absolutely vantastic...

Good evening,

Small update to show progress on some rolling stock.

One of the (many) mistakes made on Kyle was leaving the rolling stock until last minute...03:00am in the morning before the show fitting DG couplings is not my idea of a 'good nights sleep' before an exhibition :nono: So this time I hope to try and tackle rolling stock building, weathering and the fitting of couplings in tandem with the layout build. Famous last words... :D

Whilst I await for a track package to arrive from Shop 1, I was havin' a rummage in the gloat kit box, and found the VDA van kits ordered from TPM earlier this year and thought I may as well start them. As with all Bernard's stuff, not only is it nicely packaged, but the instructions are excellent and the mouldings very crisp needing minimal tidying. The VDA van kit comprises two ends, two sides, a floor plate and a roof that needs to be trimmed to suit and filed down flush afterwards. I am aiming to have a couple in Bauxite and the rest in Railfreight livery and TPM have produced separate mouldings for each in appropriate coloured plastic - that said, I may give them a coat of grey primer anyway as I am guessing the colours are not meant to be exact but more act as a good base to paint (feel free to jump in and correct me if I'm wrong Bernard :))

The kits are designed to fit with a Farish chassis however I have decided to build them on 2mmFS chassis's as there is a 20'9" air braked chassis available from the 2mm Shop...orders having been placed for these too.

The other kit found in said box was a Chivers 4 wheel SR CCT utility van, originally bought for Kyle as apparently a few strayed up North in van trains. I thought this would make a nice addition to the van train and add a bit of interest alongside the BG's and GUV's. Again, this is a very nice kit comprising of two ends (you have a choice of ends to make the PMV as well included in the kit), two sides a base and a roof. This kit includes a chassis and buffers, just requiring wheels and couplings to suit, but once again I will use a 2FS chassis and DG couplings. The only strange thing with this kit was one of the buffers is visibly smaller than the other 3 :O...but I have ordered Oleo's to replace these anyway.

Both kits go together very nicely with minimal flash to clean and I will await until I build a mount the chassis before I post an update on these. In the meanwhile a few pics:

TPM VDA's destined for railfreight livery...roof needs to be filed down as per instructions...

And the ones destined for bauxite livery...ditto the roofs...

Place them together, sprinkle some pixie dust, leave overnight and they increase to 8 vans... :D

The Chivers 4 wheel utility van...awaiting glazing and chassis...

I am now working on some experiments with the track and I hope to post an update on this later this week... ;)

For a while, Paddock Wood received the AB vans with a white-painted roof for chocolate traffic.

And as for the livery on the parcels van, well just bury it in peat for a few years and it'll be close enough.

Something different Pete... nice to see some stock construction ... showing your mastery of this as well as layout design and construction.

I'd best get a move on with mine then ;-)

If I recall correctly also many Transfesa vans passed through always remember the Transvesa wagons loaded with onions sitting in Dover, Roco use to make a very nice 1:160 model if you can find some

Be nice to see someone using the Association 20' 9" underframes, Pete. I'll be interested to see how they turn out.

Ferry vans are the great neglected area of British rolling stock but they would be very appropriate for Paddock Wood.

Hi Pete,

Some nice van bodies coming on there. I bought a couple of these lovely kits a long while back. They have since collected dust in a "bits and bobs" box. You've inspired me to rescue them, clean them up and get them back into traffic.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Thanks Chris - I will look into those...the CCT will of course be BR Blue...underneath the grime...

Thanks Jon - not sure about mastery...the bodies almost fall together...but the chassis's will be interesting...

Thanks Nick - will have a look for those but the size may be a problem - I have an old Roco Ferrywagon...lovely model...but in a rake looks odd...

Thanks David - I hope they don't need too much surgery to fit...soldering chassis etches isn't my strong point. Agreed on the ferrywagon...shame no one makes the 'standard' BR ferrywagon in 2mm...

Hi Jeremy - Thanks also - yes dig em out and have a go...I always liked that Railfreight red/grey livery...a nice rake of them at Par would be the business...

500g bags of dust are available - please PM. Maybe second hand and collected from all the unfinished projects on my work bench. ;-)

Good to see some more of your work Pete, your mojo is certainly in full flow at the moment! Who does the etched chassis for the CCT? I had this on my to-do list!

A ha...thought that might draw you ;) Thanks Steve - I was going to use the 20'9" from shop 2 for this as the centres seem to be the same...although someone might pipe up now and say otherwise...guess it will need some mods though...Hence my recent orders placed today for some BR wagon books...

I think the similarities stop at the wheelbase length sadly - brake gear, W irons, solebars and wheel sizes are all different. To be honest, from what I remember the Chivers chassis wasn't bad - certainly one of the finer plastic ones out there. Perhaps it's worth giving these a go with just some replacement brake shoes and a simple etched inner frame to be it all square?

Ps - if you fancy a challenge, there was also 10 plastic bodied PMVs. I dont think they lasted into your era, but there was at least one clinging onto life in 1971. Odd looking things!

Thanks Steve...I guessed it wasn't going to be straightforward - will have another look at the Chivers chassis tomorrow - good idea, re the mods.

In that case...the layout is set from 1972...he said ducking out of the challenge ;)

Pete -

Don't forget to have a couple of bags of onions under the table for authentic aroma!

When are you coming over??

Looks like it's already been done, and superbly well! Wonder if there are drawings out there....

...no, I must finish everything else first!

Agreed!...a very nice project...next time you are doing some etches...:P

I'll add that on my exhibitor form and see if Chris R the manager delivers :)

When are you coming over??

Ian, I have various small trips planned back to the UK but probably the day before the exhibition and return the day after it...mind you, if the economy doesn't improve here in Spain...I might already be back in the UK come next May :O

Nice vans Pete. I especially like the SR van. I must have missed that one when it was available - an unusual failure for my gloat box purchasing department.

DGs after midnight? I wasn't aware that it was possible to fit DGs at other times of day.

There is a drawing in the Oakwood book on SR Passenger Vans. Darned strange looking things though.

Also a drawing in the Railway Modeller, November1973.

The Chivers CCT/PMV kit is nice, but it's worth replacing the truss rod with wire; easy enough during construction. The kit could also be used to build the 'Night Ferry' brake with a new bit built into the middle.

Worry not...there still available from Roger's son...

Thanks Andy - Clearly I haven't wrestled with as many DG's as you have then...

Thanks Bernard - will also look into the Night Ferry brake option...

I overcome DG "inertia" by building batches of them and keeping them ready assembled. Making DGs is a job for which I find I have to be in the mood for, as it's a bit fiddly getting the loops assembled. I still use a P/B wire loop with a steel tail soldered on. Haven't yet got around to trying a 1 piece steel wire loop & tail.

Mark, hi - yes, I chemically blackened a load of frets recently in preparation for a DG session...which for some reason I seem to keep putting off :D

I used the Chivers chassis as is in part of a trophy winning entry a few years back so it can't be that bad. The body was modified to be representative of an SE&CR van.

I also have issues installing couplings to finish stock.

That's good enough for me...it will be reunited with its upper half shortly :)

Look forward to seeing how the chassis etches for the VDAs come out, as I'm considering replacing the Farish chassis with these on all my stock. I currently have all the van types (VA/C/D types as well as the OAAs).

Me too...I'm looking forward to it...and hoping that it won't be another 8 months gap before they get built either - will post an update once they are done..!

That last photo looks like it could be from the 3D printing and CAD forum.

Interesting observation Rich...I hear what you say...it hasn't even had a coat of grey primer yet either...
