For the record, Mark 2, not 2a, but what great photos, with so much detail to be absorbed. 😊
The ends were actually roof grey, not black, although weathering would have made them appear darker.
This raises another question relevant to my layout did any of the early kk2 FKs in maroon or blue and grey work on the GE section

The Western Region received quite a few Gfye Class 31s with double arrows in 1971/2 - 5617/68/90/92, 5803/12/14/18/23/24/26/27/28/42/43 (from memory). Also 5809 with old emblem. 5668, 5818/27 made it into 1974 still in green but only 5827 managed to acquire its TOPS number, 31294..........for two weeks!
A couple, including 5623, had the double arrow applied centrally between the stripes instead of close up under the top one. 5557/61 received arrows on all four cabsides and bodyside numbers without D prefixes (as above) - I liked this variation and repainted an Airfix model as 5557 more years ago than I care to remember.......😊!
Did 5623 5557 and 61 have these with small panels and later style numbers?

Anyone know which 31s or possibly 30s got double arrows with small yellow panels?
Not sure if any received the twin double arrows

I wish people in high places would stop talking up was as if there is WW3 there would only be one outcome no matter if there is conscription or not.
As this country has massively deindustrialised and closed most air bases it would take many nukes to completely immobilise this country
Anyone living near an American airbase or big city can look forward to vaporisation in an instant away from that look forward to to a slow painful death from radiation sickness and starvation in a world with no power water or medical care as no electrical equipment would work nor would 99.9% of vehicles
I think I'll be having a hearty breakfast or paracetamols in antifreeze that day
Everyone should watch threads before talking WW3 up
Also back in the cold War there were many bunkers for a futile attempt to reestablish civilization, most of these have been derelict for years

Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mick, for correcting the locomotive shed location. I must remember to double check the caption details each time, those supplied are not always right.
Now, this evening, we have four more photo’s to enjoy. They are courtesy of knoxrj, and West Halton Sidings, both on Flickr.
The first one is a view of class C7, 2198, at Hull, in 1936, running light engine.
Next we have a photo’ of class B16/1, 933, near Hessle, on a freight train, in c1934.
The third photo’ shows ex-NER class D19, 1619, at at Botanic Gardens, in c1925. The locomotive is still in NER lined green livery, and what a splendid sight it is.
Finally, we have a photo’ of 50007/50034, at Beverley Station, on a UK Railtours special, by GB Railfreight traction with a DB Cargo crew. The date was the 22nd December, 2022.
Best regards,Rob.
Evening Rob, I hope the B16 is stood still as someone is on the front of it

A thought just occurred to me. Is the pan live when the shoes are on the 3rd rail?

What's annoying me is they are saying blast furnaces are coal fired which they aren't.
Also the woolly mammoth in the room is that electric arc steel is not suitable for the the manufacturer of car body panels
So loosing our steel industry could also lead to the end of the foreign car plants here which also employ thousands
As usual with this lot India benefits again 🤬
I won't comment again as it will become political

It wouldn;t need that as such provided the interlocking and control circuits were unchanged - which was the case. This is a photo, which I took on the same day, of the panel is was being built to replace -
Exactly as it should have been on the Kingswear branch because, for whatever reason, it was not on the list of sections where large wheeled 2-6-2Ts were permitted to assist front a 4-6-0 .
However running bunker first might not necessarily have suited the crew on the assistant engine so maybe they didn't have time to turn it at Kingswear or couldn't get it to he turntable
They'd have been better using zero1 panels, might have looked neater!
Not my favourite railway

Datsun 180. Japanese cars of that era to me were quite strange, They didn't seem to have anything in common with European cars . I know its not but front end grille and lights appeared to be one huge moulding
I'm glad some have survived and loved

