Thats great, thank you. So they stayed in sequence so any of us modelling TOPS period can use your info provided above and just translate the 4 digit number to 5 digit tops.

    Thanks for your help.

    Not quite....

    D6700 became 37119 (and then 37350)

D6983 was scrapped early so never got a tops number

D6819 did not become 37119 but slotted in at 37283

Has anyone thought about this one?...

    37109

    37109 has a welded roof, so doesn’t work with the latest Accurascale batch of 37026, 37027, 37043 & 37051.

WE REALLY NEED A LIST !!!

So here’s a start point which will be edited as we go along….

This is purely body style from my records which are based around the late 80’s early 90;s hence 37043 is not contained in the main list as it was plated around 1988.

*** Can someone confirm the single / double riveted roof – which batch of engines had this feature? ***

Split box, Riveted roof, Doors, Vulcan built

    37006    37007    37009

    37010    37011    37012    37014    37015    37016    37017    37018

    37021    37022    37023    37026    37027    37028    37029

    37033    37034    37036    37037    37038    37039

    37040    37041    37044    37046    37048    37049

    37050    37051    37052    37054    37055    37056    37057    37059

    37060    37061    37063    37064    37067

The following also fit the bill, but had their doors plated at some stage.

    37008    37013    37019

    37020    37024    37025

    37030    37031    37032    37035

    37042    37043    37045    37047

    37053    37058

    37062    37066    37068

Obviously there are loads of other differences e.g. Headlights, re-numberings, liveries etc. but this will at least give a rough guide to what could be modelled with the Accurascale models.

As always, check photos of you engine. Another useful reference site is https://www.class37.co.uk/

Happy to be corrected on any of this info.

  3. Get a copy of Pip Dunn's "British Rail Main Line Locomotives Specification Guide". You'll find a comprehensive list of all the locos that carried the Stratford Sparrow; and all the other depot emblems. Also includes  detailed info on  liveries all across the history of each class of loco. Detail differences are a hugely complex subject and this book helps to clarify the majority of changes. It was published in 2013 and obviously there have been many changes to the remaining BR fleet since then, but it covers the period from the 60's up to publication in great depth. Highly recommended reference book.

Just called into A+H models in brackley, he’s selling off the last of his British stuff, not for exact prices but ballpark off the top of my head figures

accurascale VTG steels wagon twin packs, 3 left at £45 a pair (that is the price as I bought one pair)

Dapol manors approx £110-115 or sound fitted approx £220

    large prairies £110 approx

Bachmann collectors club ‘Belgian’ class 90, £129 DCC ready or £169 DCC fitted

    Bachmann earl £109

apologies for approx prices but I don’t want to quote an exact price incase I’m  wrong but I’m not far out price wise!

I picked up the Dapol sunshine B4 for £75 (only one though)

dont think they are showing on the website so probably best to call

    This is the place look...

55005 is a case in point, as it is shown to have been a GD loco all of it's life according to BR Database, but then it is shown to be a YK loco for the last 2 years according to spotting books.

I think we have identified the problem.....

BR Database is like a book with a good contents page, but with many of the pages blank or missing.

Napier Chronicles is a far, far more reliable source.

  6. Dapol version is the newest and best. Various liveries available but look for newest as early ones had pick-up issues.

Hornby do a re-vamp of the old Lima one, which was/is a very good moulding for it's time; good option if you're on a budget.

Nice idea but 2mm aluminium isn't that easy to get. Most of the suppliers I have previously used don't go below an 1/8" (3.175mm) It would cost about £1700 for the 224 lengths needed.

Regarding the decks; they are to be 3.6mm ply to save as much weight as possible.

I don't like to knock a man who obviously thinks out of the box, but thin wood and cheap track will not a make good bed fellows.

And a bit of thinking out of the box from me....how about routed grooves in an mdf board and copper tape applied to the sides and a little on the top surface? That would provide the electrical contact you require, over a long distance. You probably need to paint the mdf to provide a good surface for the tape to adhere to.

  8. iL Dottore,

If you go to the chemist in CH, they will supply IPA.

E.Leclerc or Weldom across the border in St. Louis sell something called "Alcool" which is IPA (also available in a lemon scented version!!).

Failing that, drop me a PM and I'll see if I can drop some to you at home.

As  the paint is fresh, it should come off pretty easily.

  9. My father, who passed away in 2019, was a naval officer rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He had a long a varied career in the Navy including getting torpedoed when heading to Russia on a North Atlantic Convoy mission and building Fairey Swordfish aircraft from a kit of parts in various far flung corners of the British Empire.

Some years ago he started a scratch-building a model of the Cutty Sark but never got much further than the hull and decking. It's been sitting in the loft for many years stored in a glass case which he also built to house the finished model. We were hoping that someone might be interested in taking on the task of finishing it, but had no idea how to hit the "target market". So now I've come across this thread and it seems like as good a place as any to try and find a new home for it.

It is currently in Warwickshire (but could possibly be re-located to Berkshire or North Yorkshire ) and if anyone would be interested we be happy to donate it, just pleased that it doesn't have to get thrown away when he put so much time and effort into building it. Drop me a PM if you have any interest. Thanks.

  10. Monk Bar Models have a small sale on with a link on their home page - https://www.monkbarmodelshop.co.uk/

Best bargain by a long way are the EFE PBA Tiger wagons at £34 or £37, quite a bit cheaper than many other retailers (e.g Rails £42). There were about half a dozen in the basket when I was there on Monday, some weathered and some not. So be quick if you want some.

Just out of interest, are production samples sent primarily so punters can see before ordering and production is already ploughing ahead by the time they arrive, or are they sent for the manufacturer to approve production, which therefore only starts after that?

Essentially a production sample is built using the final manufacturing tooling and assembly tooling that would be used in the actual production run. All components will be from final tooling, any electrical items will be from the same bin as the full production run. Any production sample should be “saleable”  - no different than the item that ends up on your local model shop’s shelf. It’s a way of the company checking that they will be getting what they ordered from the supplier and also gives the supplier a chance to fettle any manufacturing issues.

Did anyone else read that and think.....£21K.....is that all ??

I also wonder how many other Wives / SOs etc. are completely oblivious to the size of collections squirrelled away in railway rooms up and down the country?

"I knew he collected trains but I didn't quite know how many he had," she said.

Mrs Batty said she had never set foot inside her husband's collection room, so was taken aback when she finally saw its contents.
