Tape. Lots of Tape!

Sometimes all the thinking in the world can't compete with a a well timed bodge up  I've been thinking about how to frame the layout for a while now, some of you will remember my BcnPete style sketch from last summer.

After operating Jerry's excellent layout, Highbury Colliery at RailEx, I was convinced a picture frame type arrangement will work very well in this scale. Now time to put concept into practice.

Thanks to Mr Masking Tap and his old friend Double Corrugated I have come up with this rough mock up of a 10" high frame (please ignore the kebab sticks in the corner, the frame will be free standing in practice). To my eye, it could do with coming down a little bit more, but any lower and I will struggle to reach any stock on the rear siding. The plan is to have the back scene permanently fixed to the base board (the cardboard) and the top frame removable with an inbuilt lighting rig (the tape).

Any feedback welcome!

Hey Bryn, that looks a bit neat, I like it.

Im glad its a mock up too, I dont think the tape would last that long in reality! plus what size kebabs to you have there?

How would this work as a curve rather than a right angle?

Looking good Bryn (in a rustic sort of way!)

I think there was another layout at Railex that was displayed in the 'picture frame' style - the Nettlebridge Valley Railway?

The only comment I would make is that the lighting rig might need to project a bit further forward from the layout, otherwise you could get shadows at the front.

Nice work Bryn, takes me back to my Blue Peter days! :D

I've seen this style of framing before and think it would be perfect for Colwyn, let me have a search this week and I may be able to bring up some useful research/ideas on the weekend!

It might look better if the corner at the open end (ie. closest to the camera in the picture above) was curved rather than square.

Are you going for open top or covered?

Happy modelling.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. Some nice ideas.

From the above I am now thinking about a lighting rig which extends a few inches beyond the baseboard and add a radius (6") to the floating corner. Hopefully this will reduce shadows and will be visually easier on the eye.

Kemp - Anything you can dig out will be great. We can then have a indepth, sensible discussion on the issue on Saturday evening. ;)

Out of reach stock? Surely an AWS test magnet could be aquired to rescue said items?

On a serious note, this is going to be a blooming good, well presented layout Bryn!

I'll leave that method for retrieving trailer car side bearer dowels :D

Thanks for ego boost Matt :good:

Thanks for the mention Bryn :D

Like it a lot...What height are you going to set the layout at...as per the above?

That might give some clues as to heights, proportions and viewing cones etc.

1200mm above FFL seems to be a good height for 2FS.

Keep up the great work as its very inspiring.

Anytime Pete, credit where it's due!

A quick measure shows the legs to be at 1300mm, but I might cut them down at a later date. I need to find a comfortable level to operate the fiddle yard at first..... to be honest, I need to build the fiddle yard first!

Mikkel,

What a great find, I've never seen a picture of Mr Nevard's lighting rig before. It is pretty much exactly what I envisage to build. Even the colour is the same!

The only problem I find with standard, front only, letter box views is that it can give a 2 dimensional feel to small and shallow layouts (especially in this scale). I'm hoping with having a 3/4 view it will still give the viewer freedom to roam and look into the layout.

Great idea. Can I suggest that the corner of the baseboard should be curved as well as the lighting frame. With the design aim so that you can change your viewing angle a hard baseboard edge would intrude.

I really like this concept. As I see it, the letter-box view is an under-exploited means of avoiding the traditional birds-eye-view (which I think does little for most layouts).Making the front corner rounded as suggested above sounds like a good idea, eg:http://www.flickr.com/photos/nevardmedia/4014228666/in/set-72157622241440317

Heh that album has pictures of the furtive "You wana see my 00 gauge in the car park" episode at S4um..

I'd missed this earlier, looks good Bryn and I concur with the thoughts on overhanging the lighting and curving things.
