PTAs Part 3

And now it hits a problem.....   Last night I finished the first wagon, adding the 10thou strip to the bottom of the chassis ribs that brings them to their full width. At the same time I also posted on DEMU asking for PTA underframe photos. Phil came to the rescue in the linked topic, however the photos sadly show that I have got things rather wrong.   The prototype should have 2 beams running the length of the wagon, then a gentle angle before the sharp angled pieces at the ends of the rib

More PTAs

I've returned to my improved Lima PTAs this evening, spurred on by a photo showing a rake operating in 1998 (i.e. perfect for the layout!) I've got on with a little more work on this rake.   Not quite as much as I would have liked to do, (given that I've left my 'chopper' back in Bucks, along with most of my evergreen strip.)   The first job was some prep work, this batch of 5 wagons had already been detailed a fair few years back, just not to the standard of the more recent batch of 5 deta

A spot of renumbering

Another spot of renumbering in front of the tv tonight, Started off with my Freightliner 66/6 thats being changed to a 66/5 (very thankful here that the differences are all internal!). The Freightliner 66s are my favourite to work on, while they have 6 numbers to remove, they are all located on flat surfaces (so no repainting needed to repair the scars from removing numbers over the bodyside ribs here!) The Bachmann printing is my favourite of the RTR manufacturers, given that one application

An update on 57008

First of all, apologies if I have taken a photo of the unmodified side.... But its now impossible to see the remains of the old nameplate and I cant remember which side it was........   As mentioned earlier this has previously had the incorrectly placed nameplate removed with Tcut and was then varnished to get rid of the shine. Obliviously prior to doing this I striped down the model removing the lights, cabs and glazing.   While all of this was very easy to remove, it was an absolute swine

Class 59s - A Start on the research

This thread is going to detail the work on my Class 59 fleet, this is split into two periods: locos for 1998 and for 2003. Along with some links to some prototype photos   1998: 59001# - Revised Foster Yeoman http://tcrailwaycollection.fotopic.net/p51427951.html   59004 - Original Foster Yeoman (with pre 98 OHLE flashes) http://tcrailwaycollection.fotopic.net/p51427956.html   59001* - Revised ARC http://seawallthrash.fotopic.net/p1021355.html     59102* - Original ARC pre '98 OHLE

66705 and 57008 Varnishing

Still failing to update the previous post on my 66s with a photo of the remaining locos, but I've been working on 66705 again. As previously mentioned I had noticed that the flag transfer had started to lift, in order to fix this I started by running a thumb nail down each of the grooves to force the transfer back into place before giving the whole loco a coat of matt varnish. On past performance the varnish will now take a couple of days to dry before I can put it back together again. The end r

A Class 66 fleet

A start of a project I have been meaning to get on with for a while now, a sequence of blog posts detailing the stock for the layout starting off with my Class 66s.   The work: Conversion to P4 has been completed using the Bachmann gears with Keen Maygib wheels on the outer axles and black beetle wheels on the centre axles. DCC is either by Lenz Golds, or loksound (although the loksound fitted locos are intended to revert back to golds and have the sound reblown as something a little more i

EPBs

A bit of attention has turned back to my pair of EPBs, a 2EPB and 4EPB (both BR build) from the DC Kit. While neither of them are of use for the layout, having been long since withdrawn, it does give another unit to play with........   the 2 EPB is already half painted in NSE so will have to finish it off and paint the other one in the summer.   The 4 EPB is currently primed awaiting painting, rather than spray in NSE which will be rather hard work to get to a decent standard. I was thinkin

More on Class 73s...

Some Research: Having spent some time suffering fotopic on a day when it seems to not work for more than it works, I've come up with a few links to photos of the stock being modelled.   73109, Battle of Britain in South West Trains, http://martinchealsl.../p56833405.html Not dated (and with the late logo) heres 109 rescuing a stranded Freightliner http://steve-clark.f.../p45510980.html 2002 with a hybrid livery http://johnlawonther.../p36959638.html Tricky loco this one, given it ca

Class 73s

Given the slight change in focus of the layout, Class 73s are suddenly useful again. The plan is to do a rebuild focusing on the chassis for now, rebuild with Bachmann 25 power, full separate underframe, bogie steps. Will fit the old Shawplan roof grills for now at least, and hope for some better parts.   I have one model thats been fitted with etched grills for the side grills, and needs new cantrail grills to replace broken parts. I would like to replace the lot, and probably will if some de

City of Truro to P4

Well its finally arrived...     At the moment I have the model upside down, and assuming that Bachmann havent gone with some odd axle diameter, it looks like the conversion is going to be very straight forward. The break gear will all have to be removed (and will need to be replaced with brass to get it to fit) but other than that it all looks very easy. Not sure what to do with the cranks (I've never brought outside framed wheels for a kettle before, so I assume they come with cranks in

New Years Modelling Resoloutions

I've posted most of this else where on the forum, but figured it deserved padding out into a full blog post, will be interesting to come back to this in 6 months time and see how much is actually done...   My main modelling objective for the new year is to continue to thin down my fleet removing those items which are not fitting in with my plans. This list should hopefully only take me the first half of the year to get through (put unemployment to good use!) though I suspect if I get lucky and

P4ing the prototype Deltic (part 2)

Finally finished fitting new wheels to my Bachmann prototype deltic, As mentioned in my previous posting I have used Exactoscale wheels, giving the combination of looks (given that in essence this is always going to be a display model rather than a layout performer) and gives me a loco which will only run when the track is perfect (in other words its just what the doctor ordered for track testing, as if this will go through it, anything will!)   All that remains to be done is a needs to repl

GWT Barrier coaches 6336 and 6338

Finally got round to making a start on gluing the etches onto my models of the Great Western Trains HST barrier coaches 6336 and 6338 (actually my 2nd model of 6338 as I already have finished one in First Great Western condition.)   Thankfully the GWT version is a little easier than the FGW one as it retains the corridor connections (so at least I dont have to scratch build any more blanking plates for those!)   The first step was removing all the Inter-city logos along with the NEA Tops co

The old layout......

