Ropley - Riveting

The water tower is now firmly "riveted" together

Hi all.

A small package dropped through the letter box yesterday containing a sheet of Archer Transfers resin rivets. I must hand it to DCC Supplies for some excellent service as I only ordered these on Wednesday, and with the economy postage I wasn't expecting them until the weekend.

The sheet itself is printed with rows of very fine resin dots, representing the rivets, and has a selection of various different sizes spacings. The smallest are just 0.2mm in diameter, and it is these that I have used on the water tower.

Application is just like any waterslide decal. Dip in warm water then slide off onto the model. I cut as close to the 'rivets' as I could to minimize the amount of decal film showing, although it's very very thin, and I think unlikely to show up once the tower is primed. I did give the model a coat of Kleer before applying the rivets to help with adhesion, and once in position some Micro Sol was carefully applied as recommended in the instructions and by others who have used them. Using the Micro Sol allowed the decals to soften enough to apply them to the outer edge of the tank bottom. Having left them to set overnight, they hold up to general handling and the decal film is barely visable, except in certain light conditions.

I have to admit, its quite an expensive sheet of decals relative to its size, but the difference they make is, I feel, pretty impressive, even before painting. I'll certainly be using them again but I'll let you make your own decisions based on the photos. To give some idea of size, the tower is just 5.5cm tall.

And no, I didn't count the rivets!

Cheers,

Tom.

Now that is tasty, you've used them very well.

Those damned clever colonials come up with some splendid ideas.

And Achers keep adding to range

Now that really adds so much to the authenticity of it. For the cost, I'd be happy to offset the price with how good it looks, and it certainly looks the business.

Will you spray it or brush paint it? I would think an airbrush would give you a thinner coat allowing this detail to show through better.

These look great and really transform the model. Nice work.

Thanks! They do add some nice relief detail.

I hadn't seen those before. Certainly alot more for your money, but probably a little on the large side for N/2mm.

Thanks! I'm suprised that there aren't more of this type of product available from other manufacturers, I can think of a few things they'd be useful for!

Thanks Paul. Plan is to give it a coat of primer, then a rust colour before a top coat of light grey applied with an airbrush. I'm looking at using maskol to mask off the rusty patches, of which there are many on the tower at Ropley! After that it'll be weathered.

Cheers,

Tom.

97 rivets... be careful being so sure, Tom will have almost certainly riveted the inside of the tank too...

(which was supposed to be a joke, until I re-checked the top picture and realised that he had......)

Come on Will, you know me ;)

I've only riveted down as far as the top of the water level though. Even I draw the line at rivets you won't be able to see!

Cheers,

Tom.
