Hello :)

Its about time for a quick update. Things havent really gone as well as I would like but I am still getting a few things done...

1. Q1 Revisited.

I never managed to get the Q1 to run well enough the first time around to be totally happy with it, so after finishing the 42/52xx I made a start reworking a few bits.

I 'salvaged' a couple of gears from a tiny servo I had in a box and decided to redo the little reduction box I originally fitted to the engine to lower the driveshaft from the tender. The first one I made never really worked well enough plus it was a straight 1:1 so this time I have added a little 3.5:1 reduction. The above photo shows the gears plus the beginnings of the gearbox machined from a bit of square brass.

This shows the gearbox assembled. The cover is a push fit onto the main body and the black plastic is the socket for the universal joint which is a push fit onto the smaller gears shaft.

This shows the reduction box assembled. It has taken quite a while to get this far believe it or not! I have had lots of trouble with the gears slipping on the shafts which I only finally managed to fix with a little super glue and making some inserts for the gears.

This shows the reduction box fitted onto the Q1s chassis. Its a nice push fit and doesnt require any glue or anything (total fluke!) but I havent tried it with the motor yet, only turning it all by hand.

2. Station Lamps

I was getting cheesed off with the station lamps getting broken all the time because they were bouncing around in a box with other bits so I decided to make a simple carry case for them. Its just a thin piece of card cut out in the shape of the lamps sandwiched between 2 pieces of corrugated card. Nothing special but effective!

A very simple but effective solution to preventing your lamps being damaged! And that gear box is a work of art!

I like the way you say "it has taken quite a while to get this far believe it or not"

I believe it! I doubt I could get that far however long I took. I do like the gearbox we could do with something like that available through the shops.

Keep up the great work Missy

Very nice work Missy - the gearbox is beautiful and I do like the horizontal card slots left to allow the fingers to grasp the lamps (assuming I have interpreted correctly) - Pete

Thanks Guys :)

Work is progressing slowly, recently it has seemed to be one problem after another and its been difficult to keep the confindence together to keep on going. I so desperately need something to go well sooner or later!

Hi Pete :)

You are right. The little slots are so I can get the lamps out easily. I was in two minds wether to post anything about it or not as its nothing special but its little things like that which is so easily overlooked and if it is, its surprising how much of a pain it can be.

Thanks Missy - I am glad you did include it - and very neatly crafted in card it is too...my favourite medium.

Amazing. Very beautiful and wonderfully crafted.I'm having trouble focusing on the webpage, so how you manage this stuff AND have such skill at the same time wold be depressing if it wasn't so inspirational!

Cheers

Hi Missy, that gearbox and chassis would be neat work in 7mm!

Like others above I am completely taken by the lamp post carrying case (first of its kind ever?). I wonder what would happens if you ever tried to take it through an airport security check :D. Seriously though, as you say these are the kinds of details that can be so important, so please do share if you have more of the same kind :) .

Hi Cardboard protection for delicate layout parts is just as important as engineerd gearboxes, exellent work Missy.

Thanks again guys :)

The Q1 is now back together ready for the St Albans show this weekend, I havent tested it yet to see how it works but if anyone would like to see the insides let me know.

Come to think of it, if anyone is there please come and say hello.

Missy :)
