caradis Posted March 18, 2022 Share Posted March 18, 2022 Good Evening, I'm looking for some help identifying a component inside a loco. I recently got an n gauge loco at the recent Glasgow show (Fleischmann 7175, DB 050), and opening it up in preparation for a DCC conversion, i've come across what appears to be a coil of wire with an iron bar through the middle of it. It also looks like it has melted some of the surrounding plastic. What is this component, is it necessary/safe? and is there a modern, safer equivalent. Michael Hodgson Posted March 18, 2022 Share Posted March 18, 2022 It looks like an old-fashioned choke for TV suppression, these were desirable on electric motors to suppress interference on the old VHF TVs. Not really needed now we're on UHF, and you don't need it for DCC, all the electronics you need are in the decoder. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
