  1. Conserved Very little is "preserved", even the NRM is poor at preservation which suggests the artifact should remain in or be returned to an as used or as built condition. Paul

  3. OK put me out of my misery what the h... is a RRNE ? Please remember this is a forum for amateurs interested in railways, not for professional railway people. Paul
  4. Lichen grew very rapidly on the stone topping of our newly built garden walls. As a Biologist I was surprised just how quickly they established because I had been taught how slowly they are supposed to grow - and this is not in some remote wilderness area but a few hundred metres from York Station, with the York avoider rather closer. On topic, even new slates have some texture, just a little rub over with a glass fibre pen would have given some relief to the roof as modelled. I do agree that it is easy to overdo some aspects of weathering, but as a photographer for well over 50 years I am surprised how quickly some items weather. Paul
  5. Oh how we laughed down the club at the article about slate roofing. How perfect was that, should have used Slaters plastic, at least that has a bit of texture. I had a brand new slate roof on my house 26 years ago and it looked nothing like that neatness! Slates break, mould, slip especially in our damp climate when we do get the occasional very high winds. Paul
  6. ... and finally but not least Lowfell - chosen by the Chairman Finally, our sponsors Monk Bar Models. They organised and paid for the very attractive souvenir programme and flyers to advertise the show. Paul
  7. Wow, we had a great weekend. Really inspires that small local shows are the future for this hobby! Fortunately we hadn't filled the hall up too much because we were very busy on Saturday morning with queuing for the 2nd hand shop. It filled a store room. Lots of photos at https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/exhibition2024 The York Mayor and Mayoress opened the show and visited every exhibitor. They were very enthusiastic. They stayed for 2 hours and the Mayor returned briefly on Sunday! By the way, the Mayoress's chain of office may look very modern, but is believed to be 4 - 500 years old. And here are the cup winners. Stamford East N gauge The public choice layout Badgers Bottom voted by the members of the Ebor Group Paul
  8. That has been explained at some stage in all of this. Some complex technical issues. Similarly why the 68s cannot be muffled/silenced BUT it is the reason the North East finally got shut of them. Waking people at 4 O'clock in the mornings at new stabling points in Scarborough and York (and probably elsewhere) - so no good arguing locals knew what they were getting when they purchased nearby properties. Or, our very important wagon chat group 😇 couldn't hear ourselves think when sat soberly ! in The Tap on York station. Paul
  9. We have been told that the a drawing calls them doors. There is no louvre. I've always thought they were for observing a load - the more recent (!) GRAINS have a small windows in the ends https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brgrainrivetcgorivet/e1915caf6 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brgraincgo/ee7e0ed8 I don't deny they may have been for ventilation, but they were open spaces and not louvred. https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lnercoveredmerchandise/e2b04183a https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lnercoveredmerchandise/e30ea5ba4 Paul
  10. But these aren't shuttered. As we have been told, they are a door. Paul

  12. I have given the numbers of the J container flats on https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brferryfreightliner/e365ee9d2 Simply a conventional 27ft freightliner container. If you look at Roger Silsburys's chapter in your copy of Michael Collins Life and times series Freightliner you will see there were a couple of hundred of these. Apparently later converted to C containers https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brfreightlinercontainer/e39d1570e https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brfreightlinercontainer/e2942c7c0 Paul
  13. I thought I had an official photo of this, but apparently not - probably lost in the Fotopic debacle. Anyway, simple enough lift up, pull the lever and the two bottom flats open. By the way I would be surprised if they weren't used for cement. I thought they were like the H container, partially at least designed to go to a building site and to dump a load at the site where it would be used in quantity. Perhaps overtaken by the rapid introduction of ready mix concrete from bulk silos serviced by Presflos. 1954 onwards. Reverting to O3 ZSVs. There was much more variety used than Conflat Ls, simply plain Conflat As, but when we went to York to measure the unique BR Scottish Cables tank wagon we also found the frames from demountable tank wagons https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brdemountable/e32058387 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brdemountable/e2e0c027b Paul

  19. Setting up well underway. The 2nd hand shop is packed with goodies. Monk Bar models and George Books will have small sales stands. As always a very good tombola is organised and York Against Cancer have delivered a good selection of food and non alcoholic drinks. If you come along please sit down and have a tea and cake, YAC gain all of that. Thanks as always to Monk Bar models for supporting us, including paying for the full colour souvenir programme. It will all be a lot tidier by 10.00 on Saturday when the Lord Mayor arrives. Paul

  22. Why is there an assumption these are fruit vans and not simple standard vanfits? At that distance it is difficult to see the small side vents which would distinguish them as Fruit vans. No sign of larger Fruit Ds etc. https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brfruitvan When I took a rake of vans in Moreton in 1978 they were all standard Vanfits. Paul
