Why was the A300 on the grass?

Because the level of the taxi-way was below the level of the tops of the grass leaves, and coupled with zoom lens fore-shortening it gives a false impression.

Couple of weeks back the new Bombardier C series was testing into LCY , on the Saturday me and my colleague were given a guided tour of the test aircraft by the test crew , very interesting it was too and a very impressive aircraft it is .

It then flew non stop to JFK with a simulated load of 40 passengers, it really looks like a game changer for airports like LCY with most of the east coast of the USA reachable as well as middle east .

On one of its early visits, a Wardair 747 put its wing tip through the terminal building window.

Sorry jonny777 but I think the Spantax aircraft is a Convair 990 , they were one of the last operators of the type in the world and there are still some stored at Palma in a terrible state.

They are identifiable from a distance by the carrot shaped fairings on top of the wings , I believe they were called "Whitcomb fairings" and were to assist the wing aerodynamically at higher speed.

Interesting .i think BA have just binned this route with their A318.

If this thing can take 40 to JFK what sort of wedge would they have to pay to make it profitable I wonder ?

"Carrot" is exactly right - the other name for them (generally in the U.K.) was "Küchemann carrots" after their inventor.

I hope they haven't binned it yet , I'm the engineering support for it !!!!

Seriously though your right the other dedicated A318 has just been leased to Titan. How long they keep operating the other aircraft is anyone's guess , we've heard nothing except the BA1/2 is operating for the foreseeable future.

As for the cost , it's usually around the £3500-£4000 return fare , sometimes more others less .

It's a lovely little service though with a really cosy exclusive feel to it and many passengers are regulars known by name. Be a shame to see it go .

Never know IAG may order new C series for revamp ........

Hitchinloco , yes please keep them coming! I served my apprenticeship at Britannia from 1988 so I love seeing these kind of Luton photos.

We used to carry out maintenance on those Air Ops TriStars at Marshall's in Cambridge, let's just say they had had a hard life , glad I was just a fitter at the time and not certifying.

After the Wardair 'incident', their weekly 747 was relegated to Stand 23 out of harms way.

Great photos !!! Brought a tear to my eye , first live aircraft I ever worked on was a Britannia 737-200combi g-axnb I think , strange one fitted with large upper fuse cargo door.

I can also remember the ex Orion 737-300 s the only ones in the Brits fleet .

I liked the Boeing 767 in the air Holland / air Aruba colours when it went on lease , something a bit different.

Cheers for those ....

The Court Line Tristars pics might trigger a few unpleasant memories among anyone who lost out when they went bust so spectacularly, as did a school pal of mine who was about to depart for Luton en route to Majorca I think it was when the news of the airlines demise reached them.
