coombe junction - HALT...Who goes there?...

Update - I pose the question as not only was the station identified in 'The Guardian' last year as currently the least used station in the UK but even when it opened in 1901, The Board of Trade cited " The new station at Coombe does not conform to the standard requirements of the Board, which are hardly applicable to the peculiar conditions existing here. Few if any passengers use it...it is necessary because a reversing place is needed...neither booking office nor conveniences are provided...consists of a single platform sufficiently long to accommodate the coaches of the Liskeard and Looe Railway...is to take the place of the existing station at Moorswater" *

In between completing the sparks for board 3 and keen as I am to progress Moorswater dries (big thanks to Mark aka 46444 for taking some detailed photos for me after we arranged a visit with the Site Manager) I have started a little work on Coombe Junction station. The platform has been redone using 'wet and dry' as I like the matt texture, the rebuilt 'architectural prize winning designed' ;) station hut has been primed as a test (I know the colour match is not great, but Spanish Humbrols do not do as they say on the tin  ) and as a trial I tested some MIG weathering powders on the roof of the old warehouse behind. It seems to be patchy in places and I am not sure if that is greasy fingers from before, but I will revisit it.

I realised only recently that the station hut should be in GWR chocolate and cream as per the Signal Cabin was prior to it's removal in 1981. The hut was recently repainted as part of the heritage works to the line...but I confess I am not a big fan of the retro station signs. It does however please me greatly that the line got a reprieve from the Beeching plan, on the grounds of the unsuitable roads in the area.

I attach a few pics - I really need to continue by adding weeds, installing the fences to the lineside walkways and adding lots of trees...but I can feel the pull of Moorswater calling...

That's looking good Pete. Wet 'n' dry does seem to work well in this scale.

It'll be good when you see Sharon just stood loitering next to the platform shelterbiggrin.gif

That is looking good and it could do with a Class 153 there as well just to finish it off nicely!;)

What did you make the hut from by the way?

Just one thing though-you might need copious amounts of trees and plenty of weeds though!!!!!! :D

Looking very nice, as always, Pete. To get rid of those grease stains, would a light coat of sprayed matt varnish and then a re-application of powders do it?

Kris - Thanks...that's enough of that Sharon talk or else I am in deep doo-doo ;)

Mark - Thanks also - Hmmm...you mean a Dapol 121 Bubble...

The hut (my second attempt) has been built from plastikard which was scribed to represent the planks and topped off with a plastic corrugated sheet. I am thinking though of a third attempt using scribed plastic sheeting for the planks.

In terms of the trees and weeds, remember that this is set in 1980 when it was fashionable to prune lineside foilage :P

Looking carefully at the platform, it would appear that the passenger population in the 1980's closely represents that of 1901 :D One of the Dapol 121's would certainly fit the 'need' but I don't think you would require the dummy car...

It's looking fabulous - I just hope I can get even a 10th of your quality in my sceneics (when I eventually get there). Just keep it coming. :clapping_mini:

Looking very nice, I was dissapointed to find, on a trip from Liskeard to Looe last month, that the train did not even reach Coombe... it stopped tantalisingly close by! That said, I would have been more dissapointed if we had tried 'Plan A' which was to increase Coombe's annual passenger figures by 2 by travelling from there! I wonder if they do non timetabled 'pick ups' if you wave frantically at the guard when they arrive?

It all adds to the mystique of the place, like a railway 'Brigadoon' that only appears occasionally to bemused travellers! Really enjoyed the trip none the less B)

I'm tempted to try a similar project using some 2mm Easitrack...

...the description will be a bit long winded, so I will describe it in my blog!

Jon - Thanks - gonna give that a go...

Steve - Many thanks for the kind comments - the forum is a great motivator - I wasn't going to post anything because I had one of those awful nights of modelling, but sleeping on it and looking at it in natural light the next day, I am glad I did so.

Will J - Thanks - Have read your blog and I will keep tabs with interest....

Southernboy - Thankyou - I was going to put only one person on the platform...but I think now I won't...

Mickey - You know that...I know that...but that's not what sells newspapers :P

and this shows CJ when the mill was behind the station...the sign on the side of the hut later gave way to a window (as I have modelled), presumably to give a little natural light and for the occasional passenger(s) to see if the train was coming...

I one of those people who has got off a Liskard to Looe train at Coombe Junction, just becase it is there! In the current timetable only two trains Monday to Saturday call at Coombe Junction and non on Sundays.

The other trains stop just short of the platform, and the gaurd walks to the ground frame, unlocks the facing point lock, changes the point and then relocks the facing point lock and then returns to the train.

The ground frame is unlocked using an annets key, which is attatched to the Liskard to Looe single line staff. The section from Liskard to Coombe Junction is operated in such a way as to allow a train to be locked into Moorshead yard, and the section from Coombe Junction is operated under One Engine in Steam, regulations.

The line certainly is a hot topic at the moment...next, they will be running steam on it again...;)
