Jack Burnard, a founder member and President of Sunderland & District Model Railway Society died suddenly on 24th February 2016 in his 80th year.

Jack was a very well known modeller who was born, bred and lived all his life in the Houghton le Spring area of County Durham, he was a surveyor by occupation. This made him very good at assessing what was correct in scenic modelling.  Over the years Jack modelled in many scales from N gauge (as a garden railway on an O gauge layout) through OO and O gauges up to G scale. He built many layouts and was particularly known for his contribution to 2 of the Keighley O Gauge Groups layouts Ravensbeck and Runswick Bay, he later moved up to G scale and with his friend Maurice Bramley and built several layouts the last of which was “Beamish Colliery”. Jack had recently returned to OO gauge and his latest layout was almost complete at the time of his death. Jack co-authored the book Model Railway Planning and Design and had many articles printed in the model press. Over the years Jack has exhibited layouts at exhibitions all over England and Wales and further afield on the continent and will be greatly missed by many. We pass our condolences to Jack’s wife Vera, son Richard, daughter Hilary and all his grandchildren.

Jack will be a great miss at the club. On a Monday night he was in his element if he could get paint on his hands, with two layouts being worked on at the same time he was a God send at times.

A very sad day for us all.

Very sad to hear this news. A regular contributor and visitor to York Model Railway Show over many years.

He will be sadly missed, not least for the late night banter in the Newington.

Condolences from the York team to his family.

A great man, a real Gentleman and always ready with a story or two.

I will miss Jack tremendously as we always had a bit of a talk and laugh whenever we met.   He had a lot of railway knowledged from observing the world and the way railways fit into it and was always helpful in every way.

As an example of Jacks none railway knowledge we were at a show in Bremen. No idea where to get food or drink when we spotted Jack and Maurice setting off across a car park.. follow them! .. yes we ended up in a nice sports club with excellent food and drink.

A great man and a sad loss.

It was always a highlight to chat to Jack at an exhibition. I shall miss his sense of humour and easy going gentlemanly manner. He exhibited many times at the MRC shows; please pass on our condolences from The Model Railway Club.

Some years ago we were billeted together in the same digs at Spalding and remember a great evening in the bar with Jack and his fellow operators.

I was lucky enough to come into contact with him at several exhibitions and fortunate enough to share a drink or two with him on a few occasions with his partner in crime Maurice Bramley with hilarious results

RIP Jack you will be missed
