More Vi 47s : 47768

Pretty much what it says on the tin...   My third Vi Trians class 47 arrived in the post this morning, 47768 in RES.   So far I have removed all of the glazing, and then masked off and sprayed the cab windows & doors with some satin black paint. the roof grills have been removed prior to fitting Shawplans grills. As previosuly mentioned I will also be adding the roof pipe that crosses the roof grills (as can be seen in this photo on the left hand side.)   Will edit this to add a photo

Clan Line part 2

Bits for Clan Line have now started to arrive...   First of all there is a nice pack from Comet which contains the front bogie, and a West Country trailing truck. The bogie looks easy enough to build (just need to get round to buying some flux so I can get the soldering iron out!) and it looks like the trailing truck is modifiable once I get some castings for the suspension & axlebox (will be putting a request out in February to anyone going to the Tonbridge show to pick me up a set...)

A first attempt with weathering powders...

Today's modelling has been focused on painting and weathering. I started off trying to get my A3's new wheelsets painted (with the intention of getting that re-wheeled once the Merchant Navy is finished). After painting the first coat of green, I realised that the wheels are missing the ballance weights, so are going to have to be painted again once I manage to find some. Must say I'm a little dissapointed that the wheels didnt come with any, wouldnt exactly have cost much more to put a small

Yet another 47 - Continued

A little more looking at Class 47s today,   One of the plans I have been considering recently is to rebuild the majority of my Heljan class 47 fleet with Vi Trains bodies, while this does involve a lot of work, it does appear to be the most cost effective method given the very low value the Heljan locos currently have (both due to the release of better models, the fact all couplings have been removed, P4 Chassis and finally in some cases a lack of hand rails...   Now I havent yet been able

Or rather 2 of them..... Having come home from Warley with a Vi Trains 47/4 in Large Logo, I've now gone and added a 47/7 in Res to the fleet. (Ontracks have them on offer at ??47!)   Despite the model having not arrived yet, thats not stopped a bit of a research session to work out what I will end up doing with it. I am going to keep it as 47768 'Resonant' So heres a couple of links to prototype photos. A photo Another Photo 47768 working a FGW daytime loco hualed service   The planne

Clan Line - Part 1a

Just a follow up to yesterday's posting on Clan Line. I've now got on and taken some photos of the work so far The new wheelsets   The wheels fitted to the chassis, ballanced using a file weighted down by a class 37 chassis...   The next job is going to be preparing the new thicker sides to the chassis frame. Off to search the net for photos showing Clan Line during its last rebuild, want to see if there is a photo showing its chassis without wheels fitted....

Clan Line - P4ing the Merchant Navy

This project has been on the go for a rather long time...   It started off with the purchase of a Hornby Clan Line body off ebay a couple of years back, the intention to use it along with an etched chassis to model Clan Line in its preserved condition to add a loco to power my VSOE rake. Unfortunately as I found out in the days following buying the body, such a chassis kit didnt exist. A Tender was added about a year later (purchased by mistake for another long term steam project (Tangmere),

Warley 2009

Had a very busy day at Warley today,   First up the shopping list that seems to be a prerequisite of a post Warley forum posting...   As mentioned elsewhere I've been very good this year, with all but ??16 of my spending coming from the cash I brought with me, and the sales of some etches. Those who know me will probably be amazed   First up was the all important rail for my 2010 challenge layout, 2 packs of Exactoscale FB steel rail. I'd like to thank Exactoscale for the exceptional ser

37667 - The work continues....

Had a packet arrive from Hurst this morning with the etches for the sandite port on 37667, and have now set about fitting it.   The etch is a little old fashioned (more of the lets make things idiot proof than the high quality components available today), and is compromised so that everything is on a single etch. The problem with this is that on the prototype there are raised bolt heads on the frame, and the fill is significantly recessed. To rectify this I have carefully cut out the centre of

Wessex Trains 150 pt 3

Sorry for yet another post without photos, starting to think spending on a new camera which is slightly better in the dark might be a sensible idea...   I've been back to work on the 150, this time finally starting the renumber. The old numbers came off very easily with microsol to be replaced with fox transfers (anyone know what the numbering sequence is for the bodyside numbers? I know one half of 150232 is numbered 57232 but I dont know the number for the other half (or is it the same?)

