It certainly is Jim and there’s one module nearing build for the second of those stations you did :)

This one is a 90° corner and will have the working postbus too ;)

Thanks to Alan in the US getting interested in a designing challenge and Mike my mate with a printer there are now 14 outer wall sections ready!
I hand painted the surrounds but sprayed the frames using a thin plastic mask I made up :)

Taken the opportunity to sort out the programming on the dcc equipped fleet. Decided putting a mark underneath so I know which is Forward too so there’s some chance they all end up the same way round.

Ah but the turntable you say! I think if this goes out as a modular layout one day I’ll block the reverse polarity end of the table with a pin so they stay the same way round ;)

This is looking superb. I wonder if anyone has contemplated( as I am) modelling this kind of scene the other way round, ie the viewing side is through the back of the roundhouse, no back wall of course. And the turntable and adjacent outside lines become the fiddle yard. I am sure someone must have tried it. I would not contemplate it in this scale but it could work for HO or larger

A couple have done it in O with a UP roundhouse, Laramie , and a UK one based on Barrow Hill. As a display they are nice and compact but not so much fun at a two day show ;) I like the flexibility of the exterior view as it works as a display and as part of a larger layout :)

Now that you mention it I have seen Laramie before. That is really big locomotives in a small space! It still has the turntable on the viewing side, nice video by the way. My thought was to have just the inside of the roundhouse in view. No need to worry about the spiders web catenary above the turntable.  It would certainly work in O gauge, with lots of lovely in shed detail.

Just the cost of the locos in Om ;)

Thanks for this great thread Paul, I am just starting with the Kato N gauge stuff , deciding that although I love my Bemo RhB stock, its just too big a scale (and expensive) for what space I have spare. Now that Kato are expanding there range more and other company's are getting in on the act. What close couplers are you useing and where did you get them from.

Cheers Steve.......

I’m using the Kato clip together ones they come with now in the coach sets with microtrains on either end and on both ends of locos and freight wagons. There’s some pics of fitting them on p3 & 4 of this thread. I get them from the States in bulk every now and again as it works out cheaper and much easier than finding them here.
Here are some of fitting the Ge4/4iii and the same applies to the ii

I use the 2004 on locos and the 1017 on stock

Whats a 'reverse draft angle' when its at home?

That looks quite reversible, I might consider giving them a whirl, next time you plan on ordering from the states please let me kno and I might ask you to add a set of each type onto the order and have a play myself.

Well if MDS or Kato produce more temptation I probably will. I’ve got a few left as spares that should cover the stuff due in January but don’t need more until more goodies are announced  ;)

I know some use their Z scale couplers as they are smaller but I find these ok and get reliable remote uncoupling.

Here’s a doodle in 3D.

I’m always looking at getting the most in a small space and double decking a layout obviously provides that and is well suited to the gradients possible with my RhB & HSB modelling. In the US ‘mushroom’ layouts are a concept where the decks are stacked but viewed from different sides often with different floor levels. The ‘mushroom’ does away with the visual compromise of two decks in the same view, they also can raise the floor level for the upper deck to keep a comfortable height.

So I’d been musing if I could partially use a mushroom concept to stack the stations to reduce the width of the layout at the stations saving about 8 inches width. I can’t have dual floor levels but I thought I’d mock it up to see how and if it could work.

I’ve added a basic track plan to give an idea. Deck separation is 6 inches.

BonsaiRhB double deck

Mocked up in foam. Obviously the top deck wiring will need to be carried on top and hidden and I’d use led strip light tape to light the lower deck.

Top deck is 10in wide with a 4in box girder frame and the lower deck 8in wide.

It’s not perfect for scenic viewing but would work operationally. As I’m using my current module height of 3ft4in (1m) off the floor it’s the compromise I’m stuck with but it would work easily if raised another foot in height.

I've probably asked this elsewhere and before , but what magnets do you use to get the reliable remote uncoupling?

I’ve used the big Kadee 308’s on hinged flaps under the track. You can cut them in half as they are a rubber type material but you have to be very careful where you stop. If I get it right I cut the holes before tracklaying and cover them with very thin plastic so the magnet is right under the sleepers

Cobalt

You can see the thin plasticard, thinnest you can find, under the track on my HOm here

HOm Harz

When I retrofitted the larger magnets to Lulworth I used a block so I cut 8mm into the 9mm ply using my easycut

Lulworth kadee magnets

literally leaving just the top laminate

Hi Paul, Ive been looking at the "Mushroom mockup" and I wonder what the radius is that you have for elevation change?

It’s the 150mm naughty one but it’s ok as that’s my Bonsai modules ;)
