Things are going the right way, tonight the old NCL depot track and point were salvaged after soaking the area with water to loosen the PVA and ballast. The 2 "new" lengths of siding have had their respective power feeds attached and the further (carriage siding) has been pinned into place. The NCL depot and MacBraynes depot are plonked roughly where I anticipate them going.20220405_232305.jpg.8c92a46430d42eee632318a1a11d2d5f.jpg

The roadway / footpath along the dock edge will need removing and the new ends of the sidings (where the point was removed) need attention, before building a new road surface, and figuring how this will interact with the yard trackage in places.

As some may have seen elsewhere, various Hornby class 25 conversions are nearing completion too (some to 24s), and these will all be suitably local prototypes for use on Crinan.

Slow progress due to prognosticating, but things are going the right way. More track in the goods yard has been removed in order for realignment and relaying is now underway, which means some alteration of features around the Quay area.

Will post some photos up soon which will hopefully give a better idea.

Slow progress with still much deliberation, mainly regarding the possible repositioning of the NCL depot. The entire Quay frontage from the Custom House to the Lighthouse has been removed, a loop siding added (as this made shunting easier and more flexible in the previous incarnation) with another siding yet to be added.

The loose yard of track in the left foreground is just one of 2 or 3 options and the Provender store is just plonked temporarily, but with the NCL depot moved up towards the Custom House it opens out this end of the yard area - the thinking being that an access road can skirt it and run right along the dock edge (possibly with disused track embedded - being the front edge of the layout, I don't want rolling stock to be vulnerable to being knocked off the layout), whilst giving more space for trackside unloading, a small coal yard, harbour detritus etc at this end.

Much useful discussion was had with the guys at the Club last night regarding the various options and some ideas hatched which may or may not make the final cut....

Needless to say, nothing is final until it is glued down. As there are no exhibition invitations currently I'm not having to rush things; equally this isn't encouraging rapid progress either so a mixed blessing really......

Thanks for looking,

Martyn.

The new ballast has had a blow over with sleeper grime to blend it in, card roadways have also been added along the quayside, ready for painting, and the Macbraynes Depot is being bedded into position.

Para Handy would be birlin' in his grave at the thought of young lassies being on a puffer!😄.

You should rearrange the figures to replicate the "bow, I'm flying" scene from Titanic!

Any planned outings of Crinan to exhibitions this year? I really enjoyed seeing it at York a few years back.

Thanks! Crinan will be at Rainhill show on 2nd & 3rd March, hopefully with further outings later this year (watch this space).

He probably would Jim! As the layout is set around 1970 though, this vessel was in use for group trips, before it's stint in use for filming Para Handy. The irony is that the real thing is undergoing restoration at Crinan Boat Yard today.

Taken from "National Historic Ships UK":

AULD REEKIE was built in 1943 as VIC 27 for the Admiralty. Her builders were Isaac Pimblott & Sons Limited of Northwich and she was powered by a steam compound engine  built by Crabtree (1931) Limited. She is of iron/steel riveted construction.

In 1945 she supported a barrage balloon on the River Scheldt in the Netherlands

Sold out of service by the Admiralty to Sir James Miller in 1968 and registered as AULD REEKIE in 1969, her use then was for the Land Sea and Air Youth Club Limited. In 1979 she was sold to Bathgate Brothers and used in the TV series Para Handy. Subsequently, she passed through two owners and is presently under restoration at Crinan Boatyard.

Unexpectedly I had a free day today, giving me a choice of visiting Preston or Rainhill exhibitions.  I chose the latter because I wanted to see Crinan and because I had never been to the St Helens Museum of Transport.

Crinan was excellent, better than the photos on here and the revised quayside superb. Very friendly show too.

In the morning I took the free vintage bus to the St Helens museum, that was far better than expected.  As well as the expected buses (two of which I had learnt to drive on) there were smaller displays throughout the museum which were well worth reading.

Glad you had a good day Colin, thankyou for your kind comments also. The Transport Museum is still on my to do list I must admit!

..  to top it all we took the "Best layout in show" award

That's marvellous Martyn!

I am yet to see Crinan, may our paths cross one of these days.

Cheers,

Brian
