John_Miles
I think the train may just have come down from the old Midland line. The tank looks very much like one of the Imperial Smelting ones that carried sulphuric acid from Llansamlet and Avonmouth. The sheeted opens possibly carried zinc ingots; there were some purpose-built wagons for this as well, based on a prototype using a 21t fitted mineral chassis, with an open-framed body. The tipplers/minerals were probably from BSC Landore and Morriston coal depot. The coke wagons were probably carrying coke for export, or perhaps to the Smelter; the only other user of quantities of coke that far west was BSC Landore, which only used a few 21t Minerals full each week. John_Miles
Imperial Smelting also had these. They dealt in some really strong chemicals. Also there is a picture of a further Imperial Smelting wagon in that excellent book on the Swansea Vale written by Miles, Thomas and Watkins Edited October 27, 2017 by John_Miles
RMweb Gold Richard_A Posted October 28, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 28, 2017 I've got that book so shall have another read. After the hydraulics were withdrawn, I know that the western region was given some class 25's and class 31's, were these seen in and around Swansea? I've got a few Bradford Barton books which show class 25's in Cardiff, so it's not beyond imagination to see them in Swansea, but I'm not sure on the 31's. I know this is later than 1970,but I'll probably be flexible in timescale like most people.

br2975
Did 33s ever make it to Swansea. They were common in Cardiff on the main line to and from Portsmouth and Crewe and I remember seeing one go north through Queen Street. Not until the 1980s when they had cyclic diagrams which would bring Eastleigh 33s to West Wales, North Wales and back to the south coast. . In the early 70s they just worked summer dated Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff workings. . usually returning from cardiff within an hour or so. . I have the details of those workings at home, if anyone is interested. . There had also been an oil working to Tidal Sidings that once brought a Cl.33 to the Cardiff area in the very late 60s. . This seems to have been succeeded by a ThO Fawley - Grangetown tank working, which arrived around 03:30 on a Friday morning. I wonder if this was Cl.33 hauled ? and if it conveyed fuel for Canton TMD, as well as tanks for the Ferry Road branch ? . RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted November 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 23, 2017 I 'learned the road' over the Vale of Glamorgan line by travelling with 6090, a week on days with a very friendly, knowledgeable, and informative Barry traincrew. I signed Jersey Marine-Aberthaw, which I never ever visited again, at the end of the week! At the time, the N & B route ran at the back of Pensycynor Bird Gardens, a local tourist attraction and eventually a small zoo, now long closed, which had lost an ostrich; we were instructed to keep a lookout for it and inform control if we'd spotted it. This led to a week long game of us putting in reports of seeing all sorts fauna; lions, wildebeeste, pterodactyls, a martian cow with 3 legs and 16 udders, anything we could come up with. But no ostrich (it was IIRC, eventually run to ground in a local woodland and dartgunned into submission. People were told not to approach it; apparently they have a vicious kick!). I doubt this sort of behaviour would be tolerated these days, but there was scope for a bit of fun then.

The former is available, the latter could be converted from a Boplate.
