Im back! Has anyone missed me?

Hello :)

OK, so its been ageess and aggeess since my last post and I apologise. It does seem to be normal now for me to stop modelling for a month or so around this time of the year and this year has been no real exception. I havent totally stopped but there hasnt really been anything worth posting recently. I know things will return to normal at some point though.

One thing that hasnt helped is being without any broadband here at home. For some reason my original ISP decided to cut my broadband connection a couple of days after I asked for my MAC code! but now I have a shiny and new BT connection...

Anyway, as I mentioned above there isnt really anything that warrants a post on its own in the way of modelling but there are a couple of things I will mention...

Firstly I have done a little more on Elvis the railcar. I have been slowly working through the bogies for the railcar and have managed to rewheel it to 2mm standards by making my own axles with pinpoint ends to keep the original electrical pickups. I have now moved onto fitting the sideframes but I havent quite figured out how to do it yet! Its certianly making me think for sure...

Secondly I have been dabbling once again with etching and thanks to Pixie I got a prototype narrow gauge chassis etched. I designed it to be soldered together from four layers to reproduce the 'I' beam section which also allows some pockets on each end for couplings. The wheels are held in place with 2mm SA pinpoint bearings and the whole thing went together really well without any problems. I have now tweaked the design a little to make the chassis as small as possible and I hopefully will be getting some more etched soon.

Welcome back. I have certainly missed your modelling skills on these pages. I am looking forward to seeing how your layout and stock are developing!

I had wondered where you had gotten to, along with several others who are still keeping their heads down.

Welcome back - it's been quiet on here without you (not that the rest of us seem to have done much modelling either!)

Nice to see you back in frontline action again, welcome back!

Is the winter modelling season now offically open for business?

I've missed you deeply (except for one day in Aldershot). That narrow gauge chassis makes the track look really big. Oh wait it's peco. haha.

Welcome back Missy - good to see you (and Elvis) at the Farnham show a couple of weeks back and hopefully I'll make Didcot this coming weekend as well.

Well I've missed those posts of yours that keep raising the bar by showing us just what is possible. It was nice to chat to you at Aldershot. I like the narrow gauge chassis are you planning to make a skip body to go on top.

Nice to see Elvis back, and that skip chassis looks wonderful - much more practical and reproducible to layer etches rather than try and crank channel stock.

Do I spot a bit of Märklin track (implying 2mm scale, 6.5mm gauge) underneath?

Thank you guys :)

Kind of, PECO Z Gauge Track.

Yay! Of course we missed you... although it was good to see you in real life at the AGM.

I shared your dilemma over pickups/sideframes for pinpoint pickup based bogies. My solution was to hack the original plastic sideframes around and then glue stuff to them until they bore some resemblence to the real thing, but it's rather a pain to go down that route.

One thing that puzzles me about this form of off-the-shelf chassis is how it works so well. Clearly it does work (and I'm very glad of it), but when you take it apart it seems to have really sloppy clearances everywhere so I really don't understand how it manages to achieve such good results. I suspect that the pinpoint pickup bars are providing pickup, accurate (enough) axle alignment and some degree of suspension travel and that they are therefore the secret to the success of this chassis design. This is probably why I've chickened out (twice) of messing with the pickup bars or the plastic sideframes that hold them in place. I'll be very interested in how you get on.

Regards, Andy

look forward to reading in awe more of your exploits

Welcome back! your batteries have obviously recharged looking at the new etchings and Elvis progress. Do we get 11 months of modelling before the next break?
