terence...the tractor...

Good evening,

I was having a trawl through the KoL images earlier for Chris Higgs and I happened upon a pic that I always liked but it never made it into the final cut.

It was taken on my iPhone, with me balancing dangerously on the edge of our desk in our spare room late one night with only the small directional ceiling mounted spots directed at the layout as it is stored out of use about 2m high on the wall.

I always liked this pic as the light coming in from the right threw some nice rays across the quay and all I have done is drop the image into first 'Irfanview' and then 'Paint' to rotate it square and add in a little colour between the body and the bogies to mask out the pick ups and small steel rods which stuck out.

It's the old Farish body too so I am awaiting Bachmann's 2mm release of 37407 in Large Logo livery so I can reshoot some pics of Kyle to depict the tractor period, however in the meantime I thought I would share this for any tractor fans out there...

Nice shot.

It's got that late afternoon/early evening atmosphere about it on a nice summers day (or at least a dry clear day). The clouds are approaching from over the hills in the background though ;-)

Cheers

Great shot. Nice tinge of colour on the hills, and the sunrays highlighting the nose, very atmospheric.

Many thanks Jeremy, Martin and Alex.

I recall it was first weathering project so hopefully I can do better on the new Farish one once it appears.

My iPhone is the 3GS, so the camera is much improved now on later models I believe...hoping to get the iPhone 5 when work improves...

Lovely Pete, I actually had 417 on a train to Kyle, it was in January 1989 (think) it was raining, and I had, had a sleepless night on the Glasgow QS overnight to Inverness due to a guard, who was determined to check tickets, at every shack. It was the first one out of Inverness, and I can remember getting to Kyle and heading for the cafe at the top of the station ramp, and demolishing two bacon buttys. Happy days!

Lovely shot - one of those where you've got to have a good, hard look to decide if it's a model or the real thing.

Thanks Gary - Now I have a craving for a bacon butty...;)

Nice pic Pete. Station building and the mesh fence look good too.

You live in Spain. Go get some Serrano ham. Probably a better bet over there.

Thanks Andy - Yep, but you can't beat a bacon sandwich with brown sauce...the Spanish just don't get that...

Great photo Pete.

Thanks Don...

I was in Kyle on a couple of occassions around 1976, working for Marconi involved in setting up the torpedo firing range in Raasay Sound. This involved spending days on remote rocky outcrops on the islands with just a theodolite, radio and pack of sandwiches. As winter approached, they bought some workmans huts (aluminium walls and orange plastic roof) to give us some shelter. I think they were delivered on flat wagons, and spent some time on the quayside at Kyle, waiting for transfer to the islands on the RN support ship. They only just fitted on the rubber dinghy used for the last few yards to the islands and were a nightmare to get up on the rocks. They were tied down and weighted with big rocks, but had disappeared by next spring, taken by the wind and waves.

Thanks Ian - that's an interesting piece of information - I guess I am modelling the period after they were removed by the elements... ;)

Definitely needs a seagull or two.

Very atmospheric, as in my other half's favourite retort: "yes, hurry up, it's going to be atmospheric-ing it down in a minute"

Hi Pete,

Should have entered this into the pic competition. I love the way sunlight is coming down from a break in the clouds to illuminate the front of the loco. It really evokes the whole feel of Scotland. Spent a summer up there in my youth and it really was like that. Still can't believe I'm only looking at 2mm scale!!

Hi Mike - Many thanks...I think it looked a bit better on the iPhone as the rays of light were stronger but I didn't want to tweak it too much using software, just straightening a tad and taking out the phospher bronze pick ups to try and lose the model feel...
