  1. Bulleid 64'- 6" long BTK/BSK No. S 4365 S pictured, once formed part of 6 - car Bournemouth Dining Set No. 298. As built, they featured the weight saving single 30" dia. 'Prestall' vacuum cylinder, centrally placed on the u/f to operate the brakes on both bogies. In service, these proved to need nigher maintenance than the trusted twin brake gear set-up. The result of this led, in the mid 50's, to the conversion of coaches so singularly fitted, to twin, diagonally opposed, sets. These are distinguished by having the outer Vee hanger outside of the Truss angle.
  2. Agreed, but if you look at my 1983 drawings in the Ian Allan MRC Planbook No.1, you'll see that they are in the correct position, i.e. behind the truss angle.
  3. According to my memory. Firstly, the obvious, being born in 1943, I have no memory of pre-war colours. Of the richer coloured greens of the 'Southern's post-war years', I do. If you're looking for post-WW2, LHCS / EMU S.R. Malachite*, then, none of these jog. If you're looking for post-1956 B.R.(S) LHCS / EMU Green, then, maybe No.6 with a bluer tint, or a glossy No.8**. The remainder would look better adorning a WW2 Allied fighting aircraft / vehicle and / or G.W.R. Loco / B.R. Loco / DMU. * Phoenix Paints are producing / have produced, over the years, one pre-WW2 S.R. Malachite Green, and three post-war variants, S.R.LHCS Malachite, S.R. EMU (Electric) Green and the post 1956 B.R.(S) Green colour. Having tried and tested all of these, the head-scratching continues. ** Passenger coach sides are, in the majority of cases, always the shiniest part of any everyday UK railway train. Why not model / paint them as such ?

  5. Both 'bags' (Vac / Steam pipes) should be crossed-over (L to R & R to L) to be 'absolutely' correct. P.S. Many thanks for your informative pics. Nice ones Rob.
  6. Hello Chris. Some of my drawings were included in that book, and in the 'Constuctor' magazine previously. I took it upon myself to draw them (Pen and ink in those days) to 4mm. / 1ft. so there wouldn't need to be any re-scaling. All the best, Frank
  7. Hi Mallard60022. What I attempted to make clear was that these initial Bulleid ,1945/6 built, multi-door 59 footers (CK Diag. No.2316 & BTK Diag. No.2121 had the same sized windows (Corridor main-lights, Quarter-lights and toilets) as the later, 1946 built 64' - 6" long , multi-door coaches (CK Diag. No. 2317 & BTK Diag. No.2122). These have nothing to do with the later 64' - 6" long, S.R. or B.R.(S) built, deeper windowed stock, as some contributors seem to think. The only window sizes that come close are those of the B.R.C.W.W (Contractor) built coaches and, of course, Bulleid's own E.M.U. stock.
  8. A snippet from the S.R. GA drawing showing the body side panel sizes. Note the Amendment 3. It reads 'AMD.3 Re-arrangement Of Side Panels Owing To Reduction In Sizes Of Sheets Obtainable'. Austerity, or what
  9. The question of the Bulleid's multi-door stock windows' having differing depths is a complete misnomer. Picture in Mike King's 'Southern Vans and Coaches in Colour', Noodle Books 2015, ISBN 978-1-909328-24-2. Page 81, Plate 111, shows compartment side of 64' - 6" long multi-door ex-CK No.5729 with beading between four of the compartments. All the windows are at the same depth in relation to the bottom of the doors' drop-lights and the same as the un-horizontally beaded 59' BTK on the previous page 80, Plate 110. One thing that stands out though is the position of the horizontal beading on the longer coach. It is lower. Half way between the rubber door stops and the door handles.
  10. It appears (to my eyes at least) that in the early pictures, including the 'official' S.R. pics of these coaches, the hand rails are duller (wood ?). When pictured in B.R. Green the hand rails appear shiny (chrome). In the early years possibly due to post war austerity. Later upgraded when funds became available.
  11. Smaller windows because of the beading ?? *. This is the first time I've heard of this ! Also the outer Vee hangers are still shown as being outside the truss angles. They were inside, as shown below. * P.S. Edit. Compare the depth of the windows in both this pic and that of Hornby's. https://www.Hornby.com/uk-en/shop/wagons-coaches/passenger-coaches/sr-bulleid-59-coaches.html In both pics the level of the windows' bottom edge is the same in comparison with that of the doors. Also the doors' stops are mounted on the beading when this is in the horizon position.

  13. Hmmmm. About half an hour ago I had been looking at peanuts' 'holiday home' topic. When I tried to return to the forum, the mouse cursor disappeared and I was unable to anything other than pressing Ctl/Alt/Delete. This had no effect, so I had to resort to pressing off the PC power(button) and turning off the Router. When turning both back on I was confronted by a blank screen and the only sound (of life ?) being the PC's cooling fans. As a last hope, I pulled out the PC's power feed, waited a couple of minutes, then reconnected, turned on and tuned in. At last, signs of life. I've run a McAfee Anti-Virus / Spyware scan. Nothing's shown up. The funny thing is, 1/4 hour prior to this, and again yesterday (and the day before iIrc) a sound alert... Bleeper ?..Blooper ? went off at this end, but with no message attached. Hmmmm.
  14. Downwards ?. Looks to me as if you're going skywards. ....(Thinks)....Probably ground bound in a few seconds or so, tho'.
  15. 63' - 6" Over Body Corners......64' - 6" Over Body Ends, same as BR Std. Mk.1s, to be precise and/or pedantic.

I'd've been happy with 'Freddie', after today's news.
  17. These handrails, in Trevor's pic, look 'bright' enough to be chrome, as do those shown in Mike King's 'Illustrated History of Southern Coaches', Plates 139 (64'-6" BTK No.2882, SR livery), 141 (59' BTK No.S 2853 S, BR(S) Green livery) and Plate 142 (59' CK No.S 5715 S, BR(S) Green livery with Cream / Yellow 1st.class stripe). In the official SR photo, Plate 138, (CK No.5726, SR livery) the brightness of the handrails appears somewhat muted, more akin to it's Maunsell forebears, despite being photographed under direct lighting / bright sunlight.

AFAIR 'Archie' was the call sign for Anti-aircraft fire. Can't remember which Allied Command (RAF Fighter, Bomber, Coastal, USAAF) used it though.
  20. Cheers Andy... BBC, eh ?......hmmm.... Not my first choice for news ?? these days, I'm sorry to say. Especially with South Today's Paul Clifton in front of the camera.

  22. Word on the grapevine suggested that four 442 units should've entered revenue earning service this past Monday, 08/04/19. There appears to be some sort of delay.
