  1. ............ Maybe to make it all tangible it might work to use some case studies? Eg selecting some long-running threads here on RMweb where the different aspects you are after are displayed?

I'll go with that as a good starting point for views about the activity - there are also several other Forums

    for model railway interests

Problem is, "Issues" have no resolution and you can land up with more dissent than agreement.

The Thesis would have to move the body of knowledge with some substantive results from first, a method

    to conduct the inquiry.

Can I suggest a Soft Systems Methodology accumulated by Peter Checkland, Brian Wilson, and many others

over 30 years of research in large concerns, where it was necessary to first get a "Handle" on the problem

    situation, before proceeding.

  2. I don't see the connection between the primary task of modelling coasts, rivers and harbours, to scale down a problem situation for further investigation and research; and that of model railways as an issue based outlet for expression of the real world - only as valid as a landscape or portrait painting.

I think many would direct you to Pendon Museum where model railways are taken seriously and at the highest academic level; to ask about their mission statement, and whether even that measures up to the purposeful activity of, "Modelling coasts, rivers and harbours to scale down a problem situation for further investigation and research". as a primary task.

Reading, you appear to have a messy situation of issues. What tools do you have for knocking it all into something manageable?

  3. "I have received a feedback about your complaint in the mean time, but I am afraid we can't arrange a reprint for this model. Quality of these supported parts were bad because of the design"

In my experience I am with Ian's observation. I too think putting both parts on a sprue rather limited Shapeways options, and that is what they are referring to as "Design".

The set-up charge is for a single STL, not for the number of pieces within it. They only prefer very small parts on a sprue.

  4. Ian,

A jig is already available with a suitable size drill or large size

    piano wire.

While similar, a good method to make chain is to trap the end of

the wire in a drill press chuck with a suitable size drill and hand turn

the chuck with the wire building in along the length of the drill

    - if necessary, supported between the claws of pliers.

    Regards

This project is very interesting to scratch builders.

I see you share the stage with Bill Bedford at Shapeways.

Checking STL files with Netfabb is available free on Cloud(Beta) (http://cloud.netfabb.com/)

With the deposit method of the Reprap system, the current smallest extruder is 0.3mm -

I do not know tolerances that can be achieved with the sintering method from powders.

Some of the corrupt file problem may be this: There is a bug in Java (code) that does not deal correctly

with STL files. The fix is at - (http://www.kwartzlab...rmat-converter/).

Don't ask Kwartzlab questions on how to link it - with their own software, they don't want to know.