37667 Meldon Quarry

Think think this one was started on the old RMWeb, so a bit of a recap:   The aim is to produce an accurate model of 37667 in its condition from around 2004, starting with a Bachmann 37411 the work involves:   Phase 1: Fitting new buffers using Hornby parts Renumber to 667 and fit Shawplan nameplates Rebuild the headcode boxes with the correct type for the loco, add the brackets above the headcode box, add the large dent at one end and fill the hole from the old ETH socket. More Class 67 stuff

Assambally has started....   And tbh I probably ought to have waited until the morning as the work wasnt quite as tidy as I would have liked. Still its good to see the final etches on the model. I did have a slight problem with some black paint lifting, so I think next time I really must invest in some etch primer!   So far everything has gone to plan with all the components still fitting perfectly, just need to finish the end and roof grill now.....   (on the first photo the glazing dos

Vi Trains 47 to P4

So I have finally given in and brought a Vi Trains class 47:   Going to need a fair bit of work still (need to carefully sand down the intercity logo & stripes then prime and spray the sides/ends GWT Green. I think it also needs to have the marker lights at one end changing to match my chosen prototype. 47813 SS Great Britain in Great Western Trains green. What I am planning to do is mask off the roof/yellow to spray the green (hopefully at the weekend weather permitting), then respray the

Class 67 grills

Well the 'final' version has now arrived, and other than one area in which a grill hasnt etched properly (cant understand why as one slat at the bottom of one has been half etched rather than fully etched) That said I still am unsure if that grill really needs to be replaced as tbh I think the moulded one looks ok in comparason to the prototype (on which you cant see through.   What I intend to do is paint one up and see how it looks...   Everything else is perfect! Production will follow so

More work on that 150...

Pretty much as the title says, a little more work on the 150 (although nothing that really makes for a great photo.....)   The process of renumbering my Regional Railways 150 to 150232 is making a little progress, all of the Bachmann numbers are now removed (using the usual microsol method), the new numbers should be fitted at the weekend once I've picked up the transfers. Will also hopefully get a chance on Friday to test fit some new glazing in it..... Once the glazing is test fitted I can

Improving the Bachmann 150

Another project started (yes I know I havent finished the last one but........)   I mentioned this earlier when I started looking at rewheeling it, but now I've got on with the much more important task of the actual detailing.   As mentioned before the plan here is to cover: Minor chassis improvements (adding extra pipes etc to match that added to the 153) Rebuilding the driving ends chassis to get rid of the large chassis block and over the top AWD drive system, instead going with an u

P4ing the NRM Deltic

Another quick project which has very little use (prototypically at least) for the new layout. I'm back home in devon for a few days, and given the weather isnt good enough to do the painting I had planned I have dug out a quick project to keep me occupied, converting my NRM deltic to P4   I'm going to set about doing this slightly different than usual, this time using Exactoscale 14mm wheels. My reasoning for this is three fold, firstly the wheels were purchased with the intention of fitting t

Research for a charter rake

A chance stumble across an old thread on Demu has revived interest in a project I started planning a while back,   One area that I find quite interesting to operate are charter rakes, the combination of all sorts of different traction with rakes of mixed coaching stock is rather appealing. At the moment I have in progress a full VSOE set (which will have an accurate formation of different coach types, and is more of a long term project). Along with a full Blue Pullman set (Although this still

Some Wagon Modelling: VDA, KIA (and a 150 slips in as well...)

Over the time RMweb has been offline I have been getting on with a couple more wagons:   The first is a Hornby CDA, the intention with this was to get a wagon working reliably enough to be used for track testing on Bodmin, The CDAs I had converted with Exactoscale wheels on the last layout were very unreliable (part due to the finer wheel profile, part due to the awful axle design), as such I've decided to go with Maygibs for the fleet which will hopefully be fitted with etched break disks.

Class 67 Detailing

Resurrecting a topic from the old rmweb,   I've just set about making the final changes to my artwork, and hit the email button to send it off. Looking forward to getting it back and finally being able to finish off my fleet!   Having a serious think at the moment about my choice of locos, with the Hornby EWS management train pack looking incredibly tempting. Just wish they would do it without the name (and include a set of etched plates), as really I want it with the original name......

Modelling Foster Yeoman PTAs

Continuing from my thread on oldRMweb, I have made a little more progress on my rake of Foster Yeoman PTA The underframe ribs are now completed, adding the reinforcements to the outer headstocks and the wider ribs over the bogies. The headstock reinforcement was fabricated with the chopper set to carefully cut along its length to get the two heights (a further small step needed removing from one corner to allow clearance over the packing pieces which support the ribs. Whereas the ribs themsel
