Does it really take 12 months to get all the way down there?

Typo error....
Been away a few days - devoid of broadband - in a Bothy.
I shall delete this topic (2018) later today, Sunday.

Why has Railway Modeller got out of sync with the calendar? It's not even half way through January and here we are discussing the February magazine.

The January issue contained Christmas greetings for goodness sake.

What's wrong with issuing the magazine on or around the 1st of each month?

You might be interested in some American magazines. Ours seem to come out 2/3 weeks ahead to the ‘cover month’, theirs seem to get as much as 6 weeks ahead of themselves!

Why has Railway Modeller got out of sync with the calendar? It's not even half way through January and here we are discussing the February magazine.

The January issue contained Christmas greetings for goodness sake.

Railway Modeller traditionally used to come out around the 22nd of the preceding month, I guess partly to give a little leeway if there were any delays with production, and partly because the printers need to stagger their print runs - if every magazine in the country came out on 1st of the month, there wouldn't be sufficient capacity to print them all at once!

However the January issue traditionally came out a little earlier, partly I suspect because of different printers' schedules around Christmas, but also to preview the Manchester show which was usually the weekend before Christmas and in the days before Warley, Doncaster, Peterborough etc was one of the big three model shows (the other two being the MRC show and the York show, then both at Easter).

Later the release date was changed to third Thursday of the month, as publication dates on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays caused logistical differences.

Later still, when Model Rail, BRM and Hornby Magazine arrived on the scene, there started to be an 'arms race' to get the latest news out first (e.g. Hornby's latest announcements) so publication dates crept forwards.

I think now there is a gentleman's agreement between the model railway magazines that they all come out on the same date.

Railway Modeller and Hornby Mag - second Thursday of the preceding month. There are five Thursdays in January this year, hence it's 'early' appearance.

Model Rail - 13 times per year (so nominally 4 weekly).

Model Ralway Journal - 8 times per year (ish).

Dunno about the others.
