Hello Down_Under, I live in Queensland south of Brisbane and earlier this year I followed up the issue of importing plywood laser cut baseboards from Tim Horn into Oz from the U.K. with the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources and it is my understanding, following the links and advice given in their response, that both plywood and MDF are permitted to be imported into the country under the description of a “Wooden Product”. There is a responsibility for the Manufacturer and/or Supplier to provide details of the product and source materials and the importer to provide this information to the department for review and appropriate authorisation. His old website stated the only country he could not expert to is Australia. I don’t think that is now the correct, although some additional documentation may be necessary to be able to export to Oz.   3. Thanks to all for your assistance. Tried standing a chassis submerged in a bath of acetone, taking all necessary safety precautions, for 24 hours but did not touch whatever adhesive has been used. They do not appear to be soldered so may have to resort to more “physical” methods and make good thereafter. RN
  4. I have recently acquired some partially assembled white metal Geen tank wagon kits that have sustained some damage to their chassis. The previous construction appears to have been made with cyano. To try and sort out the problems, I would like to separate the assembled chassis’ back to component parts but am unsure how to do this without causing further irretrievable damage to the castings. Therefore I am seeking advice from RMWebers as to how best to tackle this. Thanks in advance. RN

  8. Thanks for the info Jonathan on availability of Cambrian Kits, it would appear that I’ve done them an injustice for which I apologise. Being in the Antipodes, I always used to order directly from the source. I don’t want to detract from what is a great thread by Tom, it’s already increased the sales of ‘The Bala Branch’ by one.
  9. Really do not understand what is happening with Cambrian Kits. If their intention is to build stocks up to be able to despatch orders by return, then looking at what is available on their website, this would seem far from the case as an awful lot of items are out of stock and have been for some time. Some of these I would have thought are / were good sellers and the Herring was a relatively new mould. Ho hum, hopefully not another Coopercraft, Ian Kirk style loss of rolling stock!
  10. Whilst looking into paint ranges available down here, the "LIFECOLOUR" range is also readily available from model shops. It's a good quality acrylic range with plenty of colours, including specific 6 pot sets for British railway use as well as military and aviation themes. Whist investigating paint charts, I can recommend the "iModelKit" free app and the upgrade to the full version.
  11. As you know, I'm following you (at some distance) through the recreation of Clare in model form and you are setting a high benchmark. As you say, having the track formation/alignments plotted straight onto a good flat, stable base pays dividends for accurate placement and alignment. It all looks spot on and very tidy.   12. Thank you for your input on the brick front (facade?). I think my error was to use imperial brick dimensions that were consistently found in an attempt to 'standardise' matters. In doing so, I failed to cross check back the metric conversion. If I had, I would have seen that this is the current standard metric brick size. Going back to the trade reclaimer sites, there are still variables so without going and measuring one of the station bricks, a fair return trip from Oz, I'm going to use a brick size of 9" x 4 1/2" x 3 1/2". I found this in a Tendring DC document for renovators, this council area being relatively local to my planned station. On with the rework!! RN

I have started to prepare a CAD drawing of a GER 1865 station building using a Great Eastern Railway Society 4mm scale drawing of Takeleyas a guide which I can confirm has been printed out to scale. Using photos of my chosen prototype and of the recently restored Takeley station buildings, following the time honoured 'brick counting' method of obtaining dimensions, I am getting a discrepancy between my CAD drawing dimensions and measured dimensions from the Takely drawing. From Internet searches, the consistent measurements for a standard Victorian imperial brick, LxWxH, are 8 1/2" x 4" x 2 1/2" (equating to 215mm x 102.5 x 65mm). The standard mortar joint being 3/8" (10mm). Scaling all of these dimensions to 4mm/ft, I obtain a brick size of 2.823mm x 1.345mm x 0.853mm and mortar joint of 0.131mm. As the buildings are constructed in Flemmish Bond, the Stretcher will be 2.822 x 0.853mm, a Header is 1.345 x 0.853mm and a Queen Closer is 0.673 (+/-) x 0.853mm. By my reckoning, a course of bricks will be 0.984mm high with a vertical joint of 0.131mm between bricks. As I have a discrepancy between my scaled drawing and a scale drawing, my question is whether my brick size interpretations are similar to measurements used by you guys when preparing your drawings for laser engraving and cutting or have I missed a key 'factor' in my workings?   14. You're making me very envious of your progress. Are there many of these Community facilities in the UK where the public can access new technology tools - laser cutters, CNC tools, 3D printers etc for a membership fee or is Cambridge simply rather more enlightened? A great idea none the less. I have have had a quick look for something similar here in Oz but nothing immediately jumps out in the Brisbane area. Others may be able to enlighten me though.....
