RMweb Premium Alex TM Posted December 12, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 12, 2017 Hi again, Tonight seems to be one of those where there are more questions than answers. I've just put up a thread asking aboutYEC locomotive differences, and modelling them. I also wondered about the potential of the soon-to-arrive Heljan Class 07 and it's conversion to the industrial locomotives from the the same manufacturer. Any thoughts on this? As ever, thanks in advance for any guidance. Regards, Alex.
Gordon A
There is a military diesel hydraulic version of the 07 on the Avon Valley Railway outside Bristol. Gordon
pete_mcfarlane
The BR class 07 were the Ruston LSSE class, and were unique. They had electric transmission, hence the E in the class name. The only other Ruston LSSE was a one off 0-4-0 prototype. The various industrial locos were class LSSH, with hydraulic transmission (hence the H). Off the top of my head, the differences were a jackshaft drive for the hydraulic transmission, a lower cab roof, and a different arrangement of bodyside grilles. Here's a Ruston outline drawing of the class: https://www.lincstothepast.com/Ruston-and-Hornsby-Plan--Outline-Arr-of-LSSH-loco/1772048.record?pt=S Some of the class 07 did end up with industrial users after BR finished with them. That might be an easier conversion job.
RMweb Premium Alex TM Posted December 12, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 12, 2017 Hi again, Thanks for those responses; all very helpful. I must admit I hadn't noticed some of the less obvious differences such as the roof height. It looks like one of the ex-BR ones in industrial use may be the more realistic way ahead. regards, Alex. Ruston
I once converted an etched brass 07 kit to an LSSH by fitting the chassis of a Mainline class 03 under it. I never tackled the roof problem though. Depending on how the new RTR model is put together there could be scope for someone to make replacement etches for the cab and bodyside grilles, although I can't see anyone wanting to swap out a brand new chassis for a clunky old Mainline one now, so how to fit new rods and a jackshaft..? RMweb Premium Alex TM Posted December 12, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 12, 2017 Hi, Would the new Bachmann 03 chassis work under the same brass kit, or perhaps the Silver Fox kit with the same chassis? Regards, Alex.
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted December 13, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 13, 2017 (edited) I'm fairly certain the 03 chassis works under the Silver Fox kit. Apparently the LSSH were far more robust and reliable than their diesel electric kin. This pic shows the cab differences well https://www.flickr.com/photos/kev_slade/8646840574/in/photolist-b33PKF-ajEAHw-UNWMeZ-8vhp4i-eb6jsb-a2ndit-Wy7f11-5uYVbE-7G5xRR-rawgJ5-atoA7w-beyAS4-dD12fo-99V4Jx-pM8TYd-UMbbQB-8fd9rq-dMEiYA-AVmbet-c4n575-dEMTCk-9XHAy2-gK2E1T-8fa3XD-dwwdow-gK2mfc-dEMEPg-a3EQMM-c3cPxy-7VY6YT-icZcay-jbvUyZ-pxjXVM-o9knw4-oJH2hH-9PNhK5-8iS3V5-eXrffc-p8GC9Z-c4n6pq-7VXfeV-pu9stS-acV2Aa-dTvc6s-oRtkjY-cdDxHA-nZjqWP-dwhxQ9-nTULfZ-8qTy5L Edited December 13, 2017 by Corbs
RMweb Premium Alex TM Posted December 13, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 13, 2017 Hi again, That photo really does show up some of the differences; thanks for posting the link. Regards, Alex.
