Paul Atterbury will be presenting an illustrated talk on "Britain's Lost Railways" in Thorncombe Village Hall, starting at 7:30p.m. Paul is well-known as a railway author and as the stripey-blazered "expert" on the BBC Antiques Roadshow. Everyone welcome - there's a small charge for non-members. (membership £10 per annum) PM for details, or see: http://sites.google....te/traclubsite/ Advance notice that the April meeting (Wednesday 18th) will feature Richard Hood talking about "The Norfolk & Western Railway". Graham

  14. Well, Peter was his usual ebullient self, keeping the audience entertained with a varied collection of slides & stories. Many of us were also grateful for his seemingly endless supply of chocolate eclairs, given out in exchange for snippets of information! We're looking forward to an equally entertaining, although doubtless very different, presentation next month from Paul Atterbury. Visitors welcome! We're always keen to find new speakers - if any of you have a rail-related talk, slide presentation or what-have-you and are within striking distance of the Axminster/Chard area, please get in touch. There's also an open invitation to anyone who would like to join us - we presently have about 50 members drawn from the area bounded roughly by Sidmouth, Lyme Regis, Bridport, Crewkerne, Taunton & Honiton. Again, please get in touch or see the TRAC website at: http://sites.google.com/site/traclubsite/ Graham

Paul has promised to wear one of his Antiques Roadshow stripey jackets! Graham
  16. Just to clear up any possible confusion, "another cracker" was very much tongue-in-cheek. Personally I think he's made a typo with the price - moving the decimal point one place to the left would bring a bit more sanity! I really don't know how people have the nerve to ask this sort of price. Even more, I don't know how people can possibly be prepared to pay that sort of price. Does anyone really buy them? Graham
  17. Apologies if someone has already posted this, but another cracker from Warwick. http://tinyurl.com/7b99hh6 Uncommon, yes, but he can't be serious, can he? Graham
  18. No, it's definitely a Great Bear. Doesn't look remotely like a giraffe. Graham
  19. Yes, it was said tongue in cheek. Surely you didn't think I was being serious . . . , you didn't, did you? Graham
  20. Here's one that no GWR fan should be without. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-GWR-Great-Western-4-6-2-The-Great-Bear-No-111-Conversion-/180758518771?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item2a160c1bf3
  21. About 30 years ago I built a 3F from an MPD kit and came to exactly that same conclusion regarding the differences in sanding gear between S&D and standard locos. I remember trawling through lots of photographic references at the time. Graham
  22. C'mon, be fair - it does come with a travel box.
  23. I thought the ones to the left looked to be permanently "plumbed in" & hence for storage rather than in traffic. After 45 years I wouldn't be able to remember in any detail, even if I'd taken that much notice at the time! The one to the right obviously was in traffic as it doesn't show in another photo taken from virtually the same spot the previous day. Impossible to say if the two to the left were there on that occasion as they'd be obscured behind D5369 in the BRCW photos above. Graham
  24. The continuing story. I replied with a simple, tongue-in-cheek: <quote> Hmmmm . . . . Not sure that Trading Standards would agree with you on that! <unquote> which must have caused a degree of unintentioned consternation as it generated the following: <quote> Thank you for your comment. By all means please give our listing and contact details to Trading Standards. If they can advise us of the BS or ISO standards that define course and fine scale as absolutes and that to which this Lima track is compliant we will happily change the listing. We can't find anything more than subjective descriptions of the same. The turn outs excluded the track pieces are closer in appearance to Peco finescale than Hornby Mecanno course scale track. However we would welcome guidance from the better informed, or indeed you, should you choose to be helpful in any future communication. If not, we thank you for your time and wait to hear from Trading Standards, although we are doubtful of their interest as we are not seeking to profit from deliberately mis-describing or mis-selling an item - quite the opposite in fact, but thank you again for your concern. -from_fire_and_flames <unquote> Admittedly it would have been easier to follow if "fire_and_flames" had replied in English, but I think the gist is that they don't think much of my questioning their listing! If anyone else would like to join in, please feel free to do so!
