jhb171achil
That's the first model I've seen of that type of loco. It looks impressive (the model, not the locos, which weren't). You could have it pull a couple of coaches in NIR maroon "steam" livery at a pinch, as well as doing some shunting and engineering turns. They lurked at York Road most of their lives, it seemed to me. Three baby GM types would have been much more useful, but at that time NIR was pretty well wedded to BR type thinking, and and BR had plenty of DMUs for branch and lightly loaded trains.. Does anyone know if the DH class actually operated any passenger trains - I think not, but I did hear stories of a railtour planned.. Colm I'm late coming to this post - apologies. One was tested with a passenger train to Carrickferus, as the plan was to use them in stoping trains when necessary but only York Road - Carrickfergus, as their top speed was only about 30 mph, if that! The test was not deemed to be a success and as you say, they spent much of their lives out of use and sitting about at York Road. Ballast trains were to become their staple diet for the rest of their shortish lives!

pat141
The loco's look great running slow, which does make it better to see as they pass by. i like the station and footbridge.

kirley
Kirley Junction Rumours. Two lines suspended and the PW Team have arrived at the cutting. To add to the rumours the Breakdown Crane has travelled down from Inchicore and has quietly slipped into the local Yard. Rumours confirmed. Sunday morning and a piece of local history disappear. Protests from the Glenderg Buildings Preservation Group were to no avail. Major rail disruption announced for the next 3 months.
pat141
Your lucky the crane was there to lift that big bridge in one piece. Nice.
colmflanagan
Looks like your permanent way teams will be busy for a while! Colm
colmflanagan
Only on the Markethill branch..... I seem to recall seeing somewhere that their "official" max speed was 45 but that was still of little use for passenger trains. Colm
kirley
Realignment I have decided to remove the Helix, I rarely use it but the layout was designed around it. Many compromises to track curves were made to facilitate the helix resulting in inclines and tight curves. It could end up with the whole layout being redesigned but I hope will result in smoother fault free running. This piece of track shows the intended position of the realigned track. This is the difficult bit, areas that took weeks to construct are gone with an hour of demolition.
kirley
Kirley Junction Track Realignment Helix finally removed. After removing the Helix I was able to drop the track bed down, the difference being the grey area between the ground and the background. Clearing the approaches to the Helix. Deforestation. Major subsidence at Shaneoguestown Farm, the ground level has dropped the height of the house. That’s the first phase of the demolition completed, track leveled from Shaneoguestown Farm, past Castletown (at the Helix) and down the ‘Gully’. Using a cardboard template to realign the track. 4

kirley
Testing the crossovers on the new section of track, still a bit if fine tuning to do.
kirley
The center section to be lowered. All the layout now on one level. Lifting bridge re-positioned. Construction of the Kirley Junction Station area completed. I marked out the platform area by scribing paving stones on the MDF. Once I get the scenics applied should soften up the look.
Glover
You've been (suspiciously) quiet Kirley...... That's some project. In my limited experience, changing an existing layout is much more difficult; the pre-planning needs to be very exact and there is always the danger of collateral damage. Best of luck with it. kirley
Thanks Glover, I'm afraid I don't do pre-planning, it's all done on the layout. Some scenics added today.
