A day out in Derby..

I got the chance today, while I was up visiting friends, to pop over to see the 7mm MR layout under construction at the Silk Mill museum.

Interesting to see bridges and buildings under construction, and the marvellous engines and rolling stock running.

I suppose the layout must be around 60 feet by 15 feet?

These phone pictures can only give an impression of this layout:

Inspirational.

If you want to see it for yourself, bear in mind that the museum closes for TWO YEARS soon, and worse, the future of the model railway is a bit uncertain when it reopens.

Shame that it's closing - it's one of the few museums left that haven't been dumbed down and spoilt. The model railway is very good although I've never seen it running sad.gif

The railway gallery is definitely biased towards the Midland - they seem to have airbrushed the GNR Derbyshire extension out of existence.

If always seem to me that models which can show how things were are not very favoured but odd bits and pieces old coins etc are exciting to the museum people but do not excite the public.

I agree of course, but there seems to be quite a growing awareness of the role the Midland Railway played in the development of Derby as a town/city, so fingers crossed. I suppose that is why the Midland will always dominate things in Derby. It was the biggest employer, with alongside Rolls Royce joinng in later on; whereas the GNR was only really ever just passing through.

I spoke to a numer of people yesterday who felt very strongly about preserving the railway aspect of the museum.
