  1. Hello everyone, first time posting on here, hope somebody can help me as I'm not exactly an expert on modelling. My son is a Eurostar fanatic, and for the past couple of months has been asking us for the Hornby Eurostar in the new blue livery for Christmas. As we couldn't find this second hand, and can't afford to buy it brand new, we have bought a used Eurostar in the old grey livery. I am going to paint it blue, but would like to end up without a blotchy mess. What would be the best technique to achieve a smoothish blue finish? Airbrush? Thick paintbrush? Thin paintbrush? Do I need to do anything to prepare the surface first? Please bear in mind that my son is 3 and a half years old, so it doesn't have to be professional standard, but I do want it to look nice for him.

Also, the front window is missing. I've contacted Hornby as they do not have this part listed on their spare parts website, but in case they don't come up with the goods, does anyone know of a model shop that can get hold of bits like this? I've spent the last couple of hours browsing the Internet, but without success. I'm going to go to a craft shop and get a clear piece of plastic to stick in as a temporary measure, but would like to get a proper window as soon as possible.

Hope all of the above makes sense, and I'll really appreciate any answers I get.

Peters spares https://www.petersspares.com/ might have spares and also paints ( https://www.petersspares.com/paintsdyespowders.irc ) if spraying try two light coats allowing to dry before adding the second coat if using enamel paint try a consistency similar to milk ( I have not used acrylic so don't know how thick that should be ) you may also be able to get a colour in a spray can from a car shop like Halfords or motorsave or railmatch paint from howes of oxford

  2. Bit of a disaster today wafting some Humbrol acrylic matt varnish over a model painted with enamels, this photo after I rubbed down the worst with some wet and dry paper:

    attachicon.gifDSCF8727.jpg

The model had three coats of Halfords primers a week or so ago. A coat of grey, some Revell Plasto filler then two coats of white.

Then three days ago I brushed on a top coat of Railmatch "Faded BR Blue" but this came out turquoise so the next day I stirred in some Humbrol enamel matt blue and did another coat, and then a third coat yesterday. This actually looked quite good, really the only thing to detract was my vertical brush marks which looked like brush marks and not the rain staining I had hoped for.

Well ... I have read, you must let enamel paints not just dry but cure as well before overcoating with acrylic ... and clearly the 18 hours I allowed from yesterday to today was not enough. I wonder, what would be a sensible time to wait?

    - Richard.

I don`t know how long to cure paint, but the effect that it has had looks pretty impressive of flaking paint of an old vehicle or structure, it reminds me of some of the stock awaiting restoration on preservation sites

  3. The track gauge is 20 inch and I believe it is very roughly 1/3 scale as you mentioned.

It’s pretty hard to tell due to the unusual track gauge ( quite an interesting story behind that).

If you want any pictures I work at the railway ( on the skytrail @the peasholm end of the line)

    Hi Jamie,

whats the interesting story behind the unusual track ?

  4. Hi Simon

I was watching some YouTuber filming on December 01, 2018 at BNS aka Birmingham Grand Central as it now seems to be called, as appose to Birmingham New Street, and once a day around 3:50pm you get the Cross Country HST with the Mk3 Coaches and [interesting to note that MK3 Buffer Car is always different to the rest of the Standard MK3 Buffer Car Coaches in the sense, there are just Two Windows Blanked Out, on the One Side Only of the coach, so out of the 8 Windows on each side, you get on the Buffer Side (Window1 Seated, Window2 Blanked Out, Window3 Blanked Out, Window4 Seated, Window5 Seated, Window6 Seated, Window7 Seated, Window8 Seated) and on the other Side they are all See through Windows with No Blacked Out Windows, and where the Two Blanked Out Windows are on the Buffet Side of the coach, On the other side, you just get a Narrow High Bar like Table to put Milk & Sugar in your Tea and Coffee]. Sadly Hornby have never released it, so its one of those coaches you need to purchase One normal Cross Country Coach and two Blacking windows for the one side, Just a side point on the Buffet Car Coach, if you are into detailing.

However.... on the YouTube Clip I was watching the Cross Country HST came in and the YouTuber was commenting on the New Door Upgrade and they now have all been modified to New Sliding Doors, which was quiet clear to see and look ok but I did wonder If those coaches were actually the New MK5's.

I say this, based on the Total Cost to Modify Every MK3 Coach from Slam Shut Doors to Sliding Doors with Push Button (Open/Close), and being on MK3's as this guy said, but if the New MK5's are dues out they will be replacing all MK3's or so I would think, so it seems a bit bizarre to go into all that Costing of every MK3 Door Upgrade to then write them off as most MK3's are HST Raked and the HST themselves are also being replaced to. I may be wrong on this and if anyone knows different I would be happy to hear, if the New Mk5 Coaches will be replacing the MK3 Coaches.

    Regards

    Jamie

I am not sure on the recent happenings with mk3s or HSTs but  Scotrail I think has some shortened sets as far as I know which replaced some other stock that has gone to other operators like northern etc.

I dont think HST power cars are compatible with mk1 mk2 mk4 or mk5 stock because of a differing train supply, likewise mk3 HST stock ( not west coast mk3 ) is not compatible with loco hauled stock for the same reason.

So it would probably be cheaper to have power doors on mk3 HST stock than re engineer the train supply on over 190 power cars to a more wide spread train supply which would in turn have to re fit MK3 HST stock to the more wide spread train supply for the remaining mks3s that are not replaced with mk5s if that were to happen.

I dont know the exact details of such stuff but when I was on the railways many years ago that was roughly what we were told ( except the electric doors mk3s and mk5s, the mk5 wasn't thought of and the mk3 were all slam door back then ) .

When the 91s came in on the ECML in the early days the HST DVTs were used for train supply with the MK3 HST stock as well as other reasons such as to save the 91s running round at Leeds or London, but the 89 always had to run round in Intercity days ( I think it was only when GNER used the 89 with MK4s that it didn't need to run round ).

Its all technical stuff and money related, and Im never good with that :)

  5. Hi Simon

Nice updates and I like your Hornby 60090 (Coal Logo), and a good length of MK4's 0to, I notice the new MK5's have been on Test up Edinburgh Waverley, I wonder if they will be in one of the latest 2019 catalogues. I have Bachmann or Oxford rail do them personally if anyone is doing them, they looked very nice to.

    Regards

    Jamie

I hope the mk5 stock will be made too, i would hope they are not too costly though but I don't think many people would have them though, it would probably be a 2021 release lol

  6. I am wanting to put a decoder into my Hornby class 60, is it just a clip fit, or does it have screws somewhere?

    it is a fairly recent release  ( R3266 60090 Quinag ).

On the service sheet, it looks like just 8 clips, four on each side, Is there anything I should know like wires from the chassis to the body or cab or are the 60`s like Bachmann with contacts for the cab and headlight connections.

    Thanks in advance

    Simon

  7. Was there yest.

It was a Sunday but the highlight was a TPE 68 in Platform One  5Z?? arrived on test from Leeds?

When did all the centre road rails get ripped up? - And don't get me going on about the mid to late 70's - still a fine station though.

    Ian

I`m not too sure but think the center roads went when electrification came ( 1989 ish maybe ).
