where its unsafe for traffic, a civil engineer friend did point out thought that is the bridge isn't safe for cars then it is questionable about it supporting a crowd getting on and off a train which is worrying. Let's not forge the state of the track in Grosmont tunnel which is the original BR stuff and the engineer won't replace it because he is concerned about the tunnel collapsing, you can also put your hand through the tunnel lining at Grosmont in places.
Pricey basically cleared out the Trust Board several years ago of the folks who actually ran it for years and knew there stuff and replaced most of them with "local business minded people" and look how that turned out!
Your can't just blame John Bailey for all this, Andrew Scott carries just as much, if not more blame. Bearing in mind that not that long ago an interesting amount of money was devoted to a series of ideas that included redoubling Goathland to Levisham, which whilst would have been amazing to a handful of enthusiasts but of dubious advantage to the core business.
The whole ticket thing has been bouncing around for ages, the prebooking thing was massively unpopular and most of the booking clerks walked out because of customer abuse. It was replaced with the same scheme but slightly different, I mean the logic is guaranteed weather proof income, but it absolutely screws people who for example want a single to walk back.
I didn't realise there was a problem with the tunnel but I'm pretty sure there some quite shallow mine workings under it or very close to it. There is a adit near the footbridge over the river

I’ve got him to order a full set of tyres for it just to be safe, the guy I got it off has offered me a couple of replacement partworns which I’ll probably take ‘just incase’ but I’d feel happier with him having 4 decent ones fitted, also booked it in for tracking
That happened with my rover coupe, it had been part of a stored collection and tyres were a make I'd never heard of. Rear tyre blew out at high speed on the A47 at Thorney so I replaced all 5 the next day

That price is ridiculous. As a teenager I worked in the booking offices at Grosmont and Goathland tickets between the two were very popular as it was just right for families to give kids a ride on a steam train . We sold quite a few singles for people who wanted to walk in one direction and use the railway purely as a mode of transport

Nice colour that suits it, hopefully with that mileage pretty good underneath?
It's pretty good, just needs doors really. Everyone loves the colour but I'm not that keen would have preferred red, also would have preferred a mk1

As they had already started withdrawing type 4 hydraulics seemed an odd thing to overhaul a completely non standard loco

Great pictures David
Where is Harlaxton now? Had a spell on the north Norfolk was completely unsuitable for passenger work. I think it was a combination of rock hard buffers and big outside cylinders it used to knock hell out of the train . We actually had passengers throwing up, it was painful to ride behind it. Was worse when it was coasting down hill. I ruined a set of oleo buffers on a 27 when coupled to it

And AIUI the MD655s had been modified to work with generators in such a way that they were not interchangeable with those in the Western fleet.
Which begs the question, was there a spare modified MD655 held by Brush for Falcon or could a serious engine failure (e.g. 'leg out of bed' type) have side-lined the loco at any time?
Was that the engine they put in hawk?

Like this untidy mess! Unusual for me to take photos with workers in it but it was a lucky find unusually very close to my home. https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lmstube/e2a5cca05 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lmstube/e21b3c360

Until very recently there was a ferry tube in Wembley yard. It may still be in there somewhere

The signal might have reverted after the loco passed it? Or could just be the effects of a zoom lens?
Hi Steve, the track circuit block joint is normally a bit further on. Not good practice to run past platform starters even if they are off. It might be an optical illustration.

Some great pictures there David, green 40 in 75
The last on is actually on the down. Has the loco ran past the red?
Unusual for down trains to use platform 1 but you have two pictures of it happening on here

In the very early 1980s there was an occasional flow of tubes using Tubes (STV) which had their side doors removed. I think the wagons were loaded from Round Oak to the Weldless works at Wednesfield Road - on the stub of the Midland Railway route. Can't remember which target number it was but IIRC it was 2x20 when I saw it. I imagine the missing wagon doors allowed stacker trucks to get their tines under the tubes to offload them.
I remember working trains of CODS as some tubes became with doors removed and they were loaded with concrete sleepers

Shame they all went, did some have frames from quite old wagons kev?
-
Am I right in thinking that pipe wagons would be loaded with smaller pipes sometimes ceramic across the wagon and tubes longer ones longwise always metal
Cheers

Took Dom’s MX5 for it’s mot this morning and as suspected it didn’t pass and won’t do without major work being carried out so he’s going to have to scrap it, I didn’t think it would pass when the mot tester poked his thumb through the suspension rail under the bonnet!
the welding and rear calliper, discs and pads would be a good £1000 of work and that before he even thought about the rotten rear arches that are currently covered in duck tape for the MOT!
Dom’s gutted but it’s not like he wasn’t expecting it, just need to find a new car now, he’s had good use out of the MX5 though, he bought it in April last year for £600 and we used it to drive round in practicing until he passed his test in August so he’s had 6 months driving on his own in it and has been to places like Carlisle and Portsmouth a few times in it, we’re going to sell it as spares or repairs on eBay and sell the hard top separately, he certainly won’t be out of pocket by the time they have been sold on, and fair dos to him he always said his first car would be an MX5 and it was!
seen a few interesting replacements about, there’s an NC for £3k at a local farm (which I think is too much) and a bit further up the road is a smart roadster for £2.1k but I don’t know anything about them to know what to look for regards faults or issues
the guy we got the Mazda off (and a few of my previous cars) is getting a mini convertible in tomorrow 10 plate for less than £1k which I think might be worth a look too
That's a shame Jim
You don't want an MGf do you? Absolutely solid but needs mot and has a bit of micro blistering

Interesting set of pictures this morning David. I've recently watched some YouTube videos of the coast line as it is today, amazing how vegetation has grown up on that stretch especially round Sandsend tunnel portal.
It's looking very dodgy inside nowadays especially towards the northern end.
Must be getting on for 30 years since I last walked through it
Nice to see a picture of a disc 31. Very rare nowadays such a shame one has recently been scrapped

Surprised nothing on YouTube about them, mind there are ironstone mines they don't tell you the location but they look more modern than the eskdale mines
