NScaleNotes
Hello all Shapeways recommends cleaning prints (high detail plastic) with acetone. I've asked around all the local DIY stores and supposedly no one can source pure acetone! Locally the purest I can find is nail-polish remover (99% acetone) with added Bitrex. Anyone have any experience using similar non-pure acetone? Wondered if the Bitrex or any other additives would leave a residue? Probably worrying too much but don't want to waste money ordering something specialist if it isn't necessary. Simon
peach james
Local paint store? Fiberglass store? Someone must carry it "local" to you- I mean, I get that it is used for various things which are a bit unsavory, but it's a fairly basic industrial chemical. alfsboy
I get mine from the local chemist.

DavidB-AU
Try a beauty store. They often have pure acetone for removing acrylic nails. The nail polish remover you can get at a pharmacy usually has other stuff in it. Cheers David
decauville1126
https://darrantchemicals.co.uk/all-products/acetone I buy acetone, mek, and isopropanol from them in 5 litre containers. Makes a nonsense of buying little bottles! But consider storage as they are flammable (very!)
RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted January 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 8, 2019 It is worth saying hat not all nail polish remover is acetone. I agree with the sources for getting it though. Cheapest is probably Ebay, but beware some supplies are diluted to 70% - probably still works, but you pay transportation of water. James You'd think, I used to buy acetone (and all kinds of 'dangerous' chemicals) off the shelf of the local hardware store when I lived in the States but not here in the UK
NScaleNotes
I get mine from the local chemist. Hmmm, tried them already and they said they didn't/couldn't sell it. Bear in mind this is also the chemist that told me I needed a prescription to order a drug that I brought in Boots the next day. I really try to keep my business local but when things like this happen you do wonder why bother. Try a beauty store. They often have pure acetone for removing acrylic nails. The nail polish remover you can get at a pharmacy usually has other stuff in it. Cheers David Hadn't thought of that. I might just give that a go. Thanks. NScaleNotes
Thanks to everyone that responded. Seems like it's best to try and source pure acetone. I was trying to keep my business local but may have to resort to Ebay if I can't turn any up locally. Simon

Simon Find a local fiberglass supplier , they’ll have loads , you can get remanufactured acetone very cheaply Note that it’s common to have it diluted outside of laboratory grade acetone , it’s makes little difference for the application you need it for
