Renaming the Hornby Castle

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

After a long absence I am hoping to get back into railway modelling with some small projects. One of these is to rename/renumber a Hornby Castle (5011 'Tintagel Castle').

I'm looking at 5012 'Berry Pomeroy Castle', 5008 'Raglan Castle', or 5007 'Rougemont Castle'. Can anybody tell me whether 'Tintagel Castle' could/could not become one of these?

Finally, what would be my best option for removing the bufferbeam number? I'm aware this has been asked before, but I've done some experimenting - Microsol was ineffective, and methylated spirits removed the red paint while leaving the numerals intact! I presume I need white spirits or some kind of specialised decal remover?

Thanks in advance,

Sam.

I can't remember from memory when the front end design changed, so if no one has answered by the time I get home in a couple of hours I will look it up.

Edit: just looked and I think it's a perfect match, both gained the 4000gl tender in 1929 if that makes any difference to you

As for renunbering, I used a combination of microsol and a curved blade scalpel. (Having now renumbered 2 castles, 2 granges and 2 Kings with this method). I apply the microsol and leave it for about a minute (topping up if it starts to dry), then try rubbing off and if it won't shift gently scrape with the scalpel.

I have recently used IPA instead of microsol, it's a little more potent (I use 70% strength), it still sometimes needs the scraping, but does the job.

For the names I use Modelmasters plates, cutting away the splasher and then flying in position on the model before cutting away any remenants of the Hornby name plate.

Be cautious with IPA - I used when renumbering a Bachmann 08 and it had a greater effect on the paint than it did on the numbers.

Definitely

The 100% stuff is a very good paint stripper. I generally start by watering my 70%stuff further, however on Hornby paint it wouldn't shift until I started using straight from the bottle

For Bachmann it's a different story, microsol working perfectly every time for me (but even that can strip through to the body on a thick complicated logo such as a BR crest). As such I've never felt the need to try IPA on it

The front end [Vauxhall] changed from 5012 onwards so the two [5007/8] of the three mentioned would be ok,incidently,I kept mine as 5011.

Thanks all for your advice! I have now settled on 5008 'Raglan Castle'* and ordered plates - hopefully all will go well...

* a choice which may or may not have been settled by a nice photo of 5008 on the 'Home Trainer' at Swindon...

5008 was an Old Oak allocated loco for most of her GWR life . Here's a front end shot.

Like the backscene gwrrob.  Is that a photo enlarged?  Do tell please.

Howard, its a bespoke backscene made from a collection of photos stitched together by Art Printers, the guys who make the ID range.

Microsol is a transfer softening soloution (designed to soften transfers in order that they sit better over raises detail such as rivets and bodyside ribs. Available from good model shops or Amazon (or direct from the USA)

IPA is isopropyl alcohol, available from chemists or Amazon, presumably also available in Australia. It was used as an antiseptic, but is also used by beauticians for something to do with nails. It's also a good cleaner for electrical connections
