hayfield
I take the pragmatic approach in 4 mm scale, simply because it cannot be easily seen. I do have 2 sets of Scalefour filing jigs (1-5 to 1-12) which makes life very easy, once filed I do splice one side into the other, which is visible In 7 mm scale I taper one side of the rail over about an inch, then bend it straight, then file the angle of the crossing, I do like wise for the second rail, then file a slight rebate in the first rail to let in the second. Again not much of this work is visible at normal viewing distances, but in my opinion I think you can see the difference looking close up. I have no issues if anyone wants to do things certain ways even if it cannot be seen, but modellers should not feel pressurised into doing things which others may consider un-necessary. The main aim is getting something which works and looks right
Lacathedrale
I tried to taper the 'opposite' side of the rail and bend it straight in 2mm, but I just couldn't reliably straighten them out!

Will code 55 FB rail fit in the 2FS jigs? Nope, I tried exactly that.