Small world as they say. And as you say a great bloke and a true friend. When he passed away I bought a copy of Diesels in the North East as Terry is pictured handing over a token at Crag Hall box in the days when he had hair down his back and looked to be twenty stones.
I knew Terry's mother, a lovely lady called Betty, long before I met Terry. As a young bloke I was, for a while, a production line manager at the old John Collier Tailoring factory in the Boro. Betty was on quality control. Talking in the Ship at Saltburn one evening Terry announces ''Oi you know my mam''! I got to know the family well over the years and when Terry's dad passed away I was given his whistle. To this day it's one of my treasured possessions.
I believe his dad had been an LNER (1930s/40s) guard and maybe worked as Station Master at Mbro. My memory is a little hazy .
Daft story but Terry had a HD 3 rail Sir Nigel Gresley set, boxed and nearly minty. I seem to remmber it was a very early one with the valences and possibly a clockwork body on a leccy chassis. The set was in beautiful condition and Terry, knowing that I'm an old 3 railer would take great pleasure in winding me up by saying '' Do you know I've a mint boxed Dublo A4 set?'' at every opportunity ☺️
I miss him so very much and I'm afraid that I've lost touch with his lovely wife Maureen apart from exchanging Christmas cards.
I've mixed the first names up between Bob ''Farouk'' and Dave but would Dave be ''Dave the Boy''? I Think he started as a book lad at Cargo Fleet, drives huge motor bikes. I've totally lost touch sinve Terry's funeral but if you do see Dave please tell him that Sol ( my nickname) sends his best wishes.
Cheers Rich.
Morning Rich
It's a very small world. I think Terry was more interested in the railway than he used to let on
There is supposed to be a reunion this year, been a while since there was one but Dave used to go so hopefully if we have one he will be there so I will pass on your regards
Cheers Russ

Yes I've just been watching it on telly. Used to go there when the lads were young. Nice article.
One of my best mates was the late Terry Wood. Terry was a signalman at Marske Longbeck and also a Union Rep. I'd occassionally meet up for a beer or two with Terry and couple of the railway men. One Thornaby driver (also deceased) that I recall was Dave AKA ''Farouk'' Quite a character he was. I can recall a couple of his tales but maybe best not on a public forum.!!
Cheers Rich.
Ah bless knew them well. Farouk was Bob Gibson great bloke, he had a mate Dave Atkinson who is still a signalman . Real shock when Terry went, he asked another signalman where I lived as great was going to have a holiday in Sheringham. As I lived there at the time we were going to have a beer but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Great bloke and true railwayman

Hi @russ p
Thanks for posting this. You've prompted some memories mate.
I bought my very first house in Cliffe St. Brotton round about 1974. A two up two down pit cottage for about 2k (them was the days)☺️
The local pub was the Green Tree (Walt and Rene) or just down the bank was the ''Blood Tub'' (Maurice and Domingo)
On sunny summer sundays me and the then missus would wander the old track beds of the pit lines up to Kilton, Lingdale, etc. in the hope of finding any long forgotten artifacts.
Some of the locals in the Green Tree were ex miners and I recall playing dominoes with a few of them. I soon learned not to play them for money!!
Oh I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure you could get 4 pints of Camerons for just under a quid in the Green Tree,!
Who knows but we may have met in the long distant past?
Thanks again , Regards, Rich
I lived in Guisborough, I worked at Thornaby from 83 to 97 regularly working trains through Brotton
I still work into Tees dock quite often
The museum is now land of iron. Just been on look north on an item about 60 years since closure

Thanks for that - I used to go for summer holidays to farming relatives at Stank House Farm near Brotton which is very close by. I remember as a small child roaming around the farm which also included parts of the old Kilton pit...
One of my "to do" retirement list items is a trip up to continue roaming....
Chris H
The area isn't so rural now Chris a relief road was built about 20 years ago between Brotton and Kilton I've been left the area since mid 90s and changed massively

60 years ago today the last ironstone mine in Cleveland closed at North Skelton ending an industry which started the boom in iron and steel making on teesside
This is an interesting video which ends showing what could possibly be the last train leaving the mine with a Thornaby crew on a 25

I got a 101 off ebay the other day, these 100s and 105 came to the area in the late 60s to enable Derby lightweights and 79xxx met camms to be withdrawn.
I have a feeling some came from the LMR so my M prefix set may be prototypical. I've changed the destination blinds
I have a couple of 105s and 4 Derby lightweights . I'm going to sacrifice 2 Derby lightweight vehicles to be part of the withdrawn stock train . A blue one and a gtrren one and run a hybrid set on the layout.
I wish Bachmann or Hornby would do a 4 light 101 in a livery appropriate to 79xxx conversion
I'm really pleased with the additional backscene as it's opened up a lot more photographic opportunities. Wasn't sure if having them either side of the layout would look odd but it seems OK

The end of December 1983 saw the end of crew operation on Eastern Counties services in the Norwich area and 40 years ago this coming Sunday, the Eastern Counties Omnibus Society operated a farewell tour of Norwich using a couple of the then redundant Bristol FLF double deckers.
Four of us travelled up from Ipswich by car to take part, so a few photos from the day are shown below......
They seem from a long gone era but were only 17 years old at the time. Where were the pictures taken ?
