About this blog

My N gauge nonsense

Entries in this blog

At last, Boxfile progress - link to the thread.

Hello!   I've created a new thread over in the Boxfile and micro layout section of the forum to show some of the progress I've made on the micro I was thinking about before Christmas. I've picked a Generic Forest of Dean style setting and built it entirely from stuff I had lying around. Please take a look;   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/85024-a-forest-of-dean-layout-in-an-a4-box-file/

Boxfile musings...

Morning all. I haven't posted anything for almost the entire year! Real life gets in the way sometimes I suppose. I still have my inglenook-style baseboard and use it to run my stock, but bar some aborted ballasting I seem to be getting no further than the last photograph I shared.   So in an effort to reignite my mojo, I've been pottering around with some small kits, such as the Ratio coal yard in the pic above. It's got me thinking. One (3 way?) point and a boxfile, and I can try out all tho

Photographic proof of progress!

Well, it's been a while since I've posted anything to this blog. I haven't lost interest, I've carried on collecting and weathering wagons, but there isn't really much to show when they are identical dogfish wagons. I have, however, obtained a dutch Class 37 and more importantly...a baseboard! So here is a dodgy photograph taken from my phone of said 37 doing a bit of shunting of the PW sidings. The layout is basically a long inglenook for shuffling wagons around on - perfect for me, as electron

Tanks a lot

I recently revisited the weathering I had done on a Farish TTA (and was never happy with), and attacked it with some oil paints.   Excuse the rubbish photo, it was too wet to take one outside!

My first bit of weathering for a while...

Well, I haven't posted a blog update for a while. Still no layout, so I have cut back on the stock purchases... austerity and all that! Still, I couldn't resist this Farish SPA wagon I picked up in Modelzone - unfortunately they only had one or I would've picked a couple up! I have wanted a couple since they came out. Could do with some coils to load my OCAs with now though...   Experimented a bit by using some cheap oil paints I got from The Works instead of the usual acrylics to wash some gr

Progress? Loads...

I've not posted in a while, so here are some hoppers on my photo plank I built a month or so ago...     I have added some stock to my collection, although there are only so many pictures of dutch liveried dogfish you can really show off when they look pretty much the same. I've been purchasing each one here and there as funds allow. Anyway, I've now added loads to the hoppers, and the rake is coming along - I am aiming for 8 dogfish and 4 seacows, so 5 and 2 is over 50% finished!     L

The plank!

Well, I haven't posted for a while but I did find time recently to throw together a photo plank for my N gauge stock.   (Click the image for a larger version on my Flikr account)   The idea was to chop up a slice of foam board, glue some track down to it and see what happened, having never done much in the way of scenic work in this scale. I'm relatively pleased with what came out.   (Click the image for a larger version on my Flikr account)   This over view shows its a pretty simple

Sharking

I spent an enjoyable afternoon at the International N Gauge Show on Saturday, and this Shark kit was one of the items I picked up. I decided to go with an olive green example as a bit of variety in my mostly dutch engineers fleet. Its missing transfers and the plough shields seen on the prototype but I am happy with progress so far. The picture is cruel - at least 4 times the size of the real thing!   I also picked up a sample pack from the 2mm association, with the short length of track seen

Nerves of steel

My latest wagon, a Farish BDA with a few acrylic paints a touch of weathering powder slopped on. The stantions are prototypically wonky, honest! As usual the close up photo reveals some parts that need refining - the powders have collected too heavily into some the gaps and need toning down, for a start. Otherwise I'm pretty happy.   It's coupled to one of my OCAs - has anybody had any success in making steel coil loads in the scale?

GWR interlude

LMS Stanier 8F 8274 taking on water at the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Steam Railway, 21//8/11.   Not a lot of modelling done this weekend - however I did spend an enjoyable day at a very sunny GWR today. Highlight being a trip along the new extension in one of the DMUs being used in the Toddington portion - for those that aren't aware, the line was severed into two parts by a landslip last Christmas, which is the focus of a current appeal. The volunteers are doing a marvellous job of k

Don't have a (sea)cow, man.

My latest weathering escapade, one of the brilliant Farish Seacows. The enlargement of the photo is a bit cruel - but after all, this model is only about 3 inches long! I need to touch up the wheels for a start. A very enjoyable evenings work though.

Dogfish days

Well, I haven't posted much on this blog really. Mainly because I haven't had a lot to post! But having cleared out a few surplus 00 models as I continue to switch to N, I treated myself to another Dapol Dogfish ballast wagon, leaving me with a little rake of 3. No progress on any layout so once again they sit on my garden table!

My first building in 'N'...

My first 'N' gauge building, picked up for £2.50 at a flea fair a couple of weeks ago. I had no specific need for it, but at that price I thought it was worth it for the practice of building in this scale - fully expecting to make a hash of it.         Painted again using Games Workshop / Citadel paints. This time I started from a white undercoat, and used thin washes to build up the colour, using a picture from flikr for inspiration. Its probably far from prototypical, and I chickened

Another dirty dogfish and a Cargowaggon

Hello again,   Here are today efforts, both picked up on the cheap at Malvern toyfair. The weather has been rubbish all day so no step by step pictures I'm afraid, but managed to grab a couple of shots of the almost completed models.     First up, a Dapol Cargowaggon. Dirtied up with lots of repeated washes of grime, wiped off after each application. Games Workshop / Citadel acrylics and a touch of Mig powders.       Next up, a second Dapol dogfish, posed with the dutch example from

The beginning of a blog.

Hello all,   My name is Steve and I have just started modelling in N gauge. I never quite got anything done in 00 due to a lack of space, and always had my reservations about N gauge (horrible couplings, chunky wheels etc.) until my friend Lee (Lee M22 on here - have a look at his layout thread) brought a Farish 14 amongst other things round one day. Since then I have picked up the odd wagon and an 08 shunter and I'm hooked.   I am currently planning a small shunting layout, although my aim
