They were bought over 30? years ago and are Mallard/Blacksmith/IKB and Ratio models.

Now that they've reared their ugly head I think it's time they paid a visit to the Carriage Shop and get a final fettling so they can stretch their bogies on a proposed layout!

( as I said once before........don't hold your breath ladies and gentlemen of the parish it may be a little while!)

I do like those, lovely work, but is there any chance of some close-ups of that rather super looking signal box as well, please?!

Lovely models, what we need is a picture with a suitable loco at the head of the train,

I will have to limit the viewing of this GWR stuff as it may result in me dusting off the boxes of stock I have, and god knows where that may lead too

Good evening CK,

Keep your eyes off that box it's not finished yet!! Ha ha

I will oblige soon, I'm in a tussle as to whether I will add some boarding below the windows to suit my new project, hmmmmm

Cheers

Suitable loco ? Hmm....... Now what should I put there ?

I've got some ideas but at the risk of creating a host of suggestions ( please , oh! Ok but be brief and realistic, it'll have to be Edwardian though!)

One suggestion if I may be so bold, get your feather duster out and start with the boxes sooon ! Ya never know, it could become a habit !!

Cheers

I wish I had such delights in boxes tucked away!

I do like the undulating eaves line along the rake - something so often mentioned in reminiscences of the old GWR.

I'm never sure about painting the roofs brown below the rain strips.  I've not noticed it on photographs and wonder where the practice comes from?

If you've got a River or Queen class stashed away, I'd love to see that at the front of that rake!

Hi Wenlock,

Oh! Such delights, now wouldn't that be a sight for sore eyes!

Best I can manage at the moment is an unfinished Barnum, I'll see what can be arranged.

Cheers

Hi Mike,

Thanks, yes seems to set them off, I've seen it in archives in the dim and distant past, it's either deliberate or just muck!

Cheers & happy modelling !

Lovely models.

GWR and Edwardian, what else could anyone ask for?  ;-)

I've got some 4 wheelers in exactly the same condition tucked away in a box somewhere too :-)  And a similar set in 2FS on my workbench right now :-)

Hi Ian,

Thank you, there is something about that era, "La Belle

That's a very nice collection of coaches. I hope you'll find time to finish them off.

There are plenty of works photos showing this feature and a few in service. See, for example, Russell's coaches vol 1, Edwardian Enterprise, etc. There's a good example of a recently painted rake of four-wheelers with this feature at Acton on p145 of Edwardian Enterprise, and a 1907 horsebox that may have it on p157. It appears to have started in the early 1880s and continued into the early 1900s. However, it was far from universal and there are many photos showing overall white roofs both at the works and in service. Many photos where the white lead paint has turned grey show no sign of a difference in shade in this area. I get the impression that it is perhaps more common on stock with only a small gap between the lower rain strip and the cant rail. I don't recall seeing any examples of wider brown strips as in the fourth and last photos above.

I think it is fair to say that it is a feature seen more often on models than on the prototype. I know that I painted all my Ratio coaches this way before I studied prototype photos more closely. Perhaps some of us are also influenced by the re-appearance of this feature on older clerestoreys and four-wheelers after 1927?

I've got some boxes just like those full of models I bought in the late 70s and early 80s, most are unbuilt but I hope to start on them in a year or two. Fantastic looking coaches when built and I have to agree with Wenlock on the choice of locomotives especially the River class, my all time favourite, I nearly got one once but got a Duke instead thinking the newer kit would be around longer, how wrong I was. Still kicking myself now.

Like others I intend to build one sometime.

Great blog and I have enjoyed the read very much.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for looking and you kind words, I'm hoping it might stir a few good

folk to get those cupboards and boxes open again and bring a smile/ memories back and maybe just maybe start/ finish that kit / project hmmmm I wonder ?

If, just if you see a River kit anywhere I would be very interested !

Happy modelling
