My other ‘other half’...

bcnPete

Morning all,

A quick further update to report that I completed the ply fascia to the second Lack shelf this weekend.

Same process as last time and when the boards were aligned together the two middle ends meet up quite nicely with only a mil or two difference in the top cantilevered fascia. Once its all painted in my standard grey paint finish hopefully it will look the part.

The other good news is despite it being a bit of a 7mm beast in the Matcham household I have found a way to store it so it does not take up a lot more room than when it was just two Lack shelves with some track on. So far, no complaints have been lodged ;)

Next up is the layout lighting and I might return to using the extendable Ikea LED strip lights as I bought a shed load in BCN. Priority after that is to tidy the electrics and secure the wire in tube point/switches in place as the temporary nature of that may be causing sone of the shorts I occasionally get.

A few pics attached.

Whilst I am enjoying this 7mm excursion I do now have a plan in place to replace the two turnouts on Kyle so work on that will make a reappearance towards the last quarter of the year.

As always, comments welcome...

Pete

That's all impressively neat and tidy, and a clever design exercise. If only I could say the same about mine......

That's quite a  magic trick you've done there Pete, no one would know there are Ikea shelves in there!

Taking lots of notes about 7mm in a flat :-)

That looks superb Pete - really coming along nicely now.

As Mikel says, no one would know that it’s built around Ikea shelves!

Almost a shame to paint the wood....

Cheers,

Thanks Mark...not ‘That’s entertainment’ then? ;)I know what you mean but there are a few gaps that need filling and the grey will help focus the eye on the scene...

That looks so smart Pete. The quality and 'neatness' of your work never fails to impress and, as ever, your use of the Ikea shelving is fantastic.

If you don't mind me asking, what size shelf units have you used for this project?

Cheers,

David

Many thanks David - sure, no problem - I tend to use the Ikea Lack 1100 x 260mm shelf units which are a snip at £10!

Overall size of layout is 2200 x 260mm with 50mm projections at rear to cantilever the fascia.

Hope that helps...

Thanks Pete that's great and really helpful. That width seems to just about allow you to squeeze in three parallel tracks which is very useful! The ability to nearly stack/store away must be such a bonus. Wiring and point control must need to be carefully considered at the outset but obviously can be accommodated without a problem

You are welcome David.

The only thing with the Lack shelves is most things need to be surfaced fixed as it can be difficult threading things through the build up. I run wire in tube across the top and keep wiring below, with small rubber feet raising the shelves 10mm and clearing the wires from the table.

Thanks again Pete - that's a clever idea. I had thought of maybe covering with a layer of 5mm foamboard so that slots for point control and wiring could be accomodated but raising the shelf as you suggest is probably a better idea. It's amazing what you can squeeze into 2200mm in O Gauge and I really like the plan you're developing.

No problem David - drop me a PM if you have any other queries.

The 5mm foamboard idea could work but I have had some compression/alignment issues with it before so primarily use it for my mock ups now...

Thanks again Pete, I'm going to do a little more planning but will drop you a line for some further advice in due course if you don't mind. Thanks for being so kind and forthcoming with your help.
