Kingsbridge Branch No.1

The Fatadder

The Kingsbridge Branch had two dedicated B Sets, originally E145s but changed to E140s by my period.

The basis of the Model is the old Airfix E140, recently released by Hornby in post war Hawksworth livery. Now I have no evidence as to what livery Kingsbridge No.1 should be modelled in for 1947, however there is a photo in the Model Railway Constructor showing Kingsbridge No.2 in Austerity brown. This will be the next coach project to finish off once I pick up a can of Triumph Russett Brown paint....

By my research there is one B Set which works the vast majority of workings, with the second used for strengthening and for a couple of afternoon workings at which point there are two locos in steam on the branch at the same time. As such the logic is that the more frequently used one is the better condition coach!

The work on the coach its self will have to wait for the moment as it is not a priority until the layout is more complete (particularly as I have a gut feeling that Hornby will retool the model at some point, no doubt just after I finish mine!) It will eventually get the underframe rebuilt, flat buffer beams, improved bogies and the fictional window blocking up.

For now the work consists of sorting out the ends with some Kingsbridge branding, and shifting them out to the Layout Room for use in marking out clearances etc.

The artwork for the transfers was very kindly sent to me by Sierd (Trains and Armour) and is the same artwork that Rob (GWRob) has used on his Brent. This was then sent to Railtec on Thursday, and after some extremely good service got the finished transfers to me today. (which was convenient as the coaches arrived from Rails this morning as well!)

I decided to get two pairs of each transfer made so that If Hornby do end up producing a current spec E140/145 I will have some to use on it.

So here is the coach before and after applying the transfers, a huge difference I think.

The coaches were then renumbered (HMRS transfers) after removing the originals with microsol, (Kingsbridge No.1 was numbered 6958/59, which No2 was numbered 6453/54)

Annoyingly I realised after placing the order for the transfers that I should have got the destination labels for the sides done at the same time, Would these just say Kingsbridge on one side and Brent on the other, or Brent - Kingsbridge)?

Thanks Chris,

In which case I will do one side of the coaches as Brent and the other as Kingsbridge.

Now to find the right font and draw them up

Nice transfers Rich.A touch of authenticity, here's hoping the E140 gets revisited some day.

Rob, let me know if you are interested in some Brent / Kingsbridge B Set destination boards. It's likely to be more cost effective to run some extras off when I eventually send it to Railtech for printing.

Yes please . There's a nice close up of these boards, albeit on the Ashburton branch ,in the Wild Swan book The Great Western in South Devon.

After I posted this I remembered that the Brixham autos had boards showing Brixham on one side of the coach and Churston on the other, because of the configuration of the platforms at those stations.  The same would have applied to Brent and Kingsbridge.

Wonder if it ever led to confusion at the intermediary stations? Avonwick and Loddiswell both had platforms on the same side as Brent, where as Gara Bridge would have shown correctly providing both platforms were used.