Over the past couple of days while making progress on the design work for my 2010 entry, thoughts have come back a couple of times as to what I will do with Blackcombe Torr.   This was the original track plan. The change focuses around the complete removal of the mainline, along with all of the TPWS gear. The brick bridge on the left hand side would be replaced with a smaller 2 part stone structure (probably half girder half arch). The branchline will be removed either leaving a loco length

47768, 47009, 67006 and 37667

Picked up a bunch of Shawplan bits on Thursday night, and have spent the weekend fitting them.   First up the 47s: both 47709 and 768 are both getting fitted with the new Shawplan roof grills this afternoon, I have also found some Heljan parts to start modifying 709's underframe to have long range fuel tanks. Finding that having tried a couple now I am really getting the hang of fitting the new grills. Certainly the method of applying glue to one half of the etch, fitting in position before a

More on 37667

Having reached the limit of what I can do on Clan Line (at least until the con rods and tender chassis arrive), I've got on with finishing off 37667 'Meldon Quarry' in EWS.   The first job was finishing off the fitting of the sandite port. The etch isnt great, being far to overly simplified at the expense of detail, but I am getting somewhere from it... First the half etched centre was cut out and discarded, then a hole to match was cut into the locos body side. Given the thin brass frame att

Clan Line pt4

A slow morning spent waiting to hear back whether or not my car is fixable (having died on the way out last night.) Turns out that the Alternator has blown so now I'm stuck at home waiting for the RAC to come and fit a new one, most annoying as until they come and call I cant leave the house!   Still, its given a bit more time to work on Clan line.   The first job this morning was a couple of modifications to the front bogie, soldering on a washer to help correct its position. Looks like som

Clan Line - Front Bogie.

Been playing with the soldering iron today, and knocked up the comet kit for the front bogie.   other than a bit of fun trying to laminate the outer frame onto the sub frame all went quite well got a bit of solder to scrape off on one side where it made a bit of a mess, but other than that its gone together nicely. the next job will be weighting it up (planning on filling the underside of it with lead) and tidying up the mounting arm.   I am also thinking that I probably aught to add a sprin

Clan Line pt 3

That's quite enough work on Class 47s for one week......   So now back to Clan Line.   I've spent the evening working on the rear trailing truck, I started off trying to build it with bearings and pinpoint axles. Unfortunately there didn't appear to be enough space between the frames as they splayed out when the wheelset was fitted. Rather than mess about trying to reduce the axle size I took the alternative option with inside bearings instead which seems to have worked ok. Hopefully it wont

The return of 47709

Lots of work on this loco today!   Prototype Photo:     Starting off this morning with priming the yellow ends, followed by 2 coats of Warning yellow. Annoyingly there are still a few areas on the ends that need the yellow touching up (mostly those areas that its difficult to get paint onto), so that will get done tomorrow.   Once the final coat was dry, I then got on with the transfers for the sides. Working with an old set of Fox transfers (picked up in a bargain bucket at the Falmout

Weathering - Attempt number 2......

I touched on this slightly in last nights blog, but I think its probably more deserving to have a post in its own right.   Having picked up a couple of packets of Tamyier weathering 'makeup' type powders yesterday I set about having a play with them on 47768. The idea was to try out 4 different styles which together make up the majority of the weathering I am planning for the moment.   The first was the dark streaks coming down from the roof joints, these took a lot of attempts to get someth

a 47 Respray - 47709 in Fraggonset

This morning was spent working on 47709, which has now been sprayed up in Fraggonset black. other than a few of the usual areas which could do with some minor touching up its gone on pretty well. Once again the masking tape has failed to do its job so the cantrail stripe is going to need to be repainted (along with touching up the paint on one corner of the cab roof).   Now that the paint has dried the next job is going to be preparing the ends to be resprayed. Most annoyingly will have to pr

47768 yet again...

Sorry if your getting bored with this one.... ...But its yet more work on 47768   Transfer work this time, replacing the OHLE flashes with the post 98 type and correcting the blue flashes on the RES logo with the correct colour.   With the OHLE flashes unfortunatly I wasn't able to use my normal method where I remove the red part of the flashes with microsol before adding the new transfers, because the Vi printing just wont shift. Thankfully the printed ones were a bit of the thin side col

47768 - Continued......

I have attached a photo showing 47768 so far, now fitted with most of the details. The plan is to use a different ETH socket as the Vi one isnt great, I have a couple of Bachmann ones at home which I want to have a look at, else there's a bunch of Heljan parts somewhere. Pipework will be added once I've painted the ends (again of course I've forgotten to bring the paints with me.) The tail light surrounds need painting white (again with the paints....) finally I have some Hurst jumper cables t
